In a unanimous decision, Iowa's Supreme Court ruled that the state cannot prohibit same-sex couples from seeking marriage licenses. "On our review, we hold the Iowa marriage statute violates the equal protection clause of the Iowa Constitution," the court held. "A statute inconsistent with the Iowa Constitution must be declared void, even though it may be supported by strong and deep-seated traditional beliefs and popular opinion." How long do you think it'll be before every state allows same-sex marriage? Will it ever happen?

Yes! this is definitely good news :)
It won't be for a long time before every state will allow same sex marriages. I'm glad that Iowa recognizes that to not allow it would violate equal rights. The Californians for Prop 8 need to open their eyes and realize that they are not the ones in charge of running other people's live. The Bible is also not an acceptable source to ban same sex marriage as well.
wenni wuzz kid i cudnt possibly imagin gay marrij i still cant howevr if str8 pepul ar allowd to marry why shudnt all pepul be allowd to marry tho i wud prefer the praktis of marrij be removed frum the staytes interference
this makes me extremely excited. im surprised it was iowa though. it will be a long time before the whole country opens its eyes. but i hope that i get to live to see the day.
GO IOWA!!!
=D I'm so glad to hear this!!!!
Hopefully other states follow suit soon, but we still have a lot of backwater legislations all over the country, so I have no idea how long it will take. How long did civil rights and women's right take to go through completely? I would imagine that it would take about the same amount of time...
I am so excited about this! :D
But the question: Will every state ever allow this?
I don't think so. :\
But hey! We can all go to Iowa and get married now! :D
Hopefully it'll be within the next fifty years.. Let's just hope this doesn't get overturned too.
I like to think it will happen eventually, but for every state to deem it acceptable it will definitely take a while.
yay! hopefully the other states will follow :)
Yay!!! I literally clapped for Iowa.
It's in the near future! YAYYY! :)
Things are beginning to fall into place. I think some states are certainly easier to convince of this than others. I'm thinking for the entire country it could take 10+ years. (And that's being optimistic)
Horray for Iowa!
I hope so, but it'll take 50 years probably.
Glad they recognize this is a CIVIL RIGHTS issues and not a MORAL/RELIGIOUS issue.
No matter where you stand on homosexuality, an American citizen is an American citizen.
embarrassing that cali got beaten by iowa...but regardless, i'm really happy to hear it!
This is groundbreaking, I really hope this catches on because everyone deserves a chance to be happy. Mixed said it perfectly, its a civil rights and not a moral religious issue
This excites me deeply :]
Great job, Iowa.
I don't think the way it will proceed will be every state will do the same but somewhere down the line this may become a national issue like abortion, no longer a state issue.
This is just another step forward. I'm very excited over this news. :]
YaY! Iowa isn't so bad in my book anymore..though I'm still not a fan of the scenery.
yes eventually every state will have gay marriage allowed... I'm pretty sure at least lol.
and Iowa is our neighbor (Nebraska)... so maybe... will Nebraska have this soon? hmm.
Yay, it's about time!
I think it's awesome. I hope other states catch on soon.
I doubt that all states would allow it, although maybe eventually --- I'd vote against allowing it in my state.
Well, it looks like they're just talking about marriage licenses here, which is a governmental thing. I can't see why anyone would have a problem with that. It doesn't say anything about forcing churches to marry people whose lifestyles they don't approve of. And you don't have to get married in a church these days anyway...
I think every state will eventually allow it, but I have no idea how long it will take. As a Canadian, I can't really see what all the fuss is about. We've had legal gay marriage for years and it hasn't adversely affected straight people (except the ones who always have their panties in a knot and a stick up their ass, but there's no pleasing them anyway).
This is a step in the right direction.
