  • Musical Soulmates?

I was thinking lately about the concept of musical soulmates. This post is actually inspired by the movie Once. In the movie two strangers meet and connect through music that they play together. It is music that initially draws the girl (Marketa Irglova) to the guy (Glen Hansard). She hears him playing on the street and strikes up a conversation that changes the both of them for the better. Their bond is strengthened when they both enter a music shop and start playing their first song together "Falling Slowly". That moment in the movie is one of the most magical scenes in the movie. They share a love for music and confide their stories to each other in between the songs in the movie. I will not ruin the ending for those of you who haven't seen it, but you need to see it, it's so good.

So I guess I'm just asking the opinion of the world of xanga. Do you believe in musical soulmates? Why? Do you consider yourself to have a musical soulmate?

what a charming movie.  I know that if I was walking around a public place and I hear a girl listening to one of my favorite artists (that isn't mainstream) I'll probably make a comment.

That would be cute. such a kodak moment.

Musical soulmates are the sweetest ones in my opinion. You will never get sick of each other's collection again.

To answer the question--it could happen, but it's about as likely as any other kind of soulmate. I'm content to have a girl that appreciates/enjoys the music that I make. XD

  • MOOOOOOF@xanga

    never even heard of them.
hm, i should watch this movie, sounds heart lifting. (:

My boyfriend and I are musical soulmates, apparantly...

We're both Music majors, we had a couple music classes together, and the first time I knew he really liked me was when he scooted over to where I was sitting in our music seminar and had a shy grin, asking me about the lecturer and stuff. :)

We share our flute exercises to each other. HAHAAHA.

  • texacota@xanga

    Uh yeah defintely.
I don't think a musician can really date anybody outside of their profession, or outside of the arts.
Artists have a very different view of the world than anybody outside of it, and it's very difficult for the two of them to co-exsist in such an intimate way as a relationship.

In my personal opinion and this is not meant to offend or lessen anybodies view of their relationship, but I think that the relationship between artists is the deepest. Or maybe that's unfair, it's the most connected.

(by the way, I'm not just talking about two certified artists, some people can be innately musical or artistic but not recognize it in themselves.)

I'm going to watch this movie. Sounds very cute :)

Anyone who loves Kamelot can be my musical soulmate =)

  • xica_iris@xanga

YES! I have a musical soulmate. I met him at a local coffe shop...sounds like this movie...now I need to watch this movie!! Anyway, this guy is a great musician. His music attracts me and he's told me my voice attracts him. We were lovers a couple of years ago, but unfortunately events in our lives did not keep us together. He's doing his own thing, and I am too. There's something that always seems to attract us together and it's always about the music. I don't believe his my only soulmate though...

  • jeezshoua@xanga

It could happen but I don't think it's for me.  Lol.

  • mewithoutu77@xanga

i loved the movie.  as much as i love music, if i don't find a music soulmate, i could live with that as well.

I most certainly do believe in musical soulmates, and I think I have found myself one. We aren't romantic soulmates, as he is married to someone else, but we performed together within about 45 minutes of meeting each other, without ever having practiced together. We have done several shows together since then, and through our shared musical experience, have become good friends.
I think making music with anyone can be a deep bonding experience, so I think I actually have a lot of musical soulmates, but this person is particularly special to me. It's like he's become my brother.

  • herecomesthemoon@xanga

i have a musical soulmate- but we're just friends =P

  • spidergrass@xanga

I listen to some of every genre...literally...I don't think I would really have a musical soulmate like that.
I'm a music major and have yet to date someone else though that was not a serious musician.

  • theRyeCatcher@xanga

Aw, that's such a sweet plot. I think I'll have to watch this film soon. But I can't help think of High School Musical... what with the music... and the "soulmates". I think musical soulmates can happen. It's just another thing that you'll have in common, and allow you to see the same bands, thus strengthening that link.

  • colormethespian@xanga

Yesssssss I do...however, I don't have one. Sooo - if anyone's a Hollywood Undead, Brokencyde or 3oh!3 fan, you should totally hit me up. ;P

  • UknowWutsux@xanga

I believe in music soulmates.I'm trying to find mine, but it's a difficult thing to do. I once played a song with this one girl just by chance. it was really beautiful, but never happened again and have no idea who she was. so you know...Who knows!

  • JessxMaxine@xanga

    i think it could happen.
    this movie sounds cute.

    xo

  • SomethingAboutKaren@xanga

I totally want a musical soulmate that can sing duets with me and accompany us on the guitar! <3 gahaha sappiest comment I ever made :P

  • nodnarbassoon@xanga

I'm a music major... I could date outside of the music department, however, they have to be just as tasteful and in tune with the music as me.  Artistic talent and creativity are the two most attractive things for me.  Everyone I've dated has been musical.  If you don't have the connection, we're not going to work out.

I believe my musical soulmate is out there... maybe I've met her, maybe I haven't.

This movie is definitely one of my favorites.  AMAZING.

@EccentricSiren@xanga - I STRONGLY agree!  Making music together is like sex, or late night conversations that go deep into the night.  Once you do it, you share a connection, and it's definitely one of the deepest possible.

I'm a metalhead in love with another metalhead, so yes. I have found my musical soul mate.
