A new policy at Tufts University may make sexiling a thing of the past. Well, probably not, but the school gets an A for effort. According to the
U.S. News & World Report, Tufts recently added an official rule prohibiting students from having sex while their roommates are present. This policy arrived following a number of complaints from disgruntled roomies.
Now, I agree with the spirit of the idea—you should
never have sex with your roommate in the room. I mean, didn't you guys see
Urban Legend? That girl wound up
dead.
But anyway, I like to think we've evolved to the point where we can rely on courtesy over policy, that roommates should be able to respect each other enough to keep it in their pants—or at least kindly escort the third wheel to the study lounge—without intervention from the powers that be. Or, if your roommate won't do it, you should be able to complain to a Resident Advisor or similar even without an official edict to point to. I mean, right?
Is this new policy overkill, or have I just had really good luck with roommates? What are your experiences with roommate sex/sexiling?

Oh goodness. I guess some people don't have the respect for others. If they made it a policy, it's probably because the problem has risen to the point where it's required.
I've been lucky to have my own room in suite-style apartment-dorms since I have been in college, so that has never been a problem =)
People are often rude enough not to respect the boundaries of others. Just read some of the stuff of TFLN or FML. Or ask older siblings who share rooms.
Couples are getting it on, while the person on the other bunk is trying to sleep. It happens all the time.
... lol. Are people really having that hard of a time asking their roommates to leave, or telling their roommates that sex doesn't happen while I'm in the room and not participating?! haha.
@aCe_KeiAnar@xanga - Seriously.... why can't people just be like get OUT of the room, that's disgusting.
i read this a couple days ago! i thought it was so funny. hahaha. it wasn't until then that i realized sexiling was a word other universities besides nyu used. but at the same time, we're college students. it is inappropriate to have sex in front of other people, but if the said culprits feel like they want to do it, they should be allowed as long as it's not illegal. if the roommate has a problem, it should be settled within the room or with a room change. there shouldn't be a policy, that probably can't be well enforced anyway.
:'( o god it's happened to MEEEEEEEE .... the same room ..... seriously.............
As long as it doesn't happen on a regular basis/isn't disturbing your sleep or anything, then just shack it up as part of your college experience. There should be ground rules set before anything like this happens. My college made us write roommate contracts of things that we will and will not allow to happen in the room. Best story with that is in one of the girls dorms, their roommate asked her roommate what she thought about sex in the room. The roommate's reply was "It's okay. It's like free porn."
I try to tell my roommate when I want the room in advance, keep the time limit at MAX 2-3 hours (to allow for cuddling and maybe a nap), and be as considerate as possible.
Er that's a little much. I cuddled with my gf when my roomie was in the room. She didn't go out much so I never wanted to ask her for the room. She watched a lot of tv shows online so I would let her borrow my noise canceling headphones. I don't think she really minded. We never had sex while she was in there though.. Just hugging and a peck. Sex is crossing the line.
They must just fail at common sense..
@XoAsianBabioX@xanga - OMG you go to NYU too? XP
@proudsmartypants@xanga - haha yep! i'm a proud sternie. xD
@XoAsianBabioX@xanga - hehe is it true that you have no soul? :P i'm cas. yay biggest school!
That's hilarious. I would think the people who want to have sex would feel a little bit awkward having someone in the same room while they are getting down and dirty. Unless they are drunk, stoned, or really get off on having people watch them. xD
haha no i think the policy is fine
because if people have the courtesy not to do it with others around, then the rule doesnt really affect them and shouldnt really bother them i spose
Way to prevent sperm in the eye. Kudos
Making it a rule is dumb, making it a suggestion would be smarter.
When I was in school I would always give up the room and hang out in the common/lounge/living room area even if there wasn't any sexing going on. Its just common courtesy to give my homey privacy when his lady is visiting.
...and he'd do the same, but I HAVE woken up to a roomate making out super heavy with some random broad after a party one night. I was too out of it to wake up and curse anyone out or leave.. but when I woke up an hour later or so they were both gone. No harm no foul.
Don't cock block your roommates, man. Thats not cool.
I've walked in on my old roommate heavy petting a few times, and usually I just leave indefinitely...
I only had a roommate for one year though! We had a talk about sex and she basically told me that I could do it as long as she was asleep. She slept like the dead. My boyfriend at the time lived on the same floor as me so we sometimes went to his room. His roommate said sex was ok as long as he was asleep so it worked out pretty well for me. It was weird saying goodnight to him though :/
lol. how the hell would they be able to enforce this? LOL
i love the comment above me! like really? how can they enforce this? And why would your room mate want to be in the same room while you're doing the b00mb00m in the z00mz00m? D:
it's weird. I think we all owe each other a little respect by leaving when necessary =)
Yeah you are right that is how it Should be. But unfortunately there are some crazy, idiotic, inconsiderate people out there. The policy is a good thing, no one should have to go deal with a jerk room mate. I have had a few bad experiences, and I've probably been the "jerk" a few times myself. Living alone is tops!
That's hilarious. Lucky for me my room mate is too innocent for that. If she ever tried that, I think I'd tackle them both.
I'm pretty sure thats a given but some kid probably made it so this rule had to be made. At my school if u get caught having sex, then u get wrote up.
