Do You and Your SO Have Opposing Musical Tastes?
Do you and your SO have the same musical tastes? And if not, has that gotten in the way of your relationship and / or 'quality time' together? Why do I ask?
Well my co-blogger and I share similar musical tastes overall. I mean I like a lot of the music he plays and we both like some contemporary music too. Having said that I like 80s music much more than he does since he's more of a 70s music fan than I am. We also have opposing views when it comes to jazz. He absolutely loves this musical genre whereas I don't. Jazz does nothing for me. It doesn't inspire me in the slightest and I told him so when we met.
Somewhere along the line he probably thought that I'd warm up to the idea of listening to jazz once in a while - either at home or while we were out somewhere. Since I'm the kind of person that would try anything once, I didn't say no when he asked me to go to the Malta Jazz Festival last summer. It's not that I was biased from the start but I didn't enjoy it a great deal. While I do appreciate the fact that jazz musicians are talented in their own right, such as Charlie Parker, I can't stand jazz especially when these musicians go into lengthy,k never-ending jamming or 'free jazz' sessions. That kind of music really does my head in big time. Most typical jazz songs, in fact, get me down. So if I had to listen to jazz at all it would be of the much softer version with an easier melody - such as that of Amy Winehouse, Katie Melua and Diana Krall. In fact it was Jan who introduced me to the Melua and Krall and various other musical artists, for the matter. And I really liked them.
So do you and your SO like jazz or any other musical genre more than others or do you have different musical tastes?

Our music taste is very similar, but not exactly alike. We actually started to talk in the first place because of his Neil Young t-shirt :)
Both.
We both listen to death and black metal. It makes things a lot easier when riding in the car. xD
Me and someone I like almost have the same interests. She likes metal, I have eclectic tastes, but the genre we both can agree on is rock music.
My fiance and I have very different musical tastes. I love classic rock and alternative and he's a country fan. We fight over the radio in the car. Usually we try to take turns with listening to each other's preferred genre.
My ex and I had opposing musical tastes. I love a lot of rock and metal whereas she liked hip hop and rap and R&B. I never really liked hip hop and rap because I think it's way too overhyped and mainstreamed to the point where it gets annoying.
My current SO and I have similar tastes. We both enjoy the rock scene, although she's more of a pop punk and alternative person (Mariana's Trench being one of her favorite bands of all-time).
We both hate jazz with a passion. He listens to Moby and Godsmack while my ears are open to Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Switchfoot and such. However, we both enjoy Johnny Cash and other oldies songs.
my bf likes jazz ... i just think i dont get it. it all sounds mostly the same to me...
but, he's into a LOT more music than anyone else i know, (including foreign music, breath singing, warbling, opera, r&B, heavy metal, pop ... basically everything...) so we share a lot of things, too. lol
I thought I liked all types of music. My SO loves these ska bands that I don't like too much though.
My boyfriend loves metal. I love Lady Gaga. It's interesting sometimes. XD
I love metal, classic rock, soul, etc. He pretty much has the same taste except that I love 80's. I love ALL kinds of music.. except jazz...... lol or not all of country..some is ok but for the most part I cannot stand it. I also love underground rap.
My boyfriend and I have somewhat different tastes. I am into alternative rock, indie, and the generally lighter stuff, whereas he is into heavier rock, metal, and death metal.
yes.. he's more into screamo/heavy metal as im more r&b.. soo different but we did find common ground when it comes to soft metal/rock
We both like Rock, but unfortunately, the only genre I can't stand is country and he loves it. And I can listen to secular music all day, but he only listens to the Christian station.
Not really! gladly we both like metal, RnB and Jazz. and bit of alternative rock and grunge ,so no problem there .
YES. He LoVeS Heavy Metal, whereas I like Hip pop and pop and that stuff.
I'd have to be with someone whose taste overlaps with mine. Not completely but somewhat. Our record collections should be able to speak to each other at parties without it being awkward.
I like metal he loves country. I love him anyway. :)
lol it's not SUPER different, but yeah it can totally contrast sometimes. it sort of sucks at times but it's not that big of a deal.
Hmm...he makes fun of my goth rock, and I make fun of his funk music. I think it's good that we can at least make fun without being unduly harsh. I mean...it's music. It's not the only thing that matters to us (but privately, I am SO glad he isn't a country fan!).
I don't have a So.. but I'm interested in a 25 year old who likes 90's rock. The kind that women don't normally listen to. I like some 90's rock, but its not exactly my favorite genre.. I listen to almost everything except "country" country, hardcore heavy metal, and electropop that's super majorly alternative . . I can handle two songs from each genre and enjoy them, but after more than 3 in a day altogether.. it just doesn't do it for me. (:
We both like classical music. He really likes jazz and all that and I'm only starting to get into it. I don't really dislike any genre of music to be honest. It's just particular songs and artists that annoy me. That song, "I Kissed A Girl"? OMFG, I don't like her music... I basically listen to a lot of genres and we're both open so we don't mind anything.
My girlfriend likes some of the bands I listen to like Opeth, but she doesn't like the heavier Death/Black Metal. So when we are in the car I play the "lighter" metal genres. But she prefers industrial metal and other electronica stuff I don't really care for.
I enjoy the classics and classical music, she enjoys mainstream pop music. For the record, it's intolerable.
both of us will are fine with listening to just about anything...but i'm bigger on songs i can sing along to, and i generally tend to listen to mainstream stuff because i hear it more and therefore learn the words and sing along. i'm not a huge fan of metal or anything that screams at me. my boyfriend, however, loves that stuff and the louder it is the better. yeesh. i don't like loud...sensitive ears i suppose.
