Odd News of the Day: BeautifulPeople.com
The first time I heard about the dating website BeautifulPeople.com, I immediately thought it to be odd. It's a dating website based primarily on looks and appearance. I thought: "Wow, that's sending out the wrong message. But different strokes for different folks, I guess." The websites homepage states:- Do looks matter to you, when it comes to selecting a partner?
- Do you want to guarantee your dates will always be beautiful?
- No more filtering through unattractive people on mainstream sites
- Meet beautiful people locally and from around the world - now
- Attend exclusive events and private parties
Why you ask?
According to BeautifulPeople.com, ''vigilant members'' called for drastic action after users posted photos of themselves celebrating Christmas and the New Year - revealing they had ''let themselves go''. Robert Hintze, the founder, was quoted as saying:''Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded.''
Yes, so-called "fatties" and "ugly people" were kicked off the site for gaining a few extra pounds during the holiday season. I mean c'mon. Who doesn't put on a little extra warmth after indulging in decadent Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners? Not to mention the irresistible desserts.
While BeautifulPeople.com are saying they are simply maintaining the high standard of beauty on their site, I think they is something fundamentally wrong with this.
What do you think of this dating website based on looks alone?

Wow.. shallow much? It's just a few pounds.. these people need to relax.
Well, it's shallow, but it kinda makes sense.
That's funny.
So you expect a site like THAT to NOT kick people off?
Its sad but you have just fueled their fire and made them more popular just in saying anything. This trash and social degradation is what some people can never climb out from under without a site like this as a reminder (BeautifulPeople.com, that is). Its a slap in the face for those who consider themselves below average in looks.
lol, epic win.
I actually lost a few pounds during this holiday season.
I think this site has all the people who deserve each other on it. they can take turns looking in the mirror at themselves. How pathetic. I would never want to be a part of something like that, I would rather be alone forever.
Lol. I've heard about this site.
Meh. it's stupid.
or maybe I'm just saying that because I know I wouldn't be allowed on it? ;) ahaha.
Wow. This is so shallow!
A site like this is not surprising considering how today's world is so diligently focused on exterior beauty. It's sad but true. However, that doesn't make it acceptable. Who even has the right to be the judge of beauty in this world since there are various forms of it? Why must people be so shallow and ignorant to insist that beauty only comes in one form with a person (i.e. being thin/muscular, tall, fashionable, etc.). Plus, I'm sure 99% of us gain a little weight over the holidays. How does simply being human instantly make us "fatties"? I laughed at that statement by the founder. This website is a complete joke. Anyone with half a brain knows that to base love or worth solely on physical appearance is a losing battle. Beauty encompasses both the interior and exterior of a person or object. I've known physically attractive people with very ugly personalities. People using this site and taking it seriously will probably never find their true soul mate.
Lol it's kinda what they deserved. If they want their dates to be all hot and sexy they need to be hot and sexy themselves. Maybe they'll see that looks aren't everything, seeing as they are the same person just a few pounds heavier, or maybe some will get so upset they'll starve themselves... either way I think it's a type of poetic justice :)
Their definition is obviously skewed. A lot of the people who I think are beautiful are not, in fact, models.
Well, it does make it easier for a lot of people. It's not like people go on dating sites to find ugly people to date.
Kicking people off is pretty lols though.
lmao thats a good one...
Sure to nurture lots of meaningful, long-lasting relationships....
100% honesty here playing devil's advocate.
At first when I read this, I thought "Wow, I cannot believe someone made a website strictly for dating gorgeous people". But then as I was reading on and thinking on, it kind of struck me.
Yes, this site IS shallow and it's another attempt at "Hey, come join our secret club, it's super-duper nifty!". But you have to look at from another angle too.
It is still a dating site which means people on there are trying to legitimately find dates. Now, can ANYONE here tell me that they would fall madly in love with someone that they don't find physically attractive at all? No? Of course not, it's called human nature. So, these people have a higher standard applied to their potential dates physical traits. I say "So what?". If that's something they have put forth as important, than so be it. Frankly, I see this as a site for anyone who put down on any other dating site that they're looking for someone who is "Physically fit/active/athletic/etc". In other words, someone who likes to maintain a physically attractive look.
I find this analogous to the job hunting site "theladders.com" which is ONLY for those in the upper tier of business, those who make $100k and over. Now, who's to judge that some middle-rung cubicle dweller in accounting doesn't have what it takes to become CEO of a company? Well, no one really, but logic and experience tells anyone that there's a SLIM chance he could manage the business as he is. This is the same as the dating site. It's not IMPOSSIBLE that a gorgeous person wouldn't want to date someone drastically less attractive than them, but again, human nature dictates that we tend to want to date those in our league.
Is this site wrong? Depends on your definition of wrong. If this is wrong than every time you turn someone down because of how they looked, you are wrong too. This site is simply doing what humans do every day, but doing it on a larger scale.
Thats horrible, but I guess if people are intrested in being part of something like that then someone should make money off of it. But it makes me want to throw up and then eat icecream and roll in the mud
@mcmeister89@mancouch - I read yours after I posted, I think the point trying to be made is that its a shalow way to look at gorgeous. It's not that something like this is wronge its that the idea that you have to look like a barbie hollywood type to be attractive, it's sad that people can be that shallow, or well that's how I took the blog anyway
The guy in the middle looks like so cut, he's like a bar of chocolate. That I ate at midnight last night. LOL no hope of me getting on this site, then eh? ahaha ridiculous...
hahahhaa... there are niches for everything on the Internet. I wouldn't want to run this site though, too hard to keep up and you step on too many people's feelings with a "cleaning up" move like this.
wow erms... that's kinda sad actually....
LOL. Shallowww.
shallow, but makes the monieeeees.
@coralcwayla@xanga - No where does it say you have to look like a barbie/ken doll hollywood type. From what I can tell, it's mostly gauged on things from the neck down with everything above there being a big plus. You could more accurately say that they look more for the fitness fanatic. Also, you have to realize that a lot more these days, what's being considered beautiful by the media/masses is changing. Not necessarily removing the barbie image, but adding other... I guess you could call them genres, to the list. Perhaps one of the only things that still exists from the barbie age is the body type. Although, even that has shifted. It's moved further from the anorexic/coke head thin type to a more toned/healthy looking body.
I don't disagree that they probably have some sort of basic model in mind for their site, but I bet it isn't strictly limited to the tall, leggy, skinny, big-eyed blondes. I bet you there's some more curvaceous, exotic, dark-haired vixens on there, as well as some hipster goofy looking gals.
