  • Life, Version 2.0

    (Motiv by Nafiri + Tracy.)

I sometimes wonder what life would be like if it included computer functions. The word "lost" would lose meaning once Ctrl+F escaped into the real world. Searching up names reunites old friends and lovers. Information is free and plentiful and instant and constantly updated. Everybody is beautiful with Photoshop. People are not afraid to be honest, thanks to the protective screen of their provocative pseudonyms. It's easy to zoom in or out - no more need for glasses. Volume adjustments at the touch of a button make hearing aids obsolete. Copy and paste is a cinch. Everything can be archived, saved, preserved forever. Delete your worst times, bookmark your favorites, share with the world how much you love Johnny Depp. Go backwards in your disasters, go forward in your accomplishments, refresh your day. Edit, cut, and my personal favorite: repeat. Repeat those beloved memories in as pristine a condition as the day they were made. Relive the best moments of your life with no blurs or missing parts. Enjoy that first kiss as many times as you want. It's not going anywhere. Trashing emotional baggage with a mouse drag to the Recycling Bin and pausing when your heart beats too quickly for you to think straight - easy, right? Maybe not...

Even with all these powers, I don't think any single or combination computer function could do anything to control love. What if you hate a loved one? Do you star them or cut them out of your memory? What if you slump into self-deprecation at the coldness of your lover? Do you delete yourself out of existence? Love, that mischievous, fickle being - nothing in life (whether real or virtual) can correct such a beautiful mistake.
