  • A Few of My Favorite Romantic Pairings

Love stories always fascinate us. Too many people hear about have the fairy tale happy ending or tragic losses. I picked some romances that had a bit of both. Not all love stories end in marriage and family forever, but the passion within some of them are noteworthy. One is fictional but enduring through the ages, three are royal and one is fierce loyalty that I don’t think gets noticed (it was even cut out of the major motion picture! I know, I have the DVD set. Heehee!)

Queen Victoria & Prince Albert: My heart breaks over this. They loved each other so much and when she was widowed at such a young age, she mourned him for the rest of her life and dedicated memorials to him all over Britain. That’s love you don’t see very often. In a time when arranged marriages or status matches were common, theirs was a bond you wished to have. Victoria was literally broken when he died and it took her years to come back, though I don’t think she fully recovered.

Henry VIII & Anne Boleyn: Okay…well….it didn’t end on a good note, but he literally turned the world upside down for this woman at the peak of their relationship. He killed, changed religions, changed his then- only child's status, went against his own people. People can't seem to decide if Anne manipulated him because he was so desperate for a son or if he really loved her. It depends on which version you follow. I think it was love at some point; otherwise, why cause so much trouble that it's still affecting the Monarchy to this day? Nowadays you’re lucky to find a guy who will agree to go shopping with you without complaining the whole time. (And yes, I'm a Tudors fan if you can't tell by the picture)

Romeo & Juliet: They literally couldn’t live without each other. Not bad for a couple who knew each other less than a week. And they did put a stop to their families' endless fighting.

Isador & Ida Straus: In case you don’t know, Isador was the founder and owner of Macy’s before he and his wife, Ida, died on the Titanic. The reason why I put them on my list is because when the women and children were being evacuated, she refused to leave him. Many other women did the same, too. They met their tragic end together. It’s so sad but sweet…Ida said, “We have been living together for many years. Where you go, I go”. I unfortunately couldn't find a picture of them that I could post on the blog! I'm so mad..

Prince Edward & Wallis Warfield: This man gave up control of a SUPER POWER for this woman. I personally think they should have just let him marry her. It’s not like she had power or anything (except over her prince’s heart!). They claimed they wouldn’t last, yet they were married for over 30 years. Many people put the blame on Wallis, saying she made him give up his birthright, but I think that’s unfair. At the time, Britain controlled a majority of the world - millions, if not billions of people - why give it up for ONE if it wasn’t really love?

Who are your favorite romantic pairings? Why do you think they deserve notice?

I think the main pattern in all these couples is sacrifice.

  • msarianne@xanga

Gu Jun Pyo & Jan Di.

waait. no. Ga Eul & So Yi Jung ;D

AHAHAHAH. lmao. i'm done. all of em in my asian dramas/movies. sure, they may be fictional, but its okay. i'd like to think that romances like those are highly realistic in their own way. that is what has inspired my own ambition to find a handsome young man that is hopefuly the son of a CEO that is an absolute cocky jerk tht i will fall in love with one day.

why do i think they deserve to be noticed? despite the constant "i hate you, but i learn to love you" theme - i loove them anyways. true love at its finest - these characters often begin with hating one another and arguing and everything. and throughout the series, they learn to love each other, accepting one another's flaws, or perhaps bettering one another. many of the dramas/movies are so innocent and pure and learning about sacrifice. i love it.

    -_____________-. okay. i'm done.

Today was Victoria Day in Canada, a holiday honouring the queen. Its timing is similar to the States' Memorial Day holiday weekend - the first long weekend of the summer. Lots of fireworks go off tonight too. At least in Ontario.

The thing about Queen Victoria.. she was a very successful figure of her time because of society's progress at the turn of the century (Industrial Revolution etc), but in terms of husband, Prince Albert was her first cousin. Perhaps certain ethics have changed since them... but love is love...

As a diehard Simpsons fan, I have to cast my vote in for Homer and Marge Simpson. He has done so much - even managed to put the city of Springfield in jeopardy by locking the town in a giant dome - and yet, she always stands by her Homie. Besides, he's done some really stupid things that if anyone attempted to do them, they'd be long gone.

