  • Nitpicky Things That Are Complete Turnoffs

    Miss Reindeer

So as you know I've been talking to this guy, H.  I like a lot of things about him, but there's one thing that is irking me a little bit.  He's a horrific speller.  I know that's really stupid and it is by no means a dealbreaker, but it still makes me cringe every once in awhile.

He's pretty big on the texting and I know all about the acronyms and abbreviations.  But when "parranoyed" came my way, I could only shake my head.  He's not well-versed on "there," they're" or "their" either.  And I get a lot of "your" when he means "you're".  As an English grad and writer, I always want to correct him.  I refrain from doing this, though, because surely he'll think I'm a big weirdo...which maybe I kind of am?  This makes me feel like Jerry in Seinfeld when he was breaking up with a girl because she ate her peas one by one.  I mean I'm going to keep seeing him, but if I'm being honest, the poor spelling and grammar is a turn-off.

What was the most annoying yet trivial thing about someone you were dating? I'm curious to hear what kind of mild pet peeves you all have.

constant biting of nails, or leg shaking.

  • XactiLucius@xanga

I completely understand your pain, mine was probably the baby talk voice. Omg I hated that.

  • rough_souls@xanga

i hate it when people use poor grammar or spell a lot of things wrong... my ex used to text me and say 'wut' instead of 'what' and for some reason it really pisses me off. 'their' 'they're' and 'there' is a real turnoff... it reflects your intelligence too and if you consistently do it wrong it's definitely a turnoff.

Whenever I think I can't spell things right, I google the word - Just to make sure that I have it right, or to check and see if I don't. I'm not necessarily a spelling perfectionist, but if I make a general mistake it drives me insane.

I can't actually think of any relationship peeves.. Though, if someone were to know me for a month, date me for only a week, and then tell me they loved me - I'd consider shooting them.

  • a_single_raindrop@xanga

Yeah, bad spelling makes me mad, too. I correct my friends and they just roll their eyes and continue to spell it wrong to annoy me.

I am completely with you. I absolutely cannot stand people who can't spell. And yeah, everyone makes typos, but those are accidents and should occur only once in a while. But if you're a terrible speller, you should take the time to check your spelling. It's not a crime to be bad at spelling, but it is a crime to not do something about it.

Oh, that's really annoying for me too... Even though I use them too, but only "lol/lmao/rofl, "brb/ttyl", and "ikr".

Bad spelling is pretty horrible. It's up there on the list, for sure. Bad sense of direction is probably my biggest pet peeve. Girls that get lost all the time, or have to receive directions in "right" and "left" exclusively instead of cardinal directions are insufferable. "Turn left at the big blue sign and then right at the gazebo, it's the blue house at the end..." makes me want to stab someone. There are street names and house numbers for a reason... !!!!!

See what abbreviations do now? People refuse to really spell out words bigger than the common. You are better off teaching him all over again. Or use an agonizingly titanic lexicon just to give him the message.

  • DisasterTwins@xanga

You're not a huge weirdo. Trust me, I'm the same way about spelling. The whole reason I changed to Firefox was because of the spell checker. I dated a guy named Jeff who couldn't manage to spell anything correctly through texts, and it killed me. To the point where I'd avoid sending texts to him just so I wouldn't have to read the ones he'd send in return. And the 'there, they're, their and the your and you're' issues, ugh. Just have a friend send you a badly spelled text while you're with him and mention that the poor spelling annoyed you.

Bad spelling is the number one clue to someone who isn't as intelligent as they seem. It matters. :D

Spelling really annoys me too. My fiance tends to text me things like "Im boared". Or.. "How are you sweatie?" I don't think he thinks I'm sweaty. So I would assume that was supposed to be sweetie. He's not a stupid guy though, he does very well in all his classes and I have a problem of over correcting people to the point where they can't spend time with me anymore, so I avoid it at all costs! My mothers an english teacher though, and I was constantly corrected. So this is SO annoying for me! I love him though, I guess I'll be the one teaching the kids to read!

ROFL, my first BF was like that and it drove my mom INSANE. It was annoying to me, but we got around it. It even made some hilarious inside jokes between us as well.

  • nosillassim@xanga

bad spelling gets me! but the leg-shaking stuff is annoying too. and chewing nails.

It does sound somewhat trivial, but I wouldn't be able to tolerate a bad speller either. I always think that, if there's one thing about a person that really bothers me, chances are there are several other things behind it which I have not yet discovered.

And I can't STAND it when people confuse they're/their/there! I've done it unconsciously once in a blue moon (and was quick to correct it), but there are some who make the mistake ALL the time.

  • Super___Connected@xanga

It's okay. That's a huge turn off for me, the spelling thing. It wouldn't stop me from dating somebody, but I don't think I could be in a long term thing with somebody like that. Intelligence is too important to me. And I know it's a really small scale of intelligence, but spelling and grammar make it or break it for me.

On the reverse side, I'll actually reply to a facebook message of  "You're beautiful" and not "Your beautiful". In the latter, I reply back, "My beautiful what?"

    English turds unite!

  • mybustedbus@xanga

She bite her fingernails...hahaha it used to drive me crazy, but it's gotten to the point I just poke fun at her...

  • Rebekah1234@xanga

My fiance is the same way, his spelling is the worst thing, it doesn't really bother me, but the things is he can't spell my name right. He is slowly getting better, but still bugs me.

  • scrapbook_romance

I hate bad spelling, but what really bugged me in one of my past relationships was stuff like:
    Me: Wow, this is confusing.
    Him: Your face is confusing!!

    Yea, that's not cute.

  • C0ll33Ncorps@xanga

People that talk with their mouth full gross me out.

  • lapis_lazuli917@xanga

    ERRRR bad spelling.

Eating sounds(swallowing, chewing, gulping, lip smacking) freak me out like no one understands D:

  • imyourstargirl@xanga

That rendition of paranoid was just awful. And the SO loves slapping his hands against a desk - or any hard surface - but I usually tell him to quit it just so I can hold his hands. (:
I cannot stand it when boys - or people, in general - go out of their way to sound ridiculously illiterate in texts.
Like, "Hehe and omg man miley cyrus is eeewwww!!!!!! Ugh I h8 her!!!!!"
    So freaking annoying.
And I don't like Douchebag Personality Disorder, either.

hmm I totally agree, although there are only 2 things my boyfriend does in the grammar department that really bug me. I mean yeah he does sometimes mix up his "there", "they're" and "their"s but that doesn't bother me as much as how he uses "then" rather than "than". As in "I love you more THEN anything in the world." UGH. He also always spells "definitely" like "definately". Just...kinda annoying, but I haven't corrected him, don't wanna seem like a bitch haha
