  • What Is A "Creeper"?

    Miss Rhino

After writing this post, I had a request to write an entry on the true definition of "creeper." It's a term that girls throw around pretty loosely. "There was a total creeper checking me out at the mall the other day" or "I saw a creeper lurking by the girl's bathroom." These days nearly anyone who loiters could be considered a creeper by those standards. So in my quest to hunt down the proper definition of the term "creeper", I began my search at Urban Dictionary, as per usual.

    1. Creeper 1288 up, 177 down love it hate it

A person who does weird things, like stares at you while you sleep, or looks at you for hours through a window. usually a close friend or relative. you know right away if that person is a creeper or does creeper things. it is not hard to spot the creeper.

Valid. But I'm pretty sure strangers can be even bigger creepers so I'm not completely satisfied with this definition.

    3. Creeper 541 up, 167 down love it hate it

Older men who hang out in college clubs and bars and stare at girls half their age and occasionally make obscene gestures and comments.

Creepy? Yes. But I think that is more along the lines of pathetic and downright rude.

    11. Creeper 38 up, 15 down love it hate it

1.Anyone who defies social and/or etiquette norms by acting in a particularly odd manner. This can be achieved by staring at someone for long extended periods of time, bringing up topics that aren't socially acceptable in conversation, or just being plainly and unabashedly creepy to those around him/her.

Well maybe this is a social anxiety disorder? We shouldn't be so quick to judge.

    6. Creeper 187 up, 58 down love it hate it

an offensively unimaginative word devised by tacky, braindead college students to describe people they deem sinister, indecorous, uncouth, or otherwise unpleasant.

Ding Ding Ding! This could be the closest thing there is to the true definition of a creeper.

I'm not going to pretend that I am not one of those tacky, braindead college students that has called many a poor soul "creeper" in my day. But sometimes they bring it on themselves. For example, I was out one night with a friend, and I caught some man's eyes from across the bar. He slowly made his way over to me, but not to say hello or introduce himself. Just to linger behind me. I would walk away, and he would follow. He even grabbed on to my belt. I shot him death glares, but he wouldn't back off. My friend even caught him sniffing my hair. Yikes!

So in conclusion, the term "creeper" has yet to be properly defined and it seems to be subjective according to situation and personal experience. But if I had to guess, you would probably find a picture of that man if Webster's ever decides to acknowledge it as an actual word.

Have you ever seen a "creeper" at work? What do you think the proper definition is? Or do you think calling someone a creeper is simply offensive and undeserved?
