  • Denying Condoms

I have bought condoms in the past with no problem from employees in the store. This is why I surprised when a younger friend of mine approached me a few years ago telling me that she was denied condoms at the drug store! The woman at the register literally told her that she wouldn't sell condoms to her!  My friend was very upset by this so I ended up giving her some condoms that I had then taking her money and buying a box for her with NO problem from the register.

I've even heard of doctors denying patients birth control for whatever reason they can come up with!

Do you think it's wrong to deny a person any form of contraception just because they're too young? Do you think this is done because the individual believes the young person shouldn't be having sex? Shouldn't we,  as a society, be happy to see young people taking the steps to protect themselves during sex?

Ugh, that is so lame. You can't prevent people from having sex, but you can prevent them from producing a kid out of it.

  • JessxMaxine@xanga

i don't think anyone should be denied condoms or birth control. they are paying for it and the people/doctors aren't their parents.

    xo

I think shops and doctors should be required to provide birth control if someone asks for it. A person should be allowed to protect him or herself.

  • MarchingDuck@xanga

Depending on what country you live in its illegal (its illegal in the US). I would have asked for a manager or write the company over it. They can get in very big trouble for things like that. Never take crap like that from a sales idiot. Seriously, ask for a manager next time this happens.

  • jupiter312@xanga

I think that's so wrong!  There is no age limit on when one can purchase condoms, so the lady had no right to deny her them.

  • causewehavealovesostrong@xanga

I wouldn't look at it as they're too young to have sex.  I would look at it as at least they're trying to protect themselves from getting STDs or an unwanted pregnancy.  I think it is wrong because how would you feel if the employee/doctor saw that same person again only pregnant or has an STD?  If a teenager wants to have sex, there's really no stopping them.

The first time I had sex I wasn't on birth control, and he didn't use a condom.  Luckily, I didn't get pregnant or an STD, but still, it was really stupid decision.

some people think that if they don't have condoms, they won't have sex. It's wrong for that lady to deny that, but I guess she didn't feel that your friend was responsible enough, haha. I don't know if people should be having sex at a young age, though :-/ It's all up to them, but in my opinion, I think kids shouldn't be having sex so early. No law should enforce it because nothing would change except more money to the police, ha.

  • kaleidescopeeyes88@xanga

Your friend should have demanded to see the manager.  The sales clerk had no right to not let her purchase the condoms.

  • yourkbear@xanga

Do they actually believe that denying the condoms/birth control will stop teens from having sex? That is so stupid! They are going to be having sex either way; the least we can do is support safe sex!

  • doLc3@xanga

If they get and STD, it's the cashier's fault.

  • xourlastendeavorx@xanga

If any moralist idiot believes they're stopping the obvious by not handing out the safer means, to the end, is truly stupid. People are gonna do it, no matter what. And perhaps they should realize that a safer method, which shows both sense and responsibility in the child, is better than just no condom at all. Well, at least for the safety reasons lol

  • xpialadocious@xanga

Yeah everyone's brilliant here.  The job of sales staff is to SELL STUFF.  Done.

  • atheista@xanga

That is idiotic! A human attempting to be responsible and yet prevented from doing so-- insane! In fact, it would be a much better idea for people to have access to free condoms. Besides, condoms and pregnancy tests are probably the 2 most stolen things in drug stores (provided that customers have access to these, sometimes they are behind the counter). If this individual plans to deny the right to protection, would they also deny people deemed to be to young the right to buy Plan B?

  • Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga

If you dont agree with it, dont work in the store. A sales person has no right to tell you what you can & cant buy. They can be fired & the store can face charges for refusing to serve a paying customer. I'm not saying someone's beliefs are wrong but you dont force it on someone!

  • AdrianRamirez@xanga

I have to agree with the majority of the comments here. I've never had an issue with this, myself, but I've heard of other people who have. And, as far as I know, denying the sale of condoms to anyone in the US is not legal.

There are, however, preventatives that cannot be sold to everyone, such as Plan B. I think alot of people get confused and just say "fuck it, nothing for no one!"

    @steph - Perfectly said.

  • splitsecondshot@xanga

I'm sorry but I lol'd when I read this. Like everyone said she was probably thinking that if underage teens don't have a condom they won't have sex. I remember my cousin's first kid. He was born because they couldn't get a condom and he "didn't pull out quick enough". x]

  • Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga

They do have a right to deny service to someone, but for that reason, it's not really effective.

  • ViciousGrin63@xanga

I thought stores had the right to refuse service to anyone. If that's true, then the clerk, no matter how fucking stupid they are, is allowed to not sell someone condoms.

  • BoStOnIaNMoMmY@xanga

Honestly it all depends on how old your friend was at the time, like if she was under 16 then maybe i would understand where the ladie was coming from. but over that age people have no right to tell them they cant buy condoms thats pretty much telling them to not use protection and get all kinds of STD's and thats not right and where ever she went that place should be shut down.

  • HiArianne@xanga

Ohhh lawd, I had a conversation about this with my friend-- it happened to her, too.  Stupidly enough, twenty minutes later, she made her boyfriend buy it when she was to the side, and the same cashier let him buy it.

    Sexisttttt.

PS, It IS illegal in the US to deny condoms to a minor.

  • jeezshoua@xanga

    @ViciousGrin63@xanga - Ditto.

The clerk has the right to refuse service to anyone even if it is condoms whom the buyer is trying to buy to be responsible for her actions.  If she can't buy it there, buy it elsewhere.  It's not the end of the world.

And like @BoStOnIaNMoMmY@xanga said, depending how old your friend was and how she looked during that time, the clerk probably thought that if she don't have condoms, she won't do it.  Naive, yes, but she probably thought it was the best idea during that time trying to prevent someone to have sex by denying her protection.

@doLc3@xanga - I don't think it's necessarily the cashier's fault if she does end up getting any sort of STD.  There are other stores that she can go to buy condoms.  Ultimately, the decision and responsibility still falls under her even if she was deny protection from the drug store that she went to.

  • Lynnjynh9315@xanga

    Condom's better than nothing.

  • The_Life_Of_A_Poet2@xanga

If you can't stop it- then you might as well protect them and the rest of the population. That's just lame sauce!

  • The_Life_Of_A_Poet2@xanga

@jeezshoua@xanga - ....although you make a good point- I hadn't even thought about how old the friend looked.

  • turnyalightsdownlow@xanga

as a sales clerk myself we can legally deny a sale. i've never done it for condoms but i've done it for selling ciggs to a minor. i think it's really stupid of that lady to deny them because its not like no condoms = no sex. i def applaud your friend for being that brave because to this day i still have never bought a condom or a pack of them.
