I seem to be watching a lot of movies lately... Such an awful student. Anyway!
Last night I watched
Tristan and Isolde, and I cried. (I mean, I cry a lot, about pretty much anything that it's possible to cry about, so it's not some great feat to make me cry. But still, I did.) I think it's pretty much the worst thing in the world to have the person you love most die. Seeing that always breaks my heart. I can't even watch the music video for Avril Lavigne's "
When You're Gone" without bursting into tears.
But for some reason, I always seem to love watching these sorts of romantic tragedies. Much more than I like watching romantic comedies.
Romantic comedies are great, don't get me wrong. My all-time favorite is Shrek, but if we don't include animations, I really enjoy You've Got Mail and Sweet Home Alabama and Four Weddings and a Funeral and also a bunch of actually recent ones that have currently slipped my mind. (Really, I promise, I do keep up with the modern stuff too!)
Like I said, though, I prefer romantic tragedies. I don't even really know why. After all, they
are tragic, and they do make me cry all the time (just off the top of my head, I cried watching The Notebook, A Walk To Remember, P.S. I Love You, Moulin Rouge, Shakespeare In Love, and many more). That's not really a very pleasant experience, of course.
I suppose I like them more because they
do evoke that kind of emotion, though. Romantic comedies make me laugh, of course, but they don't feel as...
inspiring. That's a good word. They don't really make me feel the love as well as romantic tragedies do. Also, I guess romantic tragedies feel more real and relevant to life... Not that everyone's romance ends in death, but just people can't always be together, or there are break-ups, and so on...
Anyway. I'll stop rambling now, so you can tell me what you think too...
Do you like romantic comedies or romantic tragedies more?

I actually prefer romantic comedies because sometimes in romantic comedies, there are tragic endings or good endings. But Throughout the movie, you get to laugh and some of the things that makes a romantic movie great.
my favorite romantic comedy at the moment is probably "Music & Lyrics".
Romantic comedies are fluff. Romantic tragedies are heart wrenching.
If you want sappy, feel good, unrealistic drivel that is the emotional equivalent of cotton candy....choose romantic comedies.
If you actually want to feel your emotional muscles pulse, romantic tragedies are the way to go every time.
imho
I agree. I prefer romantic tragedies over romantic comedies. Patch Adams (though not considered a romantic tragedy) is one of my favorite movies and yet I cry during almost the entire movie.
I'm not a fan of chick flicks in the least, so if I had to watch one I'd go for the comedy.
I like a healthy combination of both comedies and tragedies. My favorites are "You've Got Mail" and "The Painted Veil", respectively.
i saw tristan & isolde eight times in the theatre's. one of my FAVORITES. im pretty sure i cried every time. its just so passionate.
Romantic movies make me cringe... but with good reasons. It feels weird watching a strong hero going all googly eyes and sappy.
I like the comedies better than than the tragedies for the feel good feeling, but I hardly watch romance movies anyway.
tragedies are more emotionally empowering. comedies are light hearted and make you feel happy. so i like both. hahaha.
I prefer romantic tragedies. I actually like the feeling of a gut-wrenching, heart-breaking story that can put me to tears. I think it's because tragedies are more inspiring, like you said, and the story is usually more powerful than romantic comedies.
I prefer tragedies for the already stated reasons.
I like them both. I like to analyze. Ever there is a bad guy... the one we aren't rooting for, though, and I find myself rooting for him.
I love tragic compared to comedy. So much more emotion.
Tristan and Isolde is my favorite movie! Maybe I'm a little biased because James Franco is hot, but it's still a really good movie. So much passion
Romantic comedys are good, but romance tragedies really inspire to find that "one".
@LauraG0929@xanga - I am almost sure that the romantic comedy falls under the heading of chick flick. It may even be at the top.
@Tryingtohealmyself@xanga - Tristan and Isolde is my favorite too ;)
Honestly I like neither. I stick to non-fiction. But, this particular movie resonated with me. The only one that ever made me cry.
I like both. Romatic comedies show the fun side of relationships & tragedies remind us how fleeting live can be & that we should treasure everything we can. Ok that sounded like a movie line but it's so true! LOL.
I LOVE Tristan & Isolde too.
I just can't watch romantic tragedies, I think I get too involved and go into a depressive states for days after until I force myself to stop thinking about it.
I love romantic comedies though!
@Maniacraving@xanga - I know, that's why I said that I'd go for the comedy over the tragedy....though I'm not a fan of either. Chick flicks are irritating all around.
I agree, I prefer romantic tragedies... those are basically the only type of movies I brought with me to school. I adore tristan and isolde and I also cried for all those movies you named. Just seeing the picture of them made me go awwwwwwwwwwwwwww :(
I like them both! I prefer the comedies though, unless I'm post-breakup, in which case, I want to watch as many sad romantic movies as possible >.<
If you want the most epic romantic tragedy every, I suggest "Sad Movie." It's korean and it's basically a cry-happy version of Love Actually (tragedy x 4, literally!). I bawled for a good hour. People thought that someone had died -__-
i like both :]
hard one. i like both. XD
You're not alone...I've been watching a lot of movies too. =( I like anything romantic...from historical, comedy to tragedy.
Funny I just watched Tristan & Isolde 2 Nights ago..One of my all time favorites..But I do agree with you, I'm more of a romantic tragedies person as well, but I do love to laugh so maybe there both even. :)
