A friend asked me yesterday as to the definition of "dating", the reason being she's heard more and more people use that term in a setting connoting friendship, rather than romance, which is confusing her.
I suspect it's mainly because people use the word loosely, and it's perhaps just an HK trend. But three years and six months have passed since I first came across such usage, and still my ear rings of "Mayday! Mayday!" when I see: "so shall we date XYZedZee this/next week?"
Mark Twain once said "When in doubt, tell the truth". So I turned to the most accessible and authoritative source I could find:
That above is my understanding of "date", and what it means to "date" someone. I couldn't have put it better myself. Which is why I never understand what's meant by:
"let's have lunch" --> "ok, i'll date u"
"u free tmr?" --> "i've dated my frd >. Girl: Only if you pay!"
"An activity between 2 mutually attracted people which very often ends in one or both leaving sexually frustrated."
"Australian word for "arse"
"Date-rape without the actual rape part. This includes getting girls drunk and putting pills in their drinks without them knowing and without taking advantage of them afterward. If they are taken advantage of it is date rape, if not, it is simply a date."

Or is it just I'm being too critical of others and picky with words?

..what?
@MilkyWhitesezMoo@xanga - My thoughts exactly....
who goes on dates anymore anyway?
*confused*
I always thought of dates as means to get to know a person who could potentially be a romantic partner.
I'd always dated (made them my gf) in the past based on my attraction to someone (physical or otherwise), never having gotten to know them really well beforehand.
I have tried dating based on friendship, and it was like you said "An activity between 2 mutually attracted people which very often ends in one or both leaving sexually frustrated.", except without the last part.
IMO, dating based on friendship works for me, though the spontaneity of dating a stranger is exciting and more interesting in some ways.
I hear ya
The guy I'm dating is my best friend so it's based on friendship. We also have alot of passion in our relationship so it's also based on romance. It should always be a mix of the two or it probably isn't that great of a relationship.
@pasaway4eva@xanga - Me too.
i like relationships that start off as friendship. you lay ground and you go into a relationship knowing someone. i don't like the idea of just meeting someone and going out on a few dates, then pretty much jumping into a relationships with a stranger.
but that's just me. :)
xo
@pasaway4eva@xanga - I agree :D
@pasaway4eva@xanga - that's what i thought
@pasaway4eva@xanga - that's what i think too.
but i'm still confused on this post. o__O
@XoAsianBabioX@xanga - totally agree.
I think the meaning of the word "date" changes based on who uses it.
what the hell?
me = ConfusedI don't even have this all figured out...im just as confizzled as you
@MilkyWhitesezMoo@xanga - i thought the same thing.
But yeah.... Date can be between a guy and a girl romantically. But two friends can jokingly say, "it's a date' or i can tell someone that I'm "having a date with my girlies tomorrow." It's used pretty loosely. But it still means romantically
It's HK trend? really?
Dating= having an intimate friendship/relationship with someone. The intimateness includes sexual stuff and romance.
That was a loose/bad definition, but that basically covers the broad stuff
just my thoughts though
@Noelleish@xanga - true, because sometimes dating is an exclusive relationship to some people.
To me the word date means to get together with someone that you are interested in. And someone you are wanting to get to know. During the dating phase you are getting to know that person and finding out if he/she are bf/gf material. You enjoy doing things that you both like together. I dated my husband before I chose to have a serious relationship with him. I wanted to make sure that he was someone that would be worth my time of getting to know. And someone I could see myself being with for some time. Eventually we got out of the dating stage and had a serious relationship. And now we are happily married!
dating.. dating.. dating.. probably it`s based on friendship. My classmate before asked me for a date. He is a korean, and i am a Filipino.. It doesn`t matter though. And i agreed with him.
Some says it`s the first step of asking the girl if guy can court her. thats it. simply. But its up to you .. and i know it depends.. Goodluck!
@GiantUnicorn@xanga - nicely put :)
@JessxMaxine@xanga - i agree, nicely said. i would think that someone would randomly ask someone on a date, to get to know them more on a relationship (more than friends level) being thus attracted by their appearance first. but more or less, friends can date, but usually friends are just friends...or one sided.
friendship maybe?
