Xanga blogger RepressedWriter recently wrote about
pet names and nicknames, which got me thinking about the absurdity of them.
I'm guilty of calling every boy I have a relationship with "baby," and I have no explanation or defense of why. I do
not want children, I'm far too selfish to raise them well or to have my every move determined by a little me, so why I decide to refer to boyfriends with this connotation, I'm not sure. I've been called many of them too: sweetie, honey, babe, and none of them really bother me. (Sweetie does, only because that's my beautiful dog's name.) For the truly un-creative, there's even a
pet name generator if you're really feeling the pressure to be lovey.
Where did this tradition even originate? Now that I think about it, it seems asinine to me to call a significant other the same name as what I put in my tea every evening.
Are there any pet names you absolutely hate? What do you call your partner? Do you have any friends that have sickeningly sweet names for each other?

I call Sean (my husband) Seanipoo! or Seanipookins! Especially in front of his male friends
Id like to call my bf sweetheart but its too long to say. My parents used to write to each other calling one another sweetheart -that was sweet. My bf calls me Virnamin only because his name is Benjamin
I can call my gf Chewbacca because Chu is her last name and bakka means stupid in Japanese(her major). Other than that, a simple honey (여보) does it
She calls me Kevin. Yeah that bird from the Disney animation Up. It's not even my name!
Me and my ex, when we were together, called each other honey.
For others, like girl friends, I call them sweetheart, sweetie, hun, dear . . . .
The only pet names I care for will go as far as honey, sweetie, honeybear, anything that doesn't sound like something your grandma would call you, as she pinches her cheek. Everything else is a no-no for me.
my ex and I used to call each other "babe". at first I thought it was ridiculous, because of Babe the pig or Babe the Big Blue Ox, but now I think it's cute.
I don't like to recycle pet names, so I could never use "babe" for any of my future bfs.
Me and my boyfriend don't really use pet names with each other and I miss them lol. We have been together quite awhile, but we never officially entered that realm with each other.
@ChOcOChObO@xanga - Does she like it?!?!
we call each other "love." i pretty much hate any other pet name. well we stress out our regular names, like i call him E-ric. stead o just regular eric. lol
I make up pet names for him, since I don't like calling him something that other people use. So one of the names I use for him is "loveling".
I don't mind being called baby, but I hate being called babe. I much prefer unique pet names though.
I call my dog sugar, princess, baby, honey.
I call my boyfriend babe, boo, love. =]
If you call every guy, "Baby.." then you will never mix up names! It's an all around WIN. =p
I'll never understand pet names. They give me so much second hand embarrassment whenever I hear them being used, but I guess as long as the couple's happy, my cranky aromantic self should just suck it up...but they sound so silly. >_<
i pretty much hate all pet names haha.
the only one i truly adore is when a guy calls me "love".
otherwise, i just dont like to be called them, or to call someone them.
my ex didn't like it either, so that worked out well :)
@MsKittyCatty@xanga - Nice, haha...I'm sure he loves that.
My hubby and I just call each other, "Boo." :)
@ChOcOChObO@xanga - Awww, that's really cute! =]
I call my boyfriend babycakes, love, or just babe.
@LauraG0929@xanga - He actually told me he loves it when we're alone, he thinks it's adorable. He hates it in front of his friends tho =P haha. I can't call him Boo, I have a gigantic teddy bear named "Boobert" nicknamed "Boo" and I cuddle with him when Sean isn't here... And Sean pretends to beat him up when he comes home. It would only make him more jealous if I called him Boo! haha. =)
@MsKittyCatty@xanga - Haha, nice...
lol that shirt reminds me of this guy that everyone calls him sugar daddy haha
@ForbiddenIllusion@xanga - at first she liked it. two weeks later, she absolutely detests it.
@goblinsinthemirror@xanga - Same here! I thought it was weird hearing other boyfriends call their girlfriends "babe" and when my boyfriend did it, I told him it reminded me of Babe the pig. After awhile, I got used to it.
I don't mind baby, babe, honey, sweetie. There are times when I'll see a name and call him that a few times, but then I'll forget ... like Bumblebee from Transformers ahha
i don't use pet names really. only when i'm joking around.
@ChOcOChObO@xanga - Aw, I guess the magic was short lived lol.
never really liked ppl who use pet names when they talk to their friends. ie: honey
doesn't sound too genuineI call my husband sugar bear and he calls me honey bunny. It is cute, we have used those names since we first started dating. Occasionally we use honey or babe but not as much.
