Just a quick question: Since when did "Cute" = "Dumb"?
My friend "C" has been dating this girl whom he describes as cute in a nutshell.
She's so cute,...she laughs at my stupid jokes.
She's so cute,...she trips over herself.
She's so cute,...she eats with a spoon.
You get my drift.
Apparently, she got upset and offended because she seems to think whenever he calls her cute (which is a lot) he's really calling her dumb. Now, I don't know if she is because I don't know her well enough on a personal level. But just hearing from my friend, she sounds more like a klutz (like Jessica Alba in "Good Luck Chuck"). He can't understand why she would be this upset. Obviously he's totally sappy right now because she can burp and fart, and he would still think it's cute.
So how do you explain to someone that you find them cute as in endearing and not cute as in dumb? My friend is a bumbling idiot right now and thinks he's just putting the foot further in his mouth if he tries to explain himself. Is being called cute no longer a compliment?

...I wasn't aware cute = dumb. Damn, here all this time I was being called an idiot.
I'm still pretty sure it's a compliment. You could use it sarcastically of course, or demeaningly, but that's all to do with tone, not the word itself.
I think it depends on the way the person says it. ? You can usually tell if someone means it as a compliment or as in they are dumb.
I personally think it can still be a compliment. It's all about the tone, ha. I think of it as endearing, but that's probably cause I get called cute all the time lol
i do all those things, and my bf calls me cute, and it always makes me happy.
you're telling me i've been duped for a year and a half??
Cute is always endearing for me.
i wasn't aware that cute = dumb either. i thought this post was going to be about how pretty people are dumb or something. i think cute is endearing, but almost anything can be endearing if you say it the right way, haha.
being called cute is definitely endearing to me, because I get called it all the time. it seems like your friend just finds the little things about her cute, and that's even when she makes mistakes and what not. of course he really likes her, so why would he call her dumb? she's just being self-conscious.
Hey, if a man doesn't think less of you for tripping over your own two feet (which to other people, she would be heavily ridiculed for), he is worth acknowledging.
From this blog, it sounds like a man is getting over what plenty of women are accused of panicking over in front of guys. So, no matter what she does, he still accepts her and likes her.
I hate being called cute, used to always = not datable heh. But I understand the girls feelings, if he keeps saying things that would normally make people think "wow she's dumb" are cute then she would start to think maybe he's just making fun of her. He might want to try and explain, but if she doesn't want to hear it just stop saying it heh.
@MissPixieGlitter@xanga - True, I used to use slut in an endearing way heh.
It probably depends on how much you like that person. When someone you like does dumb things, it looks cute, even if, in reality, it really isn't. When someone you don't like/find annoying/hate does something dumb, you find it stupid beyond words.
If she's being called cute for doing something stupid, then she's dumb.
It depends. If it's the ONLY thing he ever calls her, it can start feeling like he's looking down on her. After all, what do you usually describe as cute? Puppies. Babies. Small children.
Speaking for myself, "cute" makes me think "childishly endearing" --so it's flattering sometimes, when I'm feeling particularly playful/girlish. But it can be remarkably deflating when you attempt to channel "sexy" and instead get called "cute". So perhaps the problem is just that he overuses it or she hears it too much and has become a little sensitive about it, especially if she never gets called "beautiful" or "sexy"--adjectives more often used to describe women as opposed to little girls.
Dumb is when you think someone who obviously likes you and calls you cute is really calling you dumb.
how can she get dumb from cute? that's just dumb... =)
lol. shes just being dramatic and overthinking it..
It's the little things that she does, even the little and stupid things that he calls cute...so what? And also...if she doesn't like it then she shouldn't act like a dumb blond, she should just be happy that he's not making fun of her.
Well, if being called cute was the only compliment someone can give you, it'd be disappointing.
Preferably, I'd rather be told something more meaningful.. like .. "You're patient." "You're creative." "You've got a beautiful mind."
That's why I like it here on Xanga. You get commented on your thoughts more often than your appearance. Unlike Myspace and Facebook.
Xanga, I love you..
He could use "adorable" or "charming" instead? o.o
@FallenReign@xanga - exactly. After a while you start to realize it's meant to be a nice thing, not a backhanded type of 'compliment'.
She should think of it as a compliment. I mean... everyone's not perfect and somethings that people do are cute, but not dumb. Dumb is different than 'Cute'. I get called 'cute' by my boyfriend and I love being called 'Cute'm but evil at the same time. :P
cute does not mean dumb, u might have met one coincidently cute and dumb, but that does not mean all cuties are dumb.. Never judge a book by it's cover.
You can be cute AND dumb, but being cute doesn't mean everyone who is 'cute' to say, is an idiot.
oi.
I wasn't aware of cute = dumb, but it makes sense because I was always called that, but I'm not even remotely attractive.
Ouch.
@BlehhItsTu@xanga - You're cute.
(See what I did there? LOL)
