  • Friday Fun: Were You Friends First?

    Miss Gorilla

Before my boyfriend and I started dating, we were close friends first. For the first four months that we were "talking", we were separated by close to four hundred miles and didn't have the option to really experience anything more. At the time, we hated our situation and couldn't wait to be reunited. Looking back, I think it was probably a blessing in disguise. A long summer of lengthy phone calls and texts allowed us to develop a strong friendship before anything else happened. Because of this, we have a strong relationship that relies on not only love, but also communication and trust.

In the past, I have always jumped right into a relationship and it has never worked out. I really feel that the getting to know each other period allows time to establish your friendship before becoming more. What are your thoughts? Were you and your SO friends first?

Best friends :). For a few years before. We 'dated' for a month and a half when we were thirteen :P.

Nope, not at all. For my longest relationship, he was just some random guy who sat next to me in my lit class. Now we're bitter exes. Great.

We were barely friends when we started dating, but then four months later I left for Argentina and was gone 6 months for study abroad.  It was during that time that our relationship and friendship were really solidified.  Then we got married 3 months after I got back :)

really good friends, but long distance for 5 yrs. I got a job that moved me to AZ, which by chance is where he lived, we ended up really getting along. we've been together 2 years now.

He was one of my best friends for a few months before we dated. The guy I dated before him I hardly knew, but it was on of those things where I was attracted to him but hardly knew him...and it didn't end well. My current bf and I helped each other through a difficult break-up (the girl he dated before me, I think, mostly just wanted him for his looks... >.> ) and after being close friends for a while, he confessed he had feelings towards me...right after I had started feeling the same way. We dated for 2 months, then broke up for 4, and have just celebrated our 1-year anniversary...from 1000 miles apart. :/ He moved away for college, but we're still best friends, in love, and going strong.

All of my boyfriends have always been my friends first, and most have stayed friends. I don't think I'll date someone I don't know in that way. I'm normally too quiet until I trust a person lol.

We hung out, and talked occasionally.. but I wouldn't really call us close friends or anything..

  • soniiuh@xanga

Yeh, my ex was my friend before we dated. I actually prefer being friends first with the guy I'm interested in, even if our friendship was only a month or so old.

  • HollowTendencies@xanga

Friends since 4th grade. Awwwww. :)

We just started dating a month ago though.. I have never been so in love in my entire life.

We were very good friends first.

yeah, we were friends first... super platonic. and this has been and is the most successful of all my relationships/boy-related things.

  • joycemiles@xanga

I was friends, then close friends, then best friends before I started dating my boyfriend

I completely agree.  The same thing happened to my bf and I.  We were friends for one year, did long distance for one year (opposite coasts) and we are still together today.  It makes the relationship more pure, and less reliant on the more superficial relationship aspects.

For six months our friendship developed from strangers, acquaintances, friends, best friends, to lovers. It's been 9 months since we've been official and we're still best friends & each other's first loves.

for 5 years. we went to HS prom together. we started dating a year ago. he's quite wonderful

  • baby_mi_cha@xanga

We were enemies at first, we didn't like each other faces back then, until we actually got to know each other in person and became friends and now we are together for 3 years plus. Think he really understand me more than any other exs i had. Love him!

with my first gf, we were close friends and then began dating, it didnt last long and went back to being friends, my next gf i didnt know well, and it turned into a disaster. my current gf i have known her almost a year now, we were really close friends for about 7 months, we told each other everything, helped with boy/girl issues, and she was visiting me for a few days and it kinda just happened, and we are so happy together..

I would like to think my ex and I were friends first. We talked nearly everyday before we dated and then we talked like ten times more when we were together. My friend use to joked that he and I stayed in contact 24/7 via text, call or aim. Now that we broke up, we aren't friends anymore, nor do we talk at all. Kinda sad ): I miss having him to talk to.

  • Love_Laugh_Write@xanga

My ex and I were good friends for about a year and a half before we were together. When we were friends we talked a lot, but when we were together it was pretty much non-stop. We don't talk anymore, but for a good reason. It's better this way.

I think it's important to be friends first. Having a friendship to start with makes things easier because you already know so much about them, and that will make the relationship stronger I think. Plus the communication is a lot better.

  • Sunny_Worms@xanga

Ithink that's true. A lot of relationships that I have jumped into hardly worked out. With this current SO, we've been friends for about two years and we've been dating for almost 7 months now (a huge difference to the one-month relationships I experience before).

  • Pisces_Girl@xanga

Yes, we were friends before we started dating.

  • xXCrystal_RaindropsXx@xanga

i prefer being friends with the guy i like. its easier for me. i dont have to be someone im not, and that person already knows me who i am.

  • Roadlesstaken@xanga

My most serious ex girlfriend and I were good friends first before dating.  I think that's part of the reason why we can be friends nowadays.
