Hot or Not: Tom and Katie's Marriage Contract
The other day I was reading an article about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in US Weekly (I know, probably not the most reliable source of information but go with me). It talked about how unhappy Katie is with Tom but how she couldn't get out of the relationship because he made her sign a marriage contract. The marriage contract between them isn't proven to be 100% true but it's an interesting concept.
Basically, the contract between Tom and Katie says that she must stay wed to him for 7 years and produce two, Scientology- practicing children. In exchange, Tom will give her unlimited financial support and opportunities to improve her career as a Hollywood mega-star.
Why would the couple agree to such a contract? For Tom, it is somewhat of a white marriage [marriage without sexual relations] in my opinion. I'm not going to come out and say he's gay and really I don't care. But why is he so concerned about not being able to stay in a relationship that he has to form a contract just to keep his wife from leaving him? The magazine also said that Tom formed the same type of marriage contract with ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, except for it lasted 10 years, as the couple broke up shortly after their 10-year anniversary.
For Katie, just being associated with someone with the celebrity status of Tom Cruise gets her a lot of attention from the media. She's an okay actress, but if it weren't for her relationship with Tom she probably wouldn't have gotten much farther than the rest of the Dawson's Creek kids after the series ended. Money and fame all for the sake of being married to a man she had crushed on since she was a little girl. Not a bad deal. Or is it?
How do you feel about marriage contracts and white marriages? Would you ever sign a marriage contract similar to Tom and Katie's?

Arranged marriage is more successful than actual marriage, so why not?
hot.
wait, wtf?
You're forgetting his first marriage to Mimi Rogers.
I fail to understand how a marriage contract can be hot or not in the first place...
Nope. It sounds like a fake arrangment that people are forced to be in love with each other in order to acquire some mutual benefits.
I'd never sign a marriage contract like that. That is crazy.
Tom Cruise is a mental fuck up. I hope she "leaves" it soon and takes Suri with her. Ugh. Who does that? A sicko.
Fail.
Marriage in my eyes is supposed to be a symbol of two people who truly love each other and are committed in a relationship for the rest of their lives, so this isnt really a "marriage contract" its more like a business deal.
And really what Kate is doing is ridiculous. Shes basically selling her body and life to Tom who is giving her money and fame in return. But i guess if she feels that money and fame are more important than happiness, then whatever. Thats her deal. But its nothing I'm interested in.
umm... that's fucked up.
just sayinn...
scientology does that shit tho, dude... check out lisa marie presley and MJ ... you think that wasnt arranged?
Yeah I heard about that a while ago with the whole Nicole Kidman thing...but it did say it was a contract for 10 years so people wouldn't think he was gay. Who knows if it's true, it may be, it may not be...but that's kinda lame to sign a contract to be married to someone for a certain amount of years.
I'm not even sure that such a contract would be legally enforceable. In any case, I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens after they've been married for seven years. Also, you'll have to remember that Suri was born before they were married.
I'd sign that contract too if those were the benefits! ;D
@schallerbrandon@xanga - That's because in an arranged marriage you have no choice. Often times, the two would be lovers have never met. I bet a good bit of them hate each other, but can't divorce.
Isn't the wedding vows enough of contract? This just proves that no one takes the vows serious to begin with. I think it is sad that gays cannot marry because it is morally wrong and yet what does a marriage contract say.
not at all. if someone asks me to sign a prenup or contract before marriage, i would never even marry that person at all.
Yeah, I thought the weddings vows would be the contract...
erms no not at all. the vows is suppose to be "till death do us part" so whats the need of the contract?
Yeah, my marriage is not gonna have a damn time limit on it. Or minimum, whatever. That's not happening. I'm not gonna marry someone who will only love me until the contract is up.
wow tom cruise is freakin nuts, and yup katie is stupid for agreeing to it, she deserves what she gets, she saw Tom cruise the famous star, every1 thought was sooo great, and flattered that he liked her, went with him. Nicole and him broke up, shouldnt katie learn from his past relationships, hes not the brightest crayon in the box, hes nuts and now now she'll learn,
Poor Katie Holmes. And poor Suri! Daughter of a psycho.
holy shit, marriage contract? but they have a kid! the kid loses either way so damn..
that's pathetic. katie is a dumb girl with no talent, personality, strength or prospect.
To me, the fact that Tom NEEDED to do this in the first place, and that Nicole ditched him the moment it was up and Katie seems to want out already, speaks volumes. If he was a decent husband, rather than a controlling crackpot, maybe a woman would WANT to stay with him.
@EuropeBrazil@lovelyish - Yeah, I feel sorry for poor Suri too. Imagine growing up in that family. Ditto Shiloh, one of Angelina's accessory babies. A magazine here recently had an article about how she "just wants Mummy to love me". The poor, poor kid is like 3 and has already cottoned on to the fact that she's like one of Paris Hilton's handbag dogs.
