Recently there's been a trend on Datingish revolving around pick-up lines. Nerdy pick-up lines, compliments confused for pick-up lines and if pick-up lines even work. In the latest post,
lil_KyungMin@xanga said it would be fun to do an experiment to see if pick-up lines actually work. Well,
a new survey has found that women are more likely to fall for a man if he breaks the ice with a cheesy pick up line. The theory being that women appreciate a man with a sense of humor, and corny pick-up lines are a good way to display that.
According to the poll here are the top ten cheesy chat-lines that actually do work:
1. 'Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?'
2. 'I have had a really bad day and it always makes me feel better to see a pretty girl smile. So, would you smile for me?'
3. 'Apart from being beautiful, what do you do for a living?'
4. 'Shall we talk or continue flirting from a distance?'
5. 'I seem to have lost my number, can I have yours instead?'
6. 'Hi, I just wanted to give you the satisfaction of turning me down; go ahead say no.'
7. 'Is it hot in here or is it just you?'
8. 'Do you mind if I stare at you up close instead of from across the room?'
9. 'Did it hurt when you fell out of heaven?'
10. 'There must be something wrong with my eyes, I can't take them off you.'
But wait a minute guys, not all lines are going to be a crowd-pleaser. Here are the top ten lines which DON'T work on women:
1. (Take an ice cube to the bar, smash it) and say, 'Now that I've broken the ice, let's talk.'
2. 'I guess you can kiss heaven goodbye. Because it has got to be a sin to look that good.'
3. 'Were you arrested earlier? It's gotta be illegal to look that good?'
4. 'I've lost that loving feeling, will you help me find it?'
5. 'Do you have a map? Because I keep getting lost in your eyes.'
6. 'Is there a rainbow, because you're the treasure I've been searching for.'
7. .Hello, I'm a thief, and I'm here to steal your heart.'
8. .I hope you know CPR? Because you take my breath away.'
9. 'Is there an airport nearby or is that just my heart taking off?'
10. 'I may look like a frog but if you kiss me I'll turn into a prince.'

none of these are a turn on. group A are just as lame as group B. I like a person who is natural (or at least pretends to be)
I really don't like pick-up lines. They're so forced. I'd rather meet someone naturally.

i think pick-up lines are hilarious. i'm totally one of those girls who'd fall for a guy who opened up conversation with a cheesy pick-up line.
i'm just a dork like that though. i have to say, i would laugh if i guy used number one from group B on me. but it wouldn't actually work unless he was a cool guy anyways.
I was actually laughing, these were so cheesy...I doubt these would work on anyone, however.

only 6 from the do list would work on me, it IS funny and cute.. all the others would make me gag... actually, i think all the others were used on me before so I associate them with the guys that said it and THAT's why I gag...
I think if a guy is cute/hot and charming and has a good personality it doesn't really matter what he says first to get to me.. I'd giggle and blush even if he said "boiled potatoes". Guys who don't have those assets have to work harder.

I wouldn't use any of them. I know women like being complimented though, and they like to be complemented in a way that does not objectify them. But my experience is that even if they like your hit line you will still be rejected if they are already in a relationship. Furthermore, I don't recommend trying to steel them away from whatever relationship they are involved in because if they are the type to abandon someone else for me then that also means there is a chance that they will abandon me for someone else, or even worse, have a fling with someone else and not tell me about it.
I've heard a variation of the ice cube one:
*points behind the person* "Polar bear! Polar bear! Polar bear!" -when the person looks- "It's breaking the ice! Hi, my name is _____."

I like #6 from the "Do" list... because it made me laugh a little. Someone who can come up with something like that would probably get at least a few minutes of my attention.
But of course it's all in the delivery. If you are too nerdy, it's going to be awkward. And if you're too smooth, it's going to seem like you've used that line on way too many girls before.
I've definitely had some stupid ones used on me before. I am definitely the type that likes to be amused, so if you can make me laugh, points for you. 4 and 6 from the A list are kind of funny. And 2 would actually make me smile. But if I'm not attracted to you, I'm not attracted to you. So it's hit or miss, regardless.

LOL...I like #1 and #2 on the "actually works" list just b/c it sounds different from the ones that I've seen on other posts. Perhaps if a guy I already like says it to me, it'll make me giggle, but iono about a stranger. If you have to use a pick-up line, I think you're trying too hard. Sometimes the simple approach (walk up to a girl and chat on friendly terms) might just work better.
Then again, I can't speak for all the girls
