  • Doing Laundry Is The Ultimate Cheap Date

    Suds. Water. Fabric softener.

    Ohhhhh yeaaaaaah.

It started out as necessity - my ex and I were in marching band together and would sweat through an average of ten shirts each a week - and turned into something I'd never expect. I remember saying, "I can't come over...I have to do laundry!" and he was, like, "I should really do it too..."

So my ex and I began Laundry Dating almost every week, and it was surprisingly a great date each time we dragged our Tupperware bins of dirty socks (yum) out to the laundromat. Laundry is great because there's significant downtime while you're waiting for loads to finish, so you can hang out or do homework or sit around talking. Ex and I used to do crossword puzzles together while we waited (we were dorks) and we'd take turns seeing how many minutes were left on the machines.

It's also a good way to learn something about each other. Who knew that he had so many pairs of blue boxers? Now you do. And, to be honest, once you've helped someone fold his gross t-shirts and socks, it breaks down potential uncomfortable barriers. You've helped him match socks and taught him how you're not supposed to stick bras in the dryer. It's this massively unsexy - and yet, effective! - way of being intimate.

Last, I taught my ex how to fold t-shirts so they would lay completely flat and wouldn't wrinkle; he showed me the best way to pair socks and keep them together without stretching out the elastic on the top.

Have you done laundry with an SO before? What are other unconventional cheap dates you've stumbled upon?
