  • Cute, Pretty, Hot, Sexy or Beautiful?

It's interesting to note how words we used to describe people's physical appearances have changed over time and space.  For instance, in Victorian times (and much later that for the matter), it was unheard of to use the word "hot" to describe an attractive male or female.  This word (which is now so overused) has only recently entered the English lexicon.  But what does "hot" actually mean?  And does it mean the same thing for males and females? Hmmm - I wonder.

This also got me thinking about the variety of words we tend to use to describe people, especially when it comes to their appearance.  So as I was searching the web this morning, I came across this question:

    What's the difference between:

    a) cute

    b) pretty

    c) sexy

    d) beautiful

    e) hot

I don't want to go into usual debate concerning inner and outer beauty.  Instead I would solely like to base my questions on appearances.  So...

For guys:  what do you mean when you describe a girl as being cute, pretty, sexy, beautiful or hot?  And which 'type' of woman do you prefer to date?

For girls: what you think guys really mean when they use any of the above to describe a girl?  Given those choices only, how do you want to be described?

    Now for today's song post.

Whether we agree or not or believe this to be unfair and/or discriminatory, numerous studies have shown that attractive people have certain advantages over others.  Good looking people are perceived to be "good" and assumed to be more extroverted, popular and happier than less attractive people.  They tend to get better jobs, earn more promotions and income, have more choices in marriage partners and so forth than others.  Sadly, That's The Way It Is.   Here is a great Rap/hip hop song by Run D. M. C.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsBfPhtSWl8

Have a great start to the New Year

Cute: When I hear "cute," thinking about physical appearance, I think of a little girl (little as in toddler).

Pretty: This is "cute" for grown-ups. Not completely sexy or beautiful, but not average. It's above average.

GIRL: Do you think I'm attractive?
    BOY: Yeah.. you're pretty.. (whatever).

Sexy: sexually attractive. Maybe you wouldn't race out to go show her to your parents, but you'd love to have her around.

Beautiful: She is beautiful. She is the most attractive she can be. She is at the highest level of beauty. She is beautifull

Hot: Like sexy, but to a lesser degree.

    a) cute

    b) pretty

    c) sexy

    d) beautiful

    e) hot

all of these are varying degrees of attractiveness...hot being the highest!

Wasn't there a post on this already a while back?

For me? It's all context. They all mean physically attractive, but have different age associations, or relationship associations, depending on the situation.

"Cute" - Associated with the 17-22 age range. "Youthful"  Wouldn't consider for a serious relationship.

"Pretty" -  The phrase chosen when you favor the person romantically. Would take the time to get to know them better.

"Sexy" - Associated with a high level of physical attraction; prime physical beauty. 25-20 yr. old age range.

"Beautiful" - Associated with a romantic viewpoint/only to be used when referencing the complete package of the individual. (Mind, Body, Soul)

"Hot" - Associated with immense physical attraction. Usually considered for a 'trophy' gain.

Cute and pretty, in my opinion, are terms a guy uses when he's just not really into a girl, or maybe when he's describing a female friend. Cute and pretty don't seem like terms a guy would use when describing a girl he is interested in dating. Sexy is more like a term a guy would use to descrbe someone he wants to sleep with, for example, a Victoria's Secret model, or maybe girl in a club. Hot goes into this category as well. In my opinion, when a guy calls a girl beautiful, he's speaking of a girl he's dating, interested in dating, or has a lot of respect for. Of course, he could be bullshitting just to get in a girl's pants, but in my experience, guys who call a girl beautiful, really mean it and are saying that the girl is more than just physically attractive. Now, I may be way off base, but that is just my take on it.

Now, I've been called all five terms by several different people. Personally, I prefer to be called beautiful. I think every girl would agree on that.

To me, it breaks down like this:

Sexy/hot - used primarily in regards to physical and sexual appeal.

cute/pretty - used to describe a girl who looks good, but not in a revealing or skimpy sort of way. It's also a term which is inclusive of personality traits; it's not a term which refers to physical aspects only like sexy/hot is.

Beautiful - signifies some sort of emotion. Either I have emotion for the person I'm using it to describe, or I wish to convey emotion to another person through it's usage.

  • fugita@xanga

    a) cute - I use this to describe someones actions not their look

    b) pretty - Physically attractive

    c) sexy - Sexually attractive but not just physically also personality and person

    d) beautiful - Not just physically attractive but also has a beauty that comes from within

    e) hot - Sexually attractive but more of just physically only

In degrees I would guess Cute can be added to the top or bottom of either.

    Pretty is lower then Beautiful

Hot is lower then Sexy and

Beautiful is best of all.  *but she can be cute, sexy and beautiful* which = my girl! lol

  • Stellarshore@xanga

@sexliesandcoffee@xanga - Based on how you define the terms, I'd love to be called beautiful.

I always get "cute" and "hot"....

  • Thatslifekid@xanga

I think these words depend a lot on your figure, and how you dress it. I get "cute" a lot.

  • yeahitslindsay@xanga

    Through my eyes..

Cute/Pretty - are used to describe someone who looks good and nice looking, For describing girls: a girl that's attractive, for describing boys: a guy who has a babyface, cute but maybe not dateable.

