  • He Was Young, He Needed The Money...

    via post-gazette.com:

A student is appealing his suspension from a Christian college in Mercer County for appearing in gay porn videos using a pseudonym.

Twenty-two-year-old John Gechter, of Philadelphia, was suspended for one year pending appeal from Grove City College after a student saw him last month in a video posted online.

Mr. Gechter is appealing the suspension and says he may sue, claiming that the gay porn job isn't any of the school's business, especially since he performed using the name "Vincent DeSalvo." Mr. Gechter says he used his porn income to pay for his schooling.

School officials say Mr. Gechter is suspended because he was well aware his porn involvement "exhibited behavior contrary to the values" of the school about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh.

I'm not sure about the policies there, but at other Christian colleges like the ones my friends attended, John's choice would have gotten him completely expelled. The rules are strict, but it's not like they hide them from you - going in, you know what you're getting into.

That being said, with the high price of school and jobs not being readily available, would you ever consider doing what John did to pay off your loans?

Also, if you were the administrators at his school, what would you do in this situation?

I wouldn't consider doing what the guy did, but I would understand it. If I were the administrator, I would've let him do it. It's none of the school's business what he does.

  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

my first thought was that this is none of the school's business. however, it is a private institution and thus able to make whatever rules it sees fit. it doesn't hide these rules, and agreeing to attend that university means acquiescing to its code of conduct.

shoulda gone to public school. it's cheaper, too.

  • Viserys@xanga

Was the student looking at gay porn suspended, too? ;o

  • astudyinemerald@xanga

From a legal standpoint I suppose the school was well within it's limits, but I still think it's absolutely ridiculous--excluding violent crimes what someone does on their own time really shouldn't be any of the school's business.

Can't say I've ever considered porn an employment option, but I don't judge John for his choice, either.

no, that is weird, I just apply for financial aid.

@Viserys@xanga - Good question.  By all fairness, he should be! :P

I could never get away with attending a Christian school.  Too many things I've done wrong.

1.) Not a virgin.  Strike one.

2.) If the right woman came along, I might still consider sex outside of marriage.  So, a non-repentant fornicator.  Strike two.

3.) I don't attend church often.  Strike three.

4.) I don't want to attend church often.  Strike four.

5.) I tend to disagree with many Christian 'norms.'  Strike five.

Wait...I was already out on strike 3, for sure. :P

It's easy to judge that guy when you aren't struggling to pay for school. I know first hand financial aid doesn't always cover everything and scholarships are often paid directly to the school...leaving you to figure out how hold down a job and still have time to study. I can see why he'd choose porn but It's still not something I'd ever consider doing. You can't exactly hide that sort of thing and this guy is a prime example of that. I think the school is just enforcing their policies and considering it's a religious school he is very lucky he wasn't kicked out.

  • thats_not_my_name@xanga

@Viserys@xanga - I always wonder about the person who reports this sort of thing too. Theres no way they just happened upon that video. Whoever reported it should be suspended also.

maybe every state is different and since he is going to a private religious school, then it also differs. when I applied, the tuition was paid directly to my college and I even received a check, which was more than enough to cover for school supplies/expensive textbooks. I even splurged some of the money on non-school things. porn is a desperate fast cash route. I wouldn't do it though. his choice doesn't seem like a wise one but I still give him props for being that serious about college that he'll literally do anything to pay his way through it.

  • sweetsweetsugarjunkie@xanga

Well if that school's tuition is anything like the tuition of the religious university here in my area, I totally understand why he'd have to go to such lengths.

A harsh reality of adult life is that if you sign on the dotted line for a job or school or whatever you are bound by the rules you sign on for. Private colleges just like private businesses have a right to set rules of behavior. If you don't agree with those rules you should not sign up for them. No matter how stupid the rules may seem they are the rules. If you agreed to them you should follow them.

  • Lordv16@xanga

He did what he had to do. Hell, if someone wanted to pay my 80,000 college tuition, I'd almost think about it.

But, echois does make a good point. Similar to the Ohio christian prom story that's going around.

  • Pcgecko85@xanga

His first mistake was going to a private christian college.  What a waste of money.

  • pillowpixies@xanga

    1. Why was that student watching gay porn? What do they have to say about THAT?

    2. Why should it matter what he does outside of school? He's paying them so he can attend their school. They're getting money. End of story.

    3. I highly doubt the school rules say, "Remain out of pornographic content, straight or otherwise."

If I had been the administrator I would have asked why the student (the one who found his classmate in a porno) felt the need to report it to the school.

If I were in need of money to pay loans or debts, I would not consider that avenue, no.

  • quicksandbuddy@xanga

There had to be better means available. You rarely ever HAVE to do something. Also, outside of financial need, this will be a huge embarrassment for him. On a personal level, I'd say this was a very unwise choice.

  • msnatalie27@xanga

@Viserys@xanga - hahaha good point, seriously.

Well, obviously I do not agree ethically about it but legally I think the school has the right, especially if they were not searching out this information. It is a private institution and, as a catholic one (or so I've been told by my friends who attend catholic universities), I'm sure the rules a clear and make sense within the religion. Ultimately it is there choice on the matter and that is how it goes if you pursue a private education as a catholic college.

  • anonymous

The problem is the school he chose.  If you go to a school like that, you have to expect to be held to certain standards that non-religious institutions wouldn't impose.  If that's how he was planning to pay for his schooling, he should've gone to a different school.  If he was already in school when he made this decision, he made a very poor decision.  As much as I hate to say it, the school's right.  They're a private, Christian institution.  They have every right to suspend him for publicly doing things that would discredit the school's reputation.  In a public school, this would not be an issue.  Even a private, non-religious school wouldn't see the big deal.  The combination of decisions he made was just poor.

  • TimeToForget@xanga

It really isn't anyone else's business what he does to make his money.  He is an adult, leading his own life...which cannot be controlled by school administrators, as much as they like to think that.

  • yourblondeness@xanga

More like that's what he gets for going to a private christian college. There are some in my state that are so strict that they have such rules as:
    No dancing
No people of opposite gender in dorm rooms, except at certain times on certain days, and not later than 9 pm. This even applies to relatives.
There are so many. I would never go to one.

I'm surprised he only got suspended.

That's one issue I have about going to a Christian school. Although I can't say it would be that bad, I'd rather not be in an environment like that. I would probably fit perfectly in that school given that I'm a Christian and don't do a lot of "questionable" things, but the environment would feel too sheltered for me.

Anyway, I would never do anything like starring in porn or stripping to make money.
