After reading
this article from the Huffington Post, it seems as if health insurance companies are dropping their coverage of rape victims, simply because of the increased risk of HIV or other sexually-caused medical problems.
The article explained that a rape victim is prescribed anti-HIV drugs (Really? We have those?) if it's unknown whether or not the rapist used a condom. But recently, health insurance companies have been denying victims coverage for these expensive drug treatments. The excuse given for dropping them from their insurance is: "Sorry, you have a pre-existing condition (the possibility of HIV) now that you've been raped, and we can longer cover you." Essentially, the choice for rape victims is: Risk your health insurance or get AIDs. Awesome. As if these victims don't have enough trauma to deal with.
Just a side note: This makes me wonder if these companies have seen the
Saw VI yet. They may think twice after seeing what Jigsaw did to those health insurance employees.
All
Saw jokes aside, what do you think of this new trend? Do you agree with health insurance companies right to deny coverage for rape victims?

oh god, another saw vi viewer that fell into the liberal 'healthcare' trap

That's so heartless of them! A rape victim has already been through intense physical and psychological trauma. If anything, this will just cause more rape victims to remain silent about what happened to them and not get the help that they need, and let the rapist get away with a horrible crime, and possibly do the same thing to other people.
And seriously, the preexisting condition thing is going way too far...
wow thats horrible and stupid!
That's horrible.
...that's really sad. Jeez.
Just another example of how ridiculous things can be when everything revolves around money rather than people.
I read that article & this is one of if not THE biggest piece of bullshit I've heard insurance companies say to people. Someone just suffered through a fucking trauma that will haunt them for years if not the rest of their lives but you cant spend a few dollars on anti-HIV pills they may only have to take for a few months until their check up?
What's the fucking point of paying hundreds of dollars a month for insurance that denies you everything or drops you like a hot stone? They're getting selfish & just plain STUPID. Who are a bunch of ignorant suits to tell us what we dont & dont need if we PAY for it! Did anyone hear about the company that dropped a 4 month old BABY because they said he was "overweight"?!
I'm not normally full of curses but things like this annoy me yet people say they dont want government funded healthcare. It's so easy to say no to something when you can afford it. I dont think the government should completely control it or take away the option of getting insurance from private companies but we're in a bind & people need help. Stories like these should make people open their eyes & HEARTS!!
Wow. That is BEYOND fucked up.
This pisses me off so much...
Can't the rape victims get tested for HIV so everyone knows they don't have it? All it is is a simple blood test...
That's absolute bullshit. I just don't even know what else to say to that. Pray my health insurance company never finds out about me, then.
@Lil_Firefly_25@xanga - I think the issue the OP was pointing out is that until it is certain that the victim has HIV or not, they're left in limbo. The anti-HIV meds could have helped prevent it if they were raped by someone who had it, but those are no longer available, unless it's out of pocket.
This is such depressing news.
America's pretty much just going to keep robbing the poor and giving to the rich until someone nukes us.
they have the right to deny coverage to any individual with pre-existent conditions. like diabetes, stds, people who smoke, etc. there isn't any law prohibiting to do so, and in actuality, if insurance companies took on all of those people, insurance for the rest of us would be naturally higher. so yeah, they have the right.
I hate health insurance companies, they're a big rip off. Unfortunately we need them. And that's why they're the biggest rip off.
Uh... Sure... How about their wives or daughters got raped, how would THEY feel about it? Bullshit. This is not even about rights, it's about common sense.
ethically it's ridiculous but in a business sense they're trying to save their own asses. i think its wrong personally.
Standardized health care would be nice. I don't get why we still haven't gotten that passed yet heh. Insurance companies are weird, if you get a certain disease but are later cured they'll drop you from their insurance as well. If you get cancer you have to later be cancer free for 5 years I believe before any insurance company will cover you again. But if you get sick during that time and have no insurance you could just wind up dead. Makes no sense to me. This rape - HIV thing seems about the same except worse in some way, both cases you can't help what happened to your body, but with the rape/HIV thing you don't even know if you have it or not and they won't insure you.
it's a business not a charity
This isn't odd news. This is "so horrible you lose your faith in humanity" news. Apparently, breathing is a pre-existing condition. >_<
@Lil_Firefly_25@xanga - HIV test - no. There's a 6 month window before it could even show up.
As for the rest of this? Welcome to America.
Maybe the people that came up with this policy should be raped just to see how it feels to be completely helpless. It was NOT a victims choice to get raped and be subjected to HIV. That is such bullshit.
@XoAsianBabioX@xanga - That is exactly why they don't have the right.
Nobody has the right to let innocent people suffer because it's easy.
God, now I'm even more afraid of what my poor angel is going through.
Um, wow... I mean, a rape victim isn't more likely to get AIDs than someone who just sleeps around indiscriminately (and there's no police report or anything for insurance companies to harp on with that one), and it wasn't even their fault. I feel like they'll probably get sued for that sometime down the road, and it'll serve them right.
