  • If You Like Pina Coladas And Believing In Fate...

So my best friend Blaine and I were debating last night. We have some overlapping musical interests, but tend to go completely separate ways with what we listen to frequently (he likes metal while I like top 40 stuff). There is one song we completely disagree on: Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes (you know, "if you like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain...").

For those of you who do not know, the song is about a married couple and how the husband is tired of his wife, so he starts reading the personal column in the paper. He responds to an ad, meets up with the woman from the ad and it turns out the woman is his wife. They end up together in the end. (YAY!)

    His Argument:
They are trying to cheat on each other! That is not okay and the only reason it doesn't happen is because they get stuck back together by accident. What happens six months from then, when they get bored of each other again?

    My Argument:
Ever stop to think that subconsciously, he knew it was her? That maybe some innate part of him just KNEW? Plus, the fact that they end up back together is kismet.

What side of this do you see more? Do you believe in fate?

I think it's rather sweet, but I don't necessarily like the part that they tried to cheat, be it with each other or not.

  • shetakesphotos@xanga

I believe in that everything happens for a reason. But I don't know if I believe in fate.

  • Silly_Padawan@xanga

I think the point of the song is they are rediscovering each other.  They both were looking for something new because their relationship has been in a rut.  They're simply discovering another level of connection between them and when he answers the personal ad he finds someone he didn't know as well as he thought.

    I think its fantastic.

  • chPanda@xanga

I'm on his side...She was bored with him so she put herself in a personal ad.  Why didn't she just break up with him instead of going behind his back.  lol this reminds me of girls who hold on to their man until they find somebody better!

  • Lynnjynh9315@xanga

I'm sorry to say: but you're friend is right. You'd have to be in denial to say that they were not trying to cheat! The whole argument that he subconsciously knew it was really her is steaming pile of....

  • Romans_837@xanga

    1.  It's a song.  Don't try to read too much into it.
    2.  If it happened in real life...the first response would be a bunch of WTF's.  If they were smart, they'd then go to counseling.
    3.  I do not believe in fate.

But it is a sweet song...sort of.  Catchy tune.

I would agree with his side, he and she were trying to cheat on each other. Instead of trying to cheat on each other, why couldn't they sit down and talk to each other to try to spice up their own love life?

  • buddy71@xanga

were they trying to "cheat"? and was it fate that each put in what the other needed to see? and if so, did they know deep down this was who this person was all a long since that is who they married to begin with.

i think i will stick with the romantic way of thinking since i am a hopeful romantic.    and not dwell on the negative side.

  • RONALYNEdotPi@xanga

aw that's cute. ..i gotta look for the song.. asap

  • Eternal_Nocturne@xanga

I support Blaine's argument. The song makes it sound like fate had a hand in it all, but it's really Glurge when you think about it. When you sit down and allow your brain to process what just happened; They WERE trying to cheat on each other; indicating that the relationship is damaged to begin with. Odds are, this made them happier because they found/remembered why they stayed with this person in the first place. In the real world, if the guy hadn't found that it was his wife, he would've been caught, and chewed out by his wife.

I absolutely refuse to believe in god or fate. I hate that bullshit ideology where what I want to do in my life is restricted, or in the "hands" of anybody else other than myself. I work hard to get what I want to get done, or I don't work hard enough and fail to reap the rewards because I haven't done everything. 95% of the events of the world are really cause and effect to me, so I disbelieve in outside forces, blaming myself for something that went wrong because odds are, it probably was.

  • jeezshoua@xanga

    I agreed with him.

But I love Pina Coladas.  Yum.

  • CaucasianChopstix@xanga

This argument is typical of how men and women view relationships. Men tend to see relationships in a more logical sense, while women are far more emotional and dreamy.  Of course he's going to make more sense; it's more realistic and makes more sense that way.

  • happyobligations@xanga

    Um...I think it's just a song. Haha

  • RazorBladeParade@xanga

They were trying to cheat on each other.

Fate is a suckers game best played when you'd like to ditch responsibility for your own actions.

  • tequila_sky@xanga

I love it and think they are meant t be together and that yeah they are bored, but somehow realize they are really well matched, they just needed to rediscover their love for each other. I love that song :) Makes me smile.

  • lolquack@xanga

    I agree with Blaine.
    lol.

    Pina Coladas!

  • angular_achievement@xanga

    idk, thats kina messed up

yea thats funny how it was each other

so it could work. or it could not..

  • ThatSady_MittGurl@xanga

It's wrong to try and cheat... but they both did it so they're even.  Maybe they just needed something to remind them why they loved each other again.  They probably just got busy with their lives and forgot why they fell in love in the first place.

  • spanz@xanga
  • LifeStar1622@xanga

I think it's kind of cute. Not the cheating part but the irony that they meet up together in the end.

It's kind of like that Hinder song where he was talking to his ex on the phone. For some reason a lot of girls loved that song.

  • blufrogz37@xanga
    Where've you been?

People like adventure and excitement. They might have sides they don't show all the time, might even have forgotten the chase once the couple has settled in during a longtime relationship.

That's what the song is really about...finding the romance again...that's the point of the Pina Colada song.

    Word.

  • YOUwereALMOSTkindX@xanga

I agree with your side but I see where your friend is coming from. Yes he got sick of her and went looking for a new woman but it's kinda cute because his wife is exactly what he was looking for all along!

maybe im just a hopeless romantic.
but i definitely agree with you.
fate does exist. anyone who denies
that is crazy, but what people
have to get is that we play a roll in
    deciding our fate
    . its a sweet
song and i think that it was intended
to point out that sometimes, two
people are just MEANT to be together
    ,
whether they think so or not. so
yeah, they were going to 'cheat' on
each other. but the fact that fate
intervened just shows that they are together
    for a REASON
    . i mean, come onn.
i know its just a song, but theres a very
    powerful message about love there.

I mean, do you think its a coincidence
that he found his wife? he must
have been looking for someone like her!
which shows that he DOES lovee
who she is. and he figures that out. :D

    la canciĂ³n es muy romĂ¡ntica
((the song is very romanticc)) <3

so obviously im on your side :)

  • inspireothers@xanga

    im in the middle.
his side because well they planned to cheat on each other, despite whether or not they know each other or not. what if both partners end up with someone else.. then what?

your side because i believe in fate and destiny. oh so very much.
