Yesss, ED Commercials May Be Banned
via NY Daily News:Two Democratic congressmen, James Moran of Virginia and Robert Brady of Pennsylvania, have introduced legislation that would prohibit broadcast television or radio from carrying ads for erectile dysfunction products before 10 p.m.
Moran, who introduced and then withdrew a similar resolution in 2005, tells CNN that too many TV viewers who see "Viva Viagra" or Cialis ads during daytime sporting events are tired of having a 4-year-old grandchild ask what erectile dysfunction is.
This would be BEYOND WONDERFUL. I've had more uncomfortable moments based on those stupid commercials...the whistled song for Cialis is catchy and I've caught the 8-year-old I babysit whistling it long after the commercial's over. She hasn't asked me flat-out what erectile dysfunction is, but if you asked her if she recognized the words Viagra and Cialis, I'm sure she'd say yes.
It's also always weird sitting at home with your dad and having Viagra ads blasted in front of both of you. I would loooooooove for these to be blocked until 10 p.m.
It also has to be uncomfortable for anyone who's actually on the drug, right? I don't think there's any brand pride there for regular Viagra users. "HEY! I TAKE THAT!"
Have you been caught in an awkward moment when these commercials have been on TV? Who were you with and what happened?

I just find it obnoxious more than anything. Not really embarressing though.
Banning something just because it makes you feel awkward is retarded. There's nothing wrong with the ads; and they provide promotion for products some people need. Grow up.
Finally! The ones on the radio are the WORST! It's SO awkward when you're sitting in the car... with your parents and an ad for "HERO TABS" comes on the radio ...
*cringes
I don't get the big deal. Probably b/c I don't live w/little ones?? Idk. **shrugs**
These commercials don't really bother me much. I just find them a bit annoying sometimes.
haha awww those commercials are hilarious!! I always get a chuckle from that guys HUGE smile hahaha.
I think they should just stop saying its for erectile disfunction.. I mean, everyone knows what Cialis and Viagra is, they don't really need to explain that fact.
@Schristian@xanga - Agreed.
The ED commercials aren't so bad; they at least advertise something that has a use...the ones I wish I didn't have to see at all are the Girls Gone Wild ones...those scream awkward momemts! Friends, family, it's so, so, so awkward! And there is no need to advertise it...any guy (or girl) that wants to see college girls flippin' out the goods doesn't need a commerical to catch their attention and remind them such a product exists. They know where to get it.
If they banned them because they were annoying, then I`d applaud. But I think they're banning them because it has something to do with PENISES, OMG, PENISES, GOOD CHRISTIAN AMERICANS CANNOT HANDLE PENISESSSSSSSSS BECAUSE THEY LEAD TO SINNNNNN!!!!!!! AND INDECENCY, AND POSSIBLY EVEN SEX, WHICH OF COURSE IS WRONG!
I personally think they're banning the ads because they promote a healthy sex-life, which of course, just HAS to be taboo.
Or something like that. Which I completely disagree with, of course, despite the fact that the ads are insufferably stupid. It's just blind censorship on behalf of tightassed conservatives somewhere. *shrug*
Oh, and: PENISES. That is all.
Hm. I agree with both sides.
Those commercials are beyond annoying (as evidenced by my house-mate screaming "I don't want to hear about your penis anymore!" at the tv when they come on), but really...if they're blocking the commercials because conservative people can't handle it or because it makes you feel awkward...well, that's just silly.
At least the creepy vacuum systems to help ED don't advertise til after 10. Those just... ech. Awkward.
I've never been bothered by them.
I mean, I just don't think it's appropriate to put those kinds of ads on television when, say, family shows are on.
It is a medical condition and all, and ED is a serious condition, but really, children don't need to know about it.
If they block ED commercials I want them to block birth control and tampon commercials as well, just because I don't like them and find them annoying.
^^ See how stupid that sounds?
it's a medical condition. get over it, prudes.
Thank god. I'm tired of my dad reminding me over and over that he has nothing in common with Bob. Ewwwww.
10:00 for who? Mountain Time? Central Time? Eastern Time?
10:00 Eastern time is 8:00 Mountain time and even earlier than that for West Coasters.... early enough for kiddos to still be watching TV
I think it's a dumb idea.
@nimbusthedragon@xanga - tight ass conservatives? ummm it's the liberals who are pushing this... just a little FYI.... blame the right people, k?
@nimbusthedragon@xanga - hmmm ... on behalf of tightassed conservatives somewhere? I have trouble believing that since it's being introduced by two democratic congressmen.
And while conservatives would probably appreciate the legislation, I believe it's been a long time since democrats have pandered much to conservatives .. especially in this day in age. I'm sure they're working on behalf of someone else.
@fatal_mess@xanga - 10pm in each timezone. duh.
@Pcgecko85@xanga - TV is the same in every time zone.
take American Idol for example. American Idol airs on Tuesday nights at 7:00 Central Time, 6:00 Mountain time, with the same commercials
or the Superbowl. The Superbowl Airs LIVE at 4:00 Mountain time but 5:00 Central Time..... with the same commercials.
duh.
@fatal_mess@xanga - those are live shows. duh.
it's still the same whether it's live or not. The Office? The O'Reilly Factor? Friends? Do you not notice when they tell you the time of a show it says 8pm/7 Central? Duh.
when i was ten years old, i asked my mom what ED meant.... that would be the awkward moment ^.^"
I don't care about those, but I really wish they would start blocking the "Extenze" ads altogether. That company has been fined before for a whole slew of different things (it's false advertising for a completely ineffectual product), and the ads truly are cringe-worthy.
If anything, the commercials are kind of annoying. I don't watch a lot of TV so I haven't really been in an awkward situation. I would just get up and grab something to eat during the commercial.
I was watching a baseball game with my dad and little sister, and behind the batter was a big SPONSORED BY VIAGRA sign. My sister, then 7th or 8th grade, asked my dad, "What's Viagra?" My dad was explaining to her right as my mother walked into the living room from the kitchen.
