Question of the Day
Does sex sell movies?
According to CNN, it doesn't.
Craig Detweiler, director of the Center for Entertainment, Media and Culture at Pepperdine University, said the study's findings reflect the culture's post-sexual revolution sensibilities."Nothing is as shocking anymore," Detweiler said. "You can see it in Britney Spears' kiss with Madonna and Janet Jackson's Super Bowl performance. Things that were a big controversy among some, the next generation kind of yawned at it."
Rather, Detweiler said, he has seen among his students that the new form of rebellion against the older generation includes "not doing drugs, not sleeping around and not getting divorced." That might explain the popularity of some of the Jane Austen films and movies like the "Twilight" series, he said.
"Those stories are really about sexual separation," he said. "They are all about wooing, not winning."
What do you think? Does sex sell movies? Or would you prefer for actors to keep it in their pants?

Of course it does. It doesn't matter whether you'd like to admit it or not, sex sells everything.
It does sell. Have you ever noticed that during trailers for intense action movies, they always ALWAYS have to throw in that 2 second snippit of a sex scene?
And in movies like Transformers... Megan Fox is not there for acting, I promise.Of course it does.
@laurenmaureen@xanga - Absolutely. Transformers is an excellent example :P
yes it does ;p mostly to men
@laurenmaureen@xanga - lol i was listening to the radio this morning and they were saying that she got like worst actress of the year or something.. but also sexiest actress.. hmm..
I have to admit, sex does sell. I mean, duh.
But also, I think love sells just as much. I'm more inclined to watch a movie if there is a love story involved. This doesn't mean they have to have sex. But whatever, I'm a girl, what do I know.
it always sells
It sells for men. all the examples other commenters have given were movies targeted toward the male ages 13-30 population. The examples given in the article were films targeted toward the female 11-30 range.
so, I just proved that filmmakers believe that men only think about sex, while women only think about being wooed.I've heard it said that the Twilight movies are the sexiest movies that aren't about sex. I would have to agree with that! And I think that's what's attractive about it - creating a feeling of desire, but not in-your-face sex or sexuality. If people want to see straight up sex, they'll rent a porno. Movies like Twilight and Pride & Prejudice are about the chase, the excitement, the desire, that everybody had as teenagers, before sex was just a part of life.
everyone knows sex sells. duh.
xo
@iheartemo26@xanga - I agree with that too!
sex sells though not many stand against it.
CNN is full of crap. Sex sells. They point out movies like Twilight, I counter with Jennifer's Body. I've only seen the trailers for it, so all I know is that it's about some hot chick that maybe kills people? She might be a demon of some kind. But she's hot, and doesn't wear much clothing. That part I know.
Sex sells for women too. Far too many women drool over what's-his-face from Twilight. And if you put David Boreanaz, Johnny Depp, or James Marsters in a movie, I'll watch it. =)
sex sells.
I'd see a movie with explicit sex scenes
@JBuggbhs@xanga - two wisest words for this blog!
honestly, i feel REALLY uncomfortable when i watch people have sex on-screen. so it doesn't sell movies for me.
@ItsNona@xanga - hahaha sweeet and simple baby. dass just how i roll.
idk, i wen to see jennifer's body and yea a lot of the audience were men and they wanted 2 see sexy megan fox, but when the girl on girl make out scene happened men and women alike let out an almost deafening groan. No one wanted 2 see that, and i agree with the man, we are rebelling by acting good, well the rebels are
i don't watch movies to see sex. if i want that, i just pay a visit to the porn industry. when i watch a movie i prefer to be intellectually and/or humorously stimulated... which is why i don't watch films like Transformers or Jennifer's Body.
i wouldn't shun away from a movie that had sex in it simply for that fact, but it has little impact on my interest in a film.
Everyone loves sex!!!
yes, what a silly question.
What has gotten more attention - Tiger Woods' marriage, when everything was happy and good with his wife, or Tiger Woods' recent affair? Exactly.
Sex sells.
By sex not selling they apparently mean actors actually having sex, doesn't sell. Sexy actors/actresses, suggestive plots and scantily clad protagonists still sell quite well on the other hand.