Sexy/Hot - are used when someone is physically attracted to someone, sexy just someone who wears things more revealing.

Beautiful - is used to say someone's mind, body, and soul is beautiful. Not just one's physical appearance.

I never really thought of this so it's hard to put it into words.. but everyones' definitions seem to be very close with each other.

  • sexliesandcoffee@xanga

@Stellarshore@xanga - So do I. Sadly, most guys, that I've met at least, don't really use the term beautiful.

  • lewk@xanga

cute makes you smile. usually it's actions that are cute.

    pretty means ascetically pleasing.
sexy makes you think of sex.
beautiful is basically where I want someone to be. It's an attractiveness that transcends physical boundaries. I can't love someone for any of the other qualities, but I can love for beauty.
Hot, i suppose, is a lot like sexy, but in my opinion, more fun.
  • HollowTendencies@xanga

I am so backwards with this. I use cute to describe my boyfriend a lot. And I am so much more attracted to "cute" guys than I am "hot" guys. I've never been called pretty or cute, even though I'd like to be. It's always been "hot" from strangers and "sexy" or "beautiful" from my boyfriend. I guess after hearing it a lot, it kind of leaves me jaded, so I just want something different.

  • CARLYpev@xanga

when somebody says i'm or somebody else is hot, i think it's a compliment...but it doesn't mean anything to me.  hot, pretty, sexy, beautiful just words.  beautiful and pretty can be used in emotional or physical instances, and sexy and hot are for the physical and sexual aspects of a relationship.

when i like someonei will probably tell them i find them attractive.  it incorporates everything, emotional and physical.

  • goodbye__dinah@xanga

    a) cute he only likes me as a friend

    b) pretty he likes me as a friend, but wants to do me

    c) sexy he wants to do me, but he also respects me somewhat

    d) beautiful he's into me as more than a friend

    e) hot he ONLY wants to do me

    Basically.

  • Utoppia

    a) cute - someone who's not pretty but really adorable. Someone you want to pinch their cheeks. Mostly relates to younger people or people with a youthful attitude with doll/anime like features.

    b) pretty - Someone who has an attractive face

    c) sexy - Someone that oozes sex appeal; normally inducing wetness from girls or a hard-on for guys...

    d) beautiful - Someone with more than an attractive face; usually considered beautiful when combined with an attractive personality or when love is involved

    e) hot - Someone with a combination of a pretty Face and sexy Body; usually associated with celebrity status when it's their job to be hot. Rare amongst regular civilians.

Cute- You want to hug and look at all of the time. You want to see her smile a lot.

Pretty- A more adult version of cute, I'd say.

Hot- Very sexy. Makes you want to have a one-night stand.

    Beautiful- A combination of everything.

I would rather be with someone who is beautiful.

    Now it's over

  • SacredWriter@xanga

    a) cute- like a little sister (sometimes)

    b) pretty- potential girlfriend

    c) sexy- a girl you most likely only want to bed

    d) beautiful- most guys never call a girl beautiful unless they know you very well so if they use this word most likely they like you a lot or are in love with you.

    e) hot- again most likely want to bed

I would like to be seen as beautiful the most because thats the one word that usually isnt solely based on your appearance and its respectful and always brings a smile to my face.

Most likely I am wrong on the above because getting into a guys brain is hard lol my BF calls me all the above depending on situation. He uses cute the most so the word isnt always for like a sister that depends on the guy I think.

  • imperfect_still@xanga

    a) Cute is what I currently call myself. I think it means having a childish look, not really toned, not really fat, but a little of both. Young and innocent kinda come with it I think.

    b) Pretty to me is like, a brunette, thin, fair skinned and looks very fair. A person who takes care of themselves and maybe wears sweaters and looks well put together.

    c) Sexy - blonde, a little on the skanky side but not always in a bad way. Large boobs, thin, probably showing stomach or wearing something on the tight side that still looks amazing.

    d) Beautiful is the same as pretty to me, but just much stronger.

    e) Hot is sexy, but stronger lol

And I hate when people try to say that people aren't treated differently based on their looks. I was never given a second look when I was heavier and treated completely differently, and though I'm very confident now and have lost a lot of weight, the girls who look better than me still get treated a lot different than I do... It's just how it is :P

  • supaflychikn@xanga

in both guys and girls, i prefer a cute face to a "hot" face. think, hayden panatierre over megan fox. i dunno, something about the eyes maybe. i'm usually called cute and i like it that way; like a couple people have said i think cute includes looks and personality, whereas hot is just about your looks. what can i say, if somebody likes me, they're gonna have plenty of reasons :)  haha.

most woman would rather be called beautiful over any other term anyday.

  • Rambleongirl@xanga

What MAY be going through a MANS mind...

    a) cute: I see her like my I would a little sister. A little, slightly annoying, bubblegum chewing, M&M throwing, blames me for everything, wouldn't touch her with a stick...sister.

    b) pretty: She was hot...maybe back in the day. Now, she's just...well... a little busted.

    c) sexy: I'd hit that....if it wasn't married to my friend.

    d) beautiful: I might be falling for her.

    e) hot: I'd hit that, again..and again..and oh again..and ....
