Would you ever buy condoms at a discount store?
I was at a discount store the other day because I wanted to get some disposable containers for work. I figured, things at discounted prices are usually not the best quality which is why they are so cheap. Since I'm too lazy to wash my tupper-ware, disposable is the way to go. Plus, have you ever tried to clean it after using it to store pasta? That orange color just will not come out!
So anyway, as I get in line to pay for my stuff, I see the man in front of me buying condoms. It was obvious that it was a generic brand because instead of saying "Trojans" on the box, it said something like "Trogans". It was like a knock-off bag. Instead of Gucci's, you would get something that said Cucci's.
I couldn't help but think, "Buddy, you really want to spend an extra dollar or two here to prevent a life time of child support or a one time abortion fee."
Was it shallow of me to think that way? After all, people buy generic stuff all the time. From generic cereals to generic drugs. Is it worth it to skimp on certain things?

No , I believe in absolute insurance. If I found out that my guy used generic condems I would be upset that he didn't care enough to spend the extra money for better protection. Another point is that I don't prefer condoms because there can be so many malfunctions, so I use Birth Control.
I think they test these kinds of things, I used to work in a CVS and was constantly explaining the difference between generics and name brand.
"It's the difference between the jeans in Kohl's vs. the designer jeans in the hollister".
Same thing, different name.
And what I always think about is the price factor. It might be possible he's just chosing the cheapest one because he can't afford it. At least he's TRYING to be safe!
@CreativeBoho@xanga - birth control isn't 100% effective. it's suggested to use both a condom and birth control.Â
Generic stuff can be just as good as the "name brand"....
But when it comes to any kind of birth control, I think I'd want the "name brand" stuff, just something about it makes it seem more comforting/reassuring.
well, buying condoms and cereal are two entirely different things. if it's something related to your health in a very serious way, i would personally feel more reassured if i obtained a brand name.
and *trying* to be safe doesn't come close to doing it right. utoppia, it's not about being shallow but just making the right choices, especially if we're thinking about what the consequences could be, and i completely agree with you on spending a dollar or two on something that purposes a more assured outcome.
I agree with the first commenter. Name brands have more expensive prices because they are simply that: name brands. They spend more money on commercializing and packaging so they have to up the prices of their merchandise.
I like Trogans better than Derrex.
this is tricky. i'm in support of the idea of buying generic products. many times they're just as good, just don't have the fancy name. i prefer coke over rc soda but i think i'd go for a generic brand of condom every now and then.
I wish you would've provided actual data instead of mere speculation with this post.
HAHAH for MOM? that's rich. yeah, i don't know if generics are okay for condoms, but if they are, sexaholics could be saving a lot of money.
btw, a tip for eating pasta in tupperware: put some plastic/saran wrap into the tupperware as a liner before you put in the sauce. then when you finish eating, just lift the saran wrap out of the tupperware and throw away. your tupperware is unstained and all you have to do is rinse it with water.
Unless I know for sure that generic condoms are like generic drugs where it's basically the same (Advil, ibuprofen), I wouldn't chance it.
dont hate on the poor people. at least they are using condoms.
I buy my condoms online from adamandeve, but if a shipment was late, my boyfriend and I always used Trojans. I wouldn't go generic brand with them.
I also don't do generic toilet paper. I always pay extra for brand name!!
generic condoms are just as good as name brand. thats one product that has to be manufactured to a certain specification... or at least thats what I was told when I asked someone about the cheap condoms in bathroom dispensers. in the end i just bought the expensive trojans cuz it gave me more confidence, but i think the trogans would be just as safe to use.
Probably not a good idea. That guy is probably going to post the consequence of buying those on fml.com.
@wizexel22@xanga - that made me laugh out loud literally.
LOL generic condoms
no THANK you :)
x
Some generic items are fine, but condoms aren't one I'm willing to use. I was once in a dollar store and saw condoms and pregnancy tests, I joked that if you bought those condoms you might as well pick up the test too because you'd probably need it soon.
BTW, just a thought, since stores like Wal-mart are "discount" stores if you didn't buy condoms at "discount" stores where would you buy them?
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - agree~
@zxzeebrastar@xanga - I agree with this girl when it comes to condoms. But I always buy my mouthwash and most other things generic because I prefer to keep my money in my wallet rather then in the garbage can of some company ceo smuck. :)

Meh. My birth control pills are generic. They work fine.
@CuriousiTea@xanga - I actualy worked in CVS too. I used to tell everyone there isnt a difference until I actually took chemistry and made my own aspirin in class ( Im a nursing student). Basically, its worth paying for the extra dollar especially if youre putting something inside your body. Some companies could still have salicylic acid acid in their aspirin which is basically poisonous. Salicylic acid is purified to make aspirin and brand companies spend that extra dollar purifing and studying your drugs for safety.
@prettyboy78@xanga - I was referring to extreme discount stores like Jacks or OddJobs
I definitely think that with some things, it's all a mental game. We like the added security of knowing we're using something that is reputable and popular.
I think "better" really depends on the product - maybe for some things name brand is cheaper quality!
Either way, it's all about how happy you are with the product. Those generic no-name condoms probably make that guy happy, and maybe they're tried and true, so he's quite comfortable skimping a few bucks.
