  • Living at Home - The Double Standard

I’ll be honest. I’m 22 and I live at home. I go to school and I have a job. It’s mostly due to the recession, yes, because I can't afford rent on my own without working another job full time on top of school; even though my mom said she’d help me start out when I get my first place, it’s better if I stay at home. I’ll spend more money out there. I WAS going to move out when I was 19 and we were looking at places and everything, but things started going belly-up and mom told me to just stay home for now.

Good thing I listened because when the recession got worse, I had security. A majority of the people I knew who hauled ass to move out after high school are literally paying for it now and they don’t want to go back home either, because they're ashamed to admit things are bad or they parted on not-so-nice terms with their parents and the parents are teaching them a hard lesson but not letting them back in.

I don’t have a curfew, but out of respect for my mom, I do call if I’m out late or working overtime so she doesn’t worry (and so she doesn’t think I’m asleep and put the deadbolt on!) and I’m probably one of a few kids over 18 that calls to see why she’s not home when she usually is. My mom gets a kick out of telling people at work about that.

My view on the subject is this: as long as you’re trying, I wouldn’t mind dating a guy who still lives at home too.  By trying I mean going to college and/or working. I think a majority of us born in the 80s/early 90s will be at home for a while longer because rent and mortgages are sky high and jobs are scarce. I asked mom what she thought of me getting a place with a few friends; she didn’t like the sound of it. There's no real privacy and if someone decides to leave, we’re stuck. People used to tease someone who was past 18 and still lived at home, but now it’s the norm.

I don’t see what the big deal is with some girls who say they don’t want a man who lives at home when they’re still at home themselves! Maybe they assume a guy should be self-sufficient at 18, on his own and able to dote on a girlfriend? I really want guys' opinions on this too. I have guy friends who still live at home for the same reasons as mine; they work, go to school and date just fine, so why is it that with girls it’s seemingly okay but it's taboo for  guys?

Do you date someone who still lives with his or her parents? For guys, why do you think some girls say it’s bad for a guy to still live at home in his late teens/20s?

My fiance and I still live with our parents haha it's cheap and we can save more money that way

  • immaairheadxl@xanga
  • happyobligations@xanga

Yeah he lives with his parents and it's not a sign of weakness or instability or anything. My sister still lives with me and my parents too and she's 26.

  • icecrepas@xanga

my parents sold their house (which i bought for them, incidentally) and crashed at my loft.

so no, parentals don't really make or break the deal.
although having a tryst while your parents watch soaps is kinda awkward.
so do as i did.  i gtfo.
hotels - that's why god made 'em.
  • chococatcrazi@xanga

I'd say living with the parents is just fine considering you're in your twenties and are going to school, but I think once a person is around thirty it's no longer acceptable.

  • joycemiles@xanga

hmm. I guess if you're out of high school, girls want men to be able to carry their own lives by themselves and not "need" to stay with their mother. Maybe some people are talking about guys who take money from their mom's house, doesn't work, and doesn't do their own laundry. Who knows.

I'm not sure, though. I really wouldn't mind dating a guy who lives at home if they are responsible people- I LOVE my family so I would gladly live home.. but home's in Japan so I don't have enough money. haha. off topic!

  • charm2030

I don't see what the big deal is. My boyfriend lived on his own for years but his dad gave him a very long term project to do when he was 24 so he moved home. When we met, he told me he was "living with distant relatives who are barely home." Later, when we started dating, of course I found out his "distant relatives" were not so "distant" after all. Later, he decided to cough up $1000 (plus utilities)/month just so he could say he had his own place, even though he's still at his parents' for the most part...I don't think that's very good financial management...

I guess it's the culture. I grew up where you're expected to live with your parents until you're married if you're a girl and you NEVER leave your parents' place if you're the only son. I always thought it's both your right and responsibiity to stay with your parents as they age (so you can take care of them just like they took care of you when you were little)...I don't know why people think it's such a bad thing...

  • d0llh0use@xanga

nothing wrong with living at home as long as your doing something with your life (school, work) rather than sit on the couch and watch tv all day.  productivity...

seems like you have that under control so good for you.  if your working you could also help out your parents financially so its a win win situation.  nothing wrong with living at home as long as your productive and it makes mom and dad happier knowing their offspring is doing something with their life rather than depending on them all the time.

  • BoStOnIaNMoMmY@xanga

Honestly the way the economy is right now...i would dear someone try and crack jokes about someone living with there parents because the joke would actually be on them because they living the hard life not u ya know?

Honestly i think if i wasnt married i would still be living with my mom and step pops. i also believe that if my husband wasnnt married to me he would be living with his parents to and he is a hard working man.

but like chococatcrazi@xanga said when ur in ur thirtys then there would be a serious issue even if u have a job its just not cute anymore lol.

  • MangoWOW@xanga

I don't see a problem with living with parents. Especially with the way the economy is, it's very understandable.
But at the same time I'm only 20... so yea. It's probably a norm for people my age to be living at home.

