What Is A "Creeper"?

Miss Rhino
After writing this post, I had a request to write an entry on the true definition of "creeper." It's a term that girls throw around pretty loosely. "There was a total creeper checking me out at the mall the other day" or "I saw a creeper lurking by the girl's bathroom." These days nearly anyone who loiters could be considered a creeper by those standards. So in my quest to hunt down the proper definition of the term "creeper", I began my search at Urban Dictionary, as per usual.1. Creeper 1288 up, 177 down
A person who does weird things, like stares at you while you sleep, or looks at you for hours through a window. usually a close friend or relative. you know right away if that person is a creeper or does creeper things. it is not hard to spot the creeper.
Valid. But I'm pretty sure strangers can be even bigger creepers so I'm not completely satisfied with this definition.3. Creeper 541 up, 167 down
Older men who hang out in college clubs and bars and stare at girls half their age and occasionally make obscene gestures and comments.
Creepy? Yes. But I think that is more along the lines of pathetic and downright rude.11. Creeper 38 up, 15 down
1.Anyone who defies social and/or etiquette norms by acting in a particularly odd manner. This can be achieved by staring at someone for long extended periods of time, bringing up topics that aren't socially acceptable in conversation, or just being plainly and unabashedly creepy to those around him/her.
Well maybe this is a social anxiety disorder? We shouldn't be so quick to judge.6. Creeper 187 up, 58 down
an offensively unimaginative word devised by tacky, braindead college students to describe people they deem sinister, indecorous, uncouth, or otherwise unpleasant.
Ding Ding Ding! This could be the closest thing there is to the true definition of a creeper.
I'm not going to pretend that I am not one of those tacky, braindead college students that has called many a poor soul "creeper" in my day. But sometimes they bring it on themselves. For example, I was out one night with a friend, and I caught some man's eyes from across the bar. He slowly made his way over to me, but not to say hello or introduce himself. Just to linger behind me. I would walk away, and he would follow. He even grabbed on to my belt. I shot him death glares, but he wouldn't back off. My friend even caught him sniffing my hair. Yikes!
So in conclusion, the term "creeper" has yet to be properly defined and it seems to be subjective according to situation and personal experience. But if I had to guess, you would probably find a picture of that man if Webster's ever decides to acknowledge it as an actual word.
Have you ever seen a "creeper" at work? What do you think the proper definition is? Or do you think calling someone a creeper is simply offensive and undeserved?

the first definition would certify Edward Cullen as a creeper and all the twilight fans are simply infatuated with a version of "creeper-esque" man everywhere. haahaha
I have honestly maybe only seen 3 or 4 real creepers... yet i've heard the girls that I always hang out with label many as such.
Honestly most of the time it is just a silly degenerative group mentality of labeling any awkward seeming person. When really that person is probably completely innocent of being what a real creeper is. And so most of the time it seems completely undeserved.
@kor_girl@xanga - agreed. he watches her sleep. o_o
@michellemegatron@xanga - hahaha, edward is a creeper!
and I'm not going to lie, I probably use the word at least once a day.typically refering to my friend "stop being such a creeper."
it's so popular it's hard to avoid.
@kor_girl@xanga - HAHA you got the point! Creepy things happen only in Twilight...
@michellemegatron@xanga - I don't think it counts as creeping if the person being followed likes it.
I dont think its offensive and undeserved at all. I mean, unless your just throwing the word around, people do things that cause them be creepers.
If you creep someone out your a creeper. Bottom line.
The scenerio that you described, this guy creeped you out, no?.
There is this guy that takes the same bus as me.. one time he told me that he was eaves dropping on my conversation with my friend and noticed I said I had a boyfriend, and that he would have asked me out if I didnt. (Im pretty sure he's at least 30 years older than me.) After that I avoid him, but he still tries to sit as close as possible to me on the bus and just stares and listenes to me and my friends conversation. If Im not talking to someone he'll walk over to me and start talking and asking me questions even though its obvious I dont want to talk to him. Oh did I mention he randomly told me he lives with his parents? CREEEEEPPEEERRRRRRR.
haha my friend got drunk cried to this girl he's been friends with for years almost puked on her then like tried to take her bra off. that make him a creeper?
I think #6 nails it on the head.
Haha I probably use this word multiple times a day. I think anyone who is...creepy or creeping around is a creeper. For example, if I'm lurking behind my friends jokingly in a picture, I would call myself a creeper. I dont think it sould be taken offensively xD
I was called a creeper for simply saying high to a certain person whenever I saw her.
@InTheThin@xanga - Hahaha, that's true. Touche.
@ChelseaSmilesMore@xanga - Hahaha, me too. It's so easy to use, lmfao.
edward cullen is so a creeper. a possessive one, at that.
It's subjective slang. If you get chills and your own horror movie theme music starts playing in your head, you've got a creeper on your hands.
Bravo! =]
@another_rebel_without_a_cause@xanga - truth.
to me creeper is offencive when it is used to describe some oen you dont know unless there is the whole stalker rapest vibe going
it is ok if you are talking about your friends
it is not ok if the erson abviously is just feeling out of place akward or like they would rather be some weres else but are trying to do something to make the best of a situation
now from my past i have been called a dreeper many times for the reasons that i am weird(i take pride in that cause those who know me seem to think it makes me fun to hang out with)i do random things and say random thoughts, i tend to say what i see as a fact sorry but i try to be honest
so some of those have gotten me called a creeper.... think that is right?
i use creeper all the time, but i'm always joking.
one of the guys i hang out with occasionally will just stare at you blatantly until you're forced to look at him because it's so obvious. like one of those looks that bore into the side of your skull. so when he does that, i just go "can you stop being such a creeper and staring?"
yeeeeah, i don't think it's that serious of a word, honestly...
I think a creeper is someone you're not interested in but who follows you around, won't leave you alone, does things like try find out your schedule and your contact info, and continuously asks (or tries to ask) you out. And they don't get the hint even though you've turned them down multiple times.
...
AND they give you bad vibes. They tend to be older than you're comfortable with too (though some people have no problems with dating someone twice their age).
girls can be that too
LOL @ all the commenters who immediately described Eddie Cullen as a creeper. Took the words right out of my mouth!
i nicknamed my friend "creeper" since he perfectly fits definition number 11 and other creepy reasons. he is socially awkward and fell in love with me even though i had a boyfriend. so when i started reading this i instantly pictured him. i agree it always makes a bad connotation. but, i do use that word when its necessary. such as, theres a guy on the corner staring at you, hes a creeper. and if my friend is reading the newspaper and they have that weird look in their eye, theyre a creeper.
at my school, there's a clique called the Creeper Crew (which I'm in) in the 2010 graduating class that is comprised of the most straight edge kids and good kids. not creepy at all. I love my fellow creepers.
creeper-(n.) Edward Cullen
