  • Where Does Corny Become Romantic?

Corny. Cheesy. Cliche. Romantic. Sweet. So sweet, you make me sick. Too sweet, baby just shut the hell up and kiss me.

One of the issues that comes up when you're a romantic is people will call you corny and cheesy and make it sound like it's a BAD thing. I've seen people who are cornier and cheesier than I am, and it makes me a little sick. I guess my tolerance for pet names, cheesy love lines, and cliche presents isn't as high as I expected.

Yet, I would go above and beyond for my girl given that I had the cash. I love pet names, though I don't understand why they're called "pet names". I'm more of a "babe" or "baby" type of guy. Are there any uses for these names? And so what I said something out of a movie? It made her smile didn't it? Not to mention, it's the thought that counts that I would actually hear that quote and store it for the perfect moment. What is so cliche about flowers and chocolate? What is so cliche about teddy bears and candy? It's only cliche because so many people liked it.

I really don't see the difference in hiearchy between those words at the top of this post. How do you measure the cheesy/sweet level? Is it by how much dough you put into the gesture? The effort? The story behind the gesture? I don't get it at all.

See, I have a friend who is one of those guys who's a corny-hater.  He'll laugh in your face and call you stupid and mock you and all that other crap. So naturally when he reads some of the things I write, he has a grand ol' time laughing his ass off. To me, he's quite corny himself. He's very imaginative when it comes to doing gestures and what not, yet apparently that's just him being thoughtful. Good for him. Example.

He finds a way to basically use a yacht for free to have dinner with his girlfriend. After dinner, they go snorkeling and he brings her to a sea cave or something where she finds this giant teddy bear waiting for her. However according to him, that's not corny, that's thoughtful.

Me? I was on the phone with my girlfriend and we had been on the phone for a few hours. She had a bad day after losing her purse so naturally I made everything a little better. It was around 2 in the morning and she was falling asleep, but she refused to go to sleep and she would use that sad sweet voice to get me to stay. To compromise, I told her if she goes to sleep, I would meet her in her dreams and we'd fall asleep together. She whispered "promise baby?" and I said "Promise. I'll never leave you alone, not even in your dreams. I love you."

Celebrating anniversaries comes up, too. Me? 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, a year...so on and so on. Yet, anything that is 3 months or sooner is corny. Saying "I love you" is apparently corny.

Jeeze, why is it so bad to be corny? Feedback please. Any corny examples in your life or thoughts on why corny is or isn't a bad thing?