I think the age where I'd start raising my eyebrows would be in the late 20's. There are, obviously, exceptions. Everyone has a story. But around that time the average American has graduated and started becoming more of an individual.

  • sorrento12@xanga

hm.. this is an interesting post. i'm living at home and working and just trying to save up for a place of my own. at the same time, i do chores and stuff and earn my keep. lol! but i suppose girls desire guys who have moved out possibly because they are more financially stable and independent? i dunno. of course, that isn't always the case like OP said, especially in this economy. still, i do feel somewhat embarrassed when i tell other people i live at home. but my friends are cool and they think it's good to save money, too. so it just depends.

  • Pcgecko85@xanga

It's fine to live with your parents.  I haven't lived with my parents for 3 years, and don't plan on going back since I got a good job once I graduate in 2 weeks.  However my gf lives with her parents which is annoying at times, but tolerable.

  • Murphy_Rants@xanga

I'm fine with living at home because it's only about 4 months a year while I'm out of school. If I got a place of my own over the summer it would be pure crazy. (Figure I already save about $4000 there) My mom is cool with me living at home as long as I have the money to buy my own stuff. (Well, she gets the food)

  • anonymous

Maybe I'm naive, but I didn't know this double standard existed.  I figured it was "bad" for anyone, male or female, to live at home beyond a certain age.  I honestly think it depends mostly on age.  If you're 25 or younger, it's not a big deal, especially in these economic times.  After that, though, if you're living at home, you should at least pay your own way.  And by 30, you shouldn't live at home at all.

  • lolquack@xanga

Wow, theyre no negative comments towards this.

Yes I agree if you were born late 80's early 90's its more common to be living at home. Before than everyone was bitching bout how they want a MAN and not a little boy

My boyfriend and I right now live with his parents. We want to live on our own, but we BOTH need to be on our feet. He has a job, a very good job, and I'm trying to get one,so this way I could go back to school. But everyone is right. the economy is bad.

And I would never disrespect a guy who lives with his parents. When I was 15 I dated a guy who was 19 and still lived with his parents. He never moved out til he was 21. and thats when he went to the army.

  • lesprit__descalier@xanga

i say, live with the family as long as you can afford to, because one day you'll miss it dearly and you can't go back.

of course, don't be a bum. you can still have independence and your own life while living with parents.
  • Roadlesstaken@xanga

I like the way you think.  I have a couple reasons why I'm still at home.  If I really wanted to I can move out, but I'm trying to pay off my student loans first before I take on new debt.  I need to save up money right now for grad school too.

Also, my baby brother kinda needs help from me haha.  Over the past year I've drastically helped improve his grades by tutoring him and giving him the attention I wasn't able to give while away at college.  I'm very thankful to have this opportunity, because once I move out it's gonna be hard to help him out as much.

  • UnopenedSuitcases@xanga

i'm almost 19. and i still live at home. I don't mind it, free food and shelter and all. But the curfew bothers me a little. I have a curfew and its all blah =T.

  • nosillassim@xanga

i would date someone that lives at home. i don't want to cohabitate until i'm married, adn if he doesn't have a house yet, we can do the house shopping together and move in right when we're married. i'm 22 and will move home when i graduate to make money to buy a house without going into debt & wasting money on rent PLUS the 25 year old i have eyes for lives at home.

honestly, to me, renting is the dumbest thing a person can do, and buying a house is the biggest decision a couple may make. i want to make that decision with my husband when i have one, and i want both he and i to be starting fresh- like we're leaving the transition point of our parents' homes and making our own household in our own house. i'm at college now in my own apartment because i'm in grad school, but once i graduate, home to my parents i will go with my degree in my hand, and straight to my savings & loans will my hundred thou pharmacist paychecks go.

  • binonuts@xanga

i had a girl tell me she wouldnt date a guy who didnt hav his own place, and she is only 19 and lives at home herself. i think its complete BS. most of the time, girls think that way so that they can be little sluts and sleep with him whenever they want and not hafta worry about parents. but i think u should date someone for who they are, and not because they hav money, their own place, a car, etc.

  • Mangonese@xanga

I love at home at 19, and my boyfriend lives with his grandmother at 20.

It's a bad time. Hard to find jobs. But as soon as we can afford it, we'll be moving out. :)

  • Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga

@purplepanda27@xanga - That's a good way of thinking of it. So true.

@binonuts@xanga - I know! That annoys the shit out of me. And most of those heifers dont have a job & mooch off their parents. I worked since I was 18 with the exception of illness & surgery & these girls want a man with money & his own place when they cant even do for themselves.

@lilsexypyrogirl@xanga - You're right, I dont think people would crack jokes as much as they would have like 10 years ago. My sister graduated college, got married & moved out all in the same summer when I was 11 & I thought I'd do the same thing, but times change.

  • Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga

@Roadlesstaken@xanga - I REALLY like your answer. Some girls I've heard say a guy is a scrub or broke living in his parents house because he isnt trying to do anything. It's not true. School is so expensive now, people are paying for their college education in the 30s when they've been out of school for a decade or more. And now that some jobs want more education people like my sister go BACK to school in their 30s. It's expensive & time consuming.

I think living at home & saving is easier. I have a now ex friend who lived with a guy simply for the apartment, food & security. She made good money but she whined that if she lived alone, she'd have to pay rent & untilities & wouldnt be able to do all she did like eat out & hang with her friends. Now that she screwed up that situation, she got all depressed & she's miserable.

Make Money Fast and Easy$$$ Posted by Brook on June 03, 19103 at 14:59:13:

$MAKE LOTS OF QUICK CASH THE EASY WAY$$ Dear Internet User, Good day, This article I've written is all about the fact where I earned an ASTOUNDING amount of money in less than a month and I've decided to share or reveal the secrets behind making big bucks in the Mail Order Business. So all money seekers, read this carefully. **READING THIS COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE!** I found this on a bulletin board like this one and decided to try it. A little while back, I was browsing through several newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought, "Yeah right, this must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you need to send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured: "what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right?" Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works.... Also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start making more money than you thought possible by doing something so easy! SUGGESTION: Read this entire message carefully! (print it out or download it.) Follow the simple directions and watch the money come in! It's easy. It's legal. And, your investment is only $6.00 (Plus postage). IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is virtually no risk - it really works!!!! If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends. PLEASE NOTE: Please follow these directions EXACTLY, and $50,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. Please continue it?s success by carefully adhering to the instructions. You will now become part of the Mail Order business. In this business your product is not solid and tangible, it's a service. You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. However, the money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income which is made from people like you and me asking to be included in that list. ========================================== -->HERE ARE 4 EASY STEPS TO GET STARTED<-- STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope ( Please make sure that the bill wouldn't be noticed in the envelope to prevent thievery). Send out US $ DOLLAR, so it would be more acceptable. STEP 2: Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them properly. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the phrase, "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST.", your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! You are requesting for a legitimate service and you are paying for it! Like most of us, I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Mail the US$6.00 to the following addresses:

1)Brandon Corbin 307N Church St Lancaster PA 17603

    2) Lierin Quinn P.O. Box 242 Bausman PA 17504

    3) L Middlebrook P.O. Box 2079 Beaverton Ontario Canada L0K 1A0

    4) Phyllis M Whiddon 256, JD Road DeRidder LA 70634

5)D Goldring 1368 Kenton Road Parkville Maryland 21234

    6) Ryan Clark 7280 Kathy Street Easton Maryland 21601

STEP 3: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list. STEP 4: Copy this article. Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 2.4million groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18, Section 1302 and 1341, US Postal and Lottery Laws or Title 18, Section 3005 in the US code, also in the code of Federal regulations, Volume 16, Sections 255 and 436, which states; "a product or service must be exchanged for money received." The simple note in the letter, "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST", makes it legal because you are paying for exchange of a service, (adding the purchasers name to his mailing list) for a $1.00 fee. IMPORTANT: Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again, and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions. Look at it this way. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will come your way. NOTE: You may want to retain every name and address sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service. (Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the $1 bill in dark paper to reduce the risk of mail theft.) So, as each post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed, six members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with one dollar each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so that when your name reaches the #1 position you will be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an opportunity for only $6.00 ($1.00 for each of the first six people listed above) Send it now, add your own name to the list and you're in business! =============================================== -->DIRECTIONS FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS<-- Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply put your mouse cursor at the beginning of this letter, click and drag your cursor to the bottom of this document, right click and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computer's memory. Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your mouse cursor at the top of the blank page. Right click and from the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can add your name and postal address to the list. Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your postings in different settings, you'll always have this file to go back to. Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.) Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the "post" message button. You're done with your first one! Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about a minute for each newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That's it! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.** ======================================= *Now the WHY part; Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a very low example). So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5 replies each, I will make an additional $626.00! OK, now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still ONLY 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive $15,625,00! With an original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining the internet and reading these articles everyday?, JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so... People have said, "what if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that happening when there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual internet!!! REMEMBER, PLAY FAIRLY AND HONESTLY AND THIS WILL WORK FOR YOU!!! GOOD LUCK to all and please play fairly and reap the huge rewards from this, which is tons of extra CASH. By the way, please DON'T try to deceive people by posting the messages with your name in the list and not sending the CASH to the rest of the people already on the list, you will NOT get any. This is the fairest and most honest way I have ever seen to share the wealth of the world without costing anything but our time!!! You also may want to buy mailing and e-mail lists for future cash. Make sure you print this article out RIGHT NOW! Also, try to keep a list of everyone that sends you CASH and always keep an eye on the newsgroups to make sure everyone is playing fairly. Remember, HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY. IMPORTANT: If you're not interested to my article, (don't want instant cash?), please pass this message to anyone who wishes quick money. Thank you so much. =======================================