Oh wait, we're talking about real people here... d'oh.

Burt and Ernie. Larrel and Hardy. Abbot and Costello.

  • Bumhee@xanga

    Biblical pairings...

    Boaz & Ruth

    David & Abigail

Both couples' stories are like fairytales in Biblical times of finding that special someone who truly belongs to you... I read the Bible stories so many times and I'm always hopeful.

@Meowmeowkimmaee@xanga - It is. I was thinking that when I was making the list. Some sacrificed their lives, their livelihoods, alot of things. I could have went on forever but then my list would be a novel. LOL. I guess the main point is that in love you cant be selfish & the people on my list gave up a great deal of things.

@msarianne@xanga - I agree with you there. It's nice to see love & romance that isnt overly sexy or over the top. I think that's why the dramas are so popular.

If I had to pick from Asian Dramas I would pick Kang Joon Sang & Jung Yujin from Winter Sonata (I hope I spelled their names right!! I havent seen it in years. =( AZN Tv went off the air) & Qi Yue & Jiang Meng from Devil Beside You. I watch too many dramas. I think everyone & their mother knows Winter Sonata by now though. Wasnt it like one of, if not THE, successful K-Dramas ever?

@stardust81@xanga - True True. She was so popular infact that when she died, I read people refused to put up the notice because she reigned so for long it spanned generations. It's kind of like with Queen Elizabeth now. I dont think people will believe it either. Did you see The Young Victoria yet? I was playing the trailer when I was writing their part on the list. I wanna see that movie so bad, especially since I havent seen anything on Victoria in terms of movies.

@andromediva@xanga - XD well I listed a fictional couple so Homer & Marge can stand. I forget which episode it was called but do you remember the one where Marge & Moe went into business & Moe started to love Marge & was planning on like seducing her or something on a "business trip" & Homer got on the plane just in time. It's been so long but that episode was hilarious.

@tvols11@xanga - I thought of that too but I thought it may have been to similar to Romeo & Juliet so I just left that pair in. Tristian & Isole are still awesome though! I love the movie!

@trickery19@xanga - I was surprised to hear they split up too! I live in the States so I dont see their show but I read about them & they seemed like such a solid couple. Wow...

@Bumhee@xanga - That's cool! I'm trying to stay hopeful too. Sadly most of the men I love are in books

wow, the one about isador and ida is tragic, but romantic.

  • MuggleLouise@xanga

Romeo always bothered me, even in high school when we were reading the story. He was so fickle with his affections. One minute it's Rosalin, the next he wants to marry Juliette. Had they lived, I am sure he would have wandered across someone else's path and ended up doing something rash (a la Scott Peterson) in order to be with her.

  • methodElevated@xanga

Ekaterina (Catherine) I Alexeyevna and Peter the Great.

  • FIREExATxWILL@xanga

I don't think Romeo and Juliet should be on this list. It wasn't love, it was infatuation of two young silly kids.

  • jzrocker@xanga

    I like this post <3

although I agree some real people should be substituted for Romeo and Juliet. Too hackneyed.

  • msarianne@xanga

@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - ahah wow. i'm actually watching winter sonata right now. episode 5. so i shall wait and see x].

  • ballerinasandsonnets@xanga

Ah! You put Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII in there!
I have an obsession with them. :P
    But great post!

  • UnopenedSuitcases@xanga

i dont agree with romeo and juliet. how can they be so in love and what not when they've met and known each other less than a week? They know nothing of each other's likes and dislikes

  • TheL0ki@xanga

I wrote my history thesis in college on Anne Boleyn's role in England's break from Rome. She fascinates me completely. A commoner so charismatic and charming that a King was willing to plunge his country into centuries of turmoil to get close to her. Epic! And Natalie Dormer plays such an awesome Anne Boleyn in The Tudors. I'm not a fan of that show, but she's perfect. You could totally believe why Henry would do what he did for her!

Have you seen the recent "Young Victoria"? I loved it. Ridiculously adorable. And Romeo and Juliet is one of my favourite works of all time.

    GREAT list! ;D

  • MakinzyKrysteen@xanga

I'm totally reading The Other Boleyn Girl right now... Anne Boleyn fascinates me!
