  • Hot or Not: Tom and Katie's Marriage Contract

The other day I was reading an article about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in US Weekly (I know, probably not the most reliable source of information but go with me). It talked about how unhappy Katie is with Tom but how she couldn't get out of the relationship because he made her sign a marriage contract. The marriage contract between them isn't proven to be 100% true but it's an interesting concept.

Basically, the contract between Tom and Katie says that she must stay wed to him for 7 years and produce two, Scientology- practicing children. In exchange, Tom will give her unlimited financial support and opportunities to improve her career as a Hollywood mega-star.

Why would the couple agree to such a contract? For Tom, it is somewhat of a white marriage [marriage without sexual relations] in my opinion. I'm not going to come out and say he's gay and really I don't care. But why is he so concerned about not being able to stay in a relationship that he has to form a contract just to keep his wife from leaving him? The magazine also said that Tom formed the same type of marriage contract with ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, except for it lasted 10 years, as the couple broke up shortly after their 10-year anniversary.

For Katie, just being associated with someone with the celebrity status of Tom Cruise gets her a lot of attention from the media. She's an okay actress, but if it weren't for her relationship with Tom she probably wouldn't have gotten much farther than the rest of the Dawson's Creek kids after the series ended. Money and fame all for the sake of being married to a man she had crushed on since she was a little girl. Not a bad deal. Or is it?

How do you feel about marriage contracts and white marriages? Would you ever sign a marriage contract similar to Tom and Katie's?
