"You Belong with Me" Belongs in the Trash
I could write a nice little introduction to my rant, but I'm not going to. I'll just start off with: I really effing hate Taylor Swift's song "You Belong with Me."
Now, I like most of her music, although the messages get repetitive and her voice grates on my ears after one too many songs, but this is one that I cannot stand.
My hate-affair with this song started shortly after it first came out. At first it was just like any other song, and then I heard a girl talking about how it was "her" song because it described exactly how she felt about a guy. While listening (and pretending to study my abnormal psychology textbook), I heard enough to piece together that she was talking about my boyfriend being the guy who has "a smile that could light up this whole town"and that would make me the selfish, self-absorbed girlfriend in heels and skirts that just "brought him down".
Now, I love my skirts and shoes, but hearing (okay, eavesdropping) that this girl felt that she would be better for my boyfriend than I am, was enough to make me toss my book in my bag, stand up, turn towards and say "pick a new song, skank."
I later told my boyfriend about said girl, and he mentioned something along the lines of her looking and acting like a giraffe with buck teeth, which certainly placated me.
Has anyone else ever heard a "love song" that they felt was based on an unfair point of view? Or even a song whose message makes you want to break things?

i work at a preschool and i have a 4 year old that sings that song all day every frickin' day! it drove me insane! can you believe a 4 year old knows the chorus?! omg nothing against taylor swift but i really can't stand her voice after awhile either!
Many Lady Gaga songs make me want to break things. But that's besides the point.
I think the biggest issue I have with "You Belong With Me" is that it's basically the same as Saving Jane's "Girl Next Door." Both songs were extremely overplayed to a point where they went from cute straight to making you want to bash your head against the wall. Taylor has way better songs that deserve to be on the radio more than this one.
LOL you sound so damn immature. "my boyfriend criticized her physical appearance and it pacified my (unjustified) tantrum about some girl's song preferences." so what if a girl (or guy) can identify herself with a song? it's what taylor swift intended, i'm sure. not to encourage home-wrecking, but to be able to connect on common ground with people. i feel like most songs in general are to express sentiments and hope that listeners share the same feelings.
dude all love songs are "unfair"; love transcends reason and shit. it depends whether you're the victim or the instigator.
"You Belong With Me" irritates me not only because Taylor Swift sings it (seriously, she's practically my age and she acts like a 12 year old; DNW), but also I get this vibe that the supposed "protagonist" of the song deserves to be with the guy simply for being his friend. So, people are entitled to romantic relationships with others just because they have to deal with typical friendship protocol? Uh, no. Then again, most songs of a similar vein carry the same message so I shouldn't single out just the one.
@sarahzthoughts@xanga - Agreed on the Lady Gaga bit. My life was a hell of a lot better before I found out she existed. The worst part is that I can't seem to avoid her songs. :(
oh god I never thought of it that way. that actually made me a little happy and I have more reason to not like Taylor Swift :)
Wait for You- Elliot Yamin..
Ugh.
I still think she's hot as fuck. I've always played her songs/appearance on SNL on mute because her singing and song witting are AWFUL.
This song, and Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" irritate me for the same reasons. Good grief! How about letting the people in the relationship decide who's right for themselves? If he's with her and not you, he must have his reasons.
No way. I love this song. I love Taylor Swift. She is cute as hell. How can you dislike her after the video?! Come on...
However, I guess if I was in the same situation as you were, the song would annoy me for that reason alone. Shrugs.
is this Datingish? :\
about 5 yrs ago, there was another song similar to it [I can't think of who sung it or it's name] and it sucked as much.
I'm tired of girls who won't wear high heels or skirts complaining when the guy that they like [and doesnt return the feelings] dates a girl who puts effort into her appearance. maybe the chick is a slut, maybe she isn't.
the unrequited love thing really annoys me. you love him, he doesnt love you, move on.
THIS IS SO TRUE IT'S UNBELIEVABLE.
okay, MY boyfriend recently gave into one of these taylor swift-esque situations. she thought she was perfect for him, and he broke up with me to date her!
now i know, i can do better blablabla, but understand this was less than a week ago. i'm just getting over this.
so yeah, i hate this song too !
@xGirLxWiThxAtTiTuDex@xanga - lol! i completely agree.
i dont think "you belong with me" is necessarily a bad song. its not the deepest greatest lyrics ever, but its not a bad song. the only problem i have with it is that i heard it on the radio every 5 mintues for the first few months it was out. and any song you hear over and over and over and over and over and over again is going to start getting on your nerves.
... it's a song. A metaphorical song. Get over it.
i love this song. Go tay tay wooooo
Seems like everyone just picks a side to hate on. I kind of see all of it and how it feeds together and mostly stay on the sidelines for that very reason. I'm not much for hating love songs as it's really about whoever wrote it. They are writing from whatever pain and unfair feeling is inspiring them at that point. I have a favorite love song, but I''m afraid people will use it to bait me so I'll just not air it.
and have you even heard saving jane's song "girl next door?"
taylor swift is totally the dane cook of cheep pop music.
it makes me a little sick that she won so many awards last year.
i just don't like the empty glasses.
haha i hate taylor swift.
@xGirLxWiThxAtTiTuDex@xanga took the words right out of my mouth, but other than what she said, I don't understand why this song offends you. Taylor isn't saying that the girl is wrong for the guy JUST because she wears skirts and high heels; she's saying that the girl takes advantage of her looks and the fact that she can get this guy because of her looks, and treats the guy like a piece of crap because she thinks she can.
the girl singing the song wishes that she would be able to be noticed by the guy too, but she knows that she's considered inferior to the girl with the 'skirts and high heels' because she wears 't-shirts and sneakers'. she also knows that she'd be able to treat him better, but feels like the guy will never know that because he's too caught up with this girl who is so much more physically and socially attractive than her.
you should really listen to the song before criticizing and getting offended by it, because you really had no reason to.
@xGirLxWiThxAtTiTuDex@xanga - Agreed.
The point really isn't that she wears high heels and is a girly girl. It's that she doesn't understand him and seems to nag him a lot, and Taylor feels overlooked because she isn't the typical kind of girl he would go out with.
You people just don't get it. Haha. I think it's cute.
@ivarahBharavi@xanga - EXACTLY.:)
I'll just say it. As a married female, I gotta say GET OVER YOURSELF! I hate that song, I hate whoever blogs about hating it, its a freakin song for petes sakes! Get over it. As for Taylor Swift, shes like what 19 now? She needs to grow up and sing something more mature and less adolescent!
I think it would make sense for you to have a gripe with the girl who was talking about your boyfriend, but not so much for it to be with Taylor Swift for writing a song that the girl happened to identify with.
