Baby Penguin Has Two Adoptive Daddies
This might be the most adorable thing I've read all day. via AFP:Two homosexual penguins have successfully hatched an egg that was rejected by its parents and are now proudly rearing the chick, the German zoo housing the couple said on Wednesday."Z and Vielpunkt, both males, gladly accepted their 'Easter present' and began straight away with hatching the egg," said the zoo in Bremerhaven, in northern Germany.
"Since the chick arrived they are behaving in the same way as one would expect a heterosexual couple to do. Both happy fathers are now diligently handling the everyday care ... of their adopted offspring," the zoo said.
Z and Vielpunkt are part of a six-strong gay community among the zoo's collection of endangered Humboldt penguins who rose to fame in 2005 when four Swedish females were brought in an unsuccessful attempt to "cure" them.
"Homosexuality is nothing unusual among animals," the zoo said. "Sex and coupling up in our world do not necessarily have anything to do with reproduction."
The Humboldt penguin is normally found on the coast of Chile and Peru, but numbers have dropped to between 12,000 and 20,000 as industrial fishing methods have led to dwindling stocks of the anchovies on which they feed.
I guess I can't ask any questions about you and your rookery, so...would you consider adopting a child? Do you know anyone who's been adopted?

I would love to adopt a child, (when financially stable); somehow I expected a different question for the story though - lol I dont know why?
If I could not have my own children I would adopt.
I've thought about adopting, especially locally.
My ex-bf from about 5 years ago was adopted. His mother was a crack addict and he was born with FAS he was put up for adoption when she committed suicide. He's a very disturbed child.
this penguin story is amazing!
@wolvenchic@xanga - lol i thought a different question would be asked to
I would love to adopt an older child. I'm sure we all know that once they pass the toddler stage the chances of a kid getting adopted become very slim. I would love to give a home to a child who would otherwise not have any.
Either way, I'm not made to handle the stress and patience of taking care of a young child. I can handle teenagers and older kids much better.
OMG I just read a story like that 2 weeks ago! Only the penguins I read about were (and I believe still are) in the Central Park Zoo =)
Omigod, I love this. Too freaking cute. I'm totally adopting, when I decide to have kids. I want to have my own, and one or two adopted kids. My roommate freshman year was adopted. She never mentioned it much, though.
I have 2 cousins who were adopted and one of them is closer than my actual blood cousins inspite of a 12 yr age difference. :)
lol haha aw that's cute. i think i would want my own kids first, then if i still want, adopt a kid.
first off i want to say I didn't know animals could be homosexual
to answer your question i want one child of birth, and adopt after that
That is adorable.
Adorable! I usually don't like other people's children... so I probably wouldn't adopt. I don't really have a strong desire to have children of my own.
But really really cute penguins.
What a sweet story!
If I get married, I would actually want to adopt. Why bring another child into the world when there are so many out there already who don't have the loving and caring parents that they should've had from birth?
That, and I don't want to go through all that pregnancy stuff. I think I'd adopt two children, and maaaaybe have one of my own afterwards if I still want to.
my mom, her brother and one of my friends and her brother were all adopted
That's adorable.
And I'm adopted. I never want to have my own children but I think I'd be open to adopting a child once I'm married and where I want to be in the world.
If I couldn't have my own baby, I would adopt. Every child deserves a parent.
@Mangonese@xanga - I love penguins too. They can shoot their excrement farther than any other animal, as far as I know...which is totally awesome in my book, no fooling! What unique animals. Have you seen Happy Feet? :D
To answer the original blog question, however: my husband may as well have been adopted- he went to live with his aunt and uncle in his mid-teens because his mom couldn't take care of him anymore.
If I couldn't have children of my own, I would consider adopting. I don't know what age or where from, but I'm very fond of the "let the child pick you" strategy... You just know when there's a bond. Or I would try to become a foster parent instead, and accept whatever children the state needed me to take care of at the time. Much harder, in my opinion, but the US is in big need of decent foster families to help take on the load of so many unfortunate children!!
