I always got a lot of crap for being such a "boy" at school because I really hated to put on make-up everyday like all the popular girls did. I really hated wearing tight-fitting clothes that would show off my curves because I couldn't really move freely in it, and most of all instead of cheer leading and being in the fashion club, I was the girl in the anime club, martial arts club, and soccer club. Yea a lot of my friends back then were guys who give me loads of bull for being in clubs only meant for men, I mean please soccer, anime, and martial arts aren't only for men, high school immaturity best days of my life (yea right).
Anyways the title is actually a joke that my fiancee always tells me, it's a personal joke we share, you see he's a Taekwondo black belt and me I'm a Muay Thai Boxer. We both were friends high school before we started dating, but back in high school I remember all the time when he'd try to literally "sweep" me off my feet and I'd come back and Teh Tud (means roundhouse kick in English) his ass for trying to sweep me. But anyways, a couple days ago I was talking to him on skype, and we started reminiscing about how we were so "loving" to each other in high school.
It was fun to think about those days, but then a question popped up into my head, that I wanted to ask:
Me: "Hey babe, I got a question."
Him: "What is it?"
Me: "What did you think of me when you found out I did Muay Thai? I mean a lot of my guy friends told me I was so unladylike for doing it, what was your feelings towards it?"
Him: "Well I feel a girl needs to protect herself whether it be martial arts or even that lousy pepper spray crap, but I never thought you were unladylike, I found it more attractive that you could probably kick my ass."
Me: "Ahahah you sound like a masochist."
Him: "Bebe when I found out you did Muay Thai, it didn't make me think less of you, in fact I thought more highly of you because you could protect yourself and stand your ground."
So ladies and gentlemen what do you believe, is it ever unladylike for a girl to learn martial arts? Tell me what you think.

Who cares if it's ladylike or not? It's just plain awesome that you can stand up for yourself & kick someone's ass if need be.
naw, it's not unladylike. i do taekwondo -__- it's so fun and such a good workout :P
just stay fiiiiit :/
haha...I wouldn't care, nor would it diminish what I thought of said lady. Character, personality, and their beliefs are far more important. And, if they can kick my ass, kudos to them. ;D
who cares? being able to kick ass is awesome. rock on, girl.
Strangely, I was the girl in school known for liking Anime, doing Karate, and most likely would have joined wrestling if I thought of it before senior year. I had about the same number of guy friends as I did female friends. Um, strangely for me, it was the female friends who told me I was "too intimidating" to guys while my guy friends (the ones that were openly after me) felt that me being able to kick their ass was such a turn on (of course, most of those guys probably wouldn't have stood a chance against girlier girls).
My female friends actually used to make me feel bad and to feel girlier, I would wear skirts (although they would still say I was "intimidating). I still wear skirts all the time (by my own choice) but I now wear shorts under them all the time so I can still be ready to kick anyone's butt. I can't say that doing martial arts really is all that lady-like, but it is necessary and I don't think it can sacrifice who someone is as a person (lady-like on the outside, tigress on the inside!)
well my husband is a martial art instructor and he loves it when I show up in his classes.
No. I agree with your bf. It's a positive thing.
I'm a wrestler and I have a blackbelt in Taekwondo, however I'm 5 feet tall and have an innocent looking face.
Guys are always surprised that I'm strong and it's funny.
But, immaturity in high school makes it hard for me to date people my own age because guys can't stand a girl who can kick thier ass.
I think it is awesome you can protect yourself, and so many girls these days are learning martial arts anyway.
I think it's pretty hot. :D
....... Note to self: Learn Martial arts. I'm 4'11' (152 cm) and weigh oh,...... about 90 lbs (around 40kg)......... hehe..... might need to protect myself :P
I think it's attractive as your SO pointed out, and for the exact same reasons. Strong independent women are hot.
I can see how guys would be afraid of a strong girl. So they teasing is just a way of mentally scaring tough girls.
There is one thing that I find unlady-like: Massive body-building. Sorry, if she looks like the governor of California, that's a turn off. However, a strong arm never hurt anyone... unless of course she punches you.
No, I think that is wonderful that someone can stand up for herself if need be... :]
LOL...I'm in Kendo right now.
never unladylike, just powerful and hot. xD
@steph - Exactly. It's an art, and not restricted by gender at all.
I've been doing full-contact kickboxing for almost three years now, and I've never gotten any comments about it being "un lady-like". It's self defense, and a great way to stay in shape.
It's not unladylike. I lift weights and I learned to do Olympic lifting for strength training for track in high school. I still do them. My absolute max for squats is 300 pounds (over twice my body weight) and now I usually max out at 250 without having an official spotter. Ladylike? According to some, no. But, who cares? If it makes you happy, that's all that matters...
And I can pin my boyfriend who is significantly larger than myself...and he likes it. So, obviously it doesn't matter all that much to some guys...
Hell no. It's pretty hot the more I think about it.
However, not hot if it's used as a threat--some times. lol
You rock. Girls who are physically active are very attractive. Keep kicking butt! :D
That is awesome that you did martial arts, especially muay thai, the bulldozer of all martial arts...in my opinion any girl that can do that specific one rocks, look at how many people like Gina Carano and she started in Muay Thai!
you know, i have the (almost) opposite question...why is it that girls seem to be turned off when they find out guys are into martial arts? i've never had that experience personally (because i usually don't tell people) but i've had friends who missed out on girls because they opened their mouths.
p.s. tae kwon do is totally not a martial art. it's a sport.
Nope. It adds character! =) Have a good day.
Back in middle school, I used to joke that the woman I chose would be even better at martial arts than I was, and that she could kick my ass at it. I said it because I was pretty under the influence of cheesy romantic movies and stuff.
... Still, that actually sounds kinda sexy.
Actually, IMO, girls never look sexier/hotter/more overall attractive than when they're in a karate uniform, then turn their head and give a smile. .... JESUS.
I prefer to just use a sexy gun J/K
Being able to have the skills to defend yourself if you ever need to is a good thing.
I'd love to learn something in martial arts. I think it's awesome girls get out there are do things they're interested in, even if others think they are silly or "unlady like" at the time.
