  • Good Music for "Getting Down"

In a recent piece on Katy Perry in ELLE magazine (don't ask how I know it exists), the young singer is quoted thusly, "[E]verybody is talking about Kings of Leon and how [Only By the Night] is the best record to have sex to. It's so true." Hmm...and I was just enjoying the album on its own merits!

Music to "get down to" is a prevalent subject for a lot of us young Xangans. Of course, in popular media, the stereotype is some faux-jazz music used to enhance the aura of seduction. But music for, ahem, "extracurricular activity" also serves a pragmatic function: disguising your bedroom exploits from other residents in your housing complex. The anxiety about not wanting to be heard during sex reminds me of a Mancouch piece from some while back from Steph on Datingish. In a somewhat similar vein, she did not want to "do it" with other family members around, listening, knowing, judging. So she and her BF planned to have sex in public places, at least away from their families' prying ears and eyes.

For some, though, sex in public might be a bit uncomfortable, especially if the plan is a public bathroom. Gross. So, for those playing the at-home version, the trick is to play loud enough disguise music, but also have it be somewhat seductive and of merit. In a good number of amateur "pr0n" videos (don't ask how I know they exist), you have a couple in a dorm or other small room as close to "making love" as one might expect two college-age teens to get with music blaring. If I were the girl, though, the experience would be ruined for me if my boyfriend wanted to get busy and turned on, say, a Staind playlist. I'd feel like slitting my wrists before foreplay was even over.

What is some respectable music to have sex to?
