"Never Do It Without Your Fez On"
After hearing my share of tunes that clearly mention sex, I'm surprised I might be the only dude who heard a rap group advocate condoms.
Now, personally, I'm not big on sexual songs. If it is done right and actually brews either sensuality, or makes you actually feel horny, then you know a sexual song is being done right. Yet, as I was listening to one of my favorite groups, Animal Nation, I came to the conclusion of how frightening it is that rappers aren't trying to sing about the importance in packing a jimmy hat.
The saddest part is that some people here (say, a majority) haven't heard of Canadian duo Animal Nation? It's not your fault. I've been advertising them for a while. And one way I can do that is say out of all the rappers I have ever heard, they are probably better role models in sex than the likes of Pitbull and Lil' Wayne.
Animal Nation admit being sexual, but suggest it's best to never do it without your fez on. They let us know they carry one in their pocket everywhere they go, in case something brews.
Over a Steely Dan beat, Steige makes it clear that he's not ready for a kid, because in the heat of the moment, some will forget to pull out with unprotected sex. Steige and Mike also speak for those that aren't financially ready for it either. "I can't even cook for myself twice a day/How am I supposed to send a baby on its way?", He points out. From that line on, and Mike (Mike is the one in the beige hat) claiming "A jimmy is a man's best friend", it's like we found yet another reason why radio truly sucks as a source of learning about the world over.
These guys inspired me to keep on with my collection of 32 types and brands of condoms (and counting).
Have you heard of Animal Nation? Do you know any other musicians that promote safe sex? Do you think music today has a negative influence on sex, dating and relationships?

I don't remember sending this to Datingish. Aw well. At least you helped me with a question on this one. Plus, its been confirmed that there is one done by Lil' Wayne.
Nope never heard of Animal Nation, but will check it out though.
Yeah there are other music artists who promote safe sex. Jamie Foxx and Kanye West have a song called Extravaganza where they reference condom use. The lyrics were "Well tonite, I'm trying to find them other girls,Bring they own rubber girl..." SnoopDogg has a song and the lyrics are a little like- "cause aint no loving good enough to get burnt while I'm up in it" TLC- remember the vid where they had the condom glasses. Both Erick Sermon and Sean Paul have a song entitled "safe sex." Usher has a song called "thats what its made for" and the lyrics go a little something like "we got protection, that's what its made for, boo are you tripping now, you know I got it, thats what its made for." Anvil and Ricky Martin have public evidence of promoting safe sex.
No I don't think music, solely, has a negative influence on relationships, dating, and sex. But I do think it can have a negative influence on our thoughts. A lot of the music is just for fun and should not be taken seriously. But if you hear something repeatedly, some influence may seek in.
Animal Nation? not heard of them
I have in fact heard this song
Never noticed any others promoting safe sex, but I guess they might exist. And 32 types?! Jeez. Too bad there's not much variety in the non-latex ones.
I do think that the music you listen to can influence your behavior. It doesn't always, but it can. I have heard positive sexual education (for lack of a better term) in music before, but a lot of the times it's just derogatory.
My bitch a choosy lover, never fuck without a rubber.
Never in the sheets, like it on top of the covers.
