I'm interested in this guy I just met this past weekend. We just connected - we have a lot in common and share interests. Buuuuuuuuuut his name is very close to my ex's - they have the same first name and although they're spelled differently, their last names are pronounced the same way!
If we do end up together, how awkward would THAT be? Obviously, I don't have feelings for my ex anymore, but...their names are the same.
How would you deal with a situation like that - should I give this guy a nickname or something?

First name and last name?
Yeah, I see how the same any-kind-of-name could be awkward, so I guess a nickname could get you past the awkward stage. When, or if, the relationship progresses, I think it'll be easier to call him by his real name, just because you'll like him that much more, and his name will mostly remind you of him, not your ex. Ick, sorry about the horrible run-on sentence.
Good luck & have fun! =]
if their name are pronounced the same...then you can at least have sex with your new guy & still think about your ex & screams his name.
hohoho..i'm so silly =3
but yes, that would be very awkward. sounds like fun though :D
Well, if you guys end up together, at least you won't call out the wrong name in bed.
:P
Yeah someone beat me to it, but I don't care.
Hahah, I was gonna make the same joke as two other people. Gahh, they beat me to it. Anyway, I don't really see it as a problem if you're over the ex, unless it'll be a stab in the heart every time you say the new guy's name. This new guy will help create better memories with the name, methinks.
what are the chances.
Wow, that's pretty ridiculous, unless they both have really common names...
And the first thought to cross my mind was also that it's okay, because at least you won't scream the wrong name =)
I never had the same last name thing...but strangely enough for 3 years ALL the guys who were interested in me were named Eric, and I went on a date with one and one became a friend, the rest drop off the face of the earth. Then another guy came into the picture and guess what? Eric again! So when we became exclusive I told him my "Eric story" (around the same time an Erik also showed interest in me and Eric knew about it) and he said, "Uh...call me by my middle name." So that's what I've been referring him as ever since :p
I don't think that's that big of a deal, really. So they have the same name, they're different people.
Thats crazy!!!! Hopefully they're totally different people!!! I never ran into people with the same name but I have dated 2 Ryan's who lived in the same town, went to the same school and the recent Ryan's sister knew the other Ryan....its weird lol oh wait I've dated 2 Michael's to but the first one was only for a month, the Michael I'm with now is better and I've done a few things with some Chris' lol
nickname!!! LOL
wow awkward :P
My current fiance has the same name as my ex. It's spelled differently, but I thought it was weird at first. It's been 3 years now, and the weirdness only lasted about 3 seconds.
Just coincidence. Relax.
Awkward!
But seriously, don't let the name thing get in the way of a relationship. If you think this guy is a keeper, then I say go for it!
And of course there's nothing wrong with nicknames...my fiancé has about 50 different, silly ones for me so it's pretty rare that I even hear my given name at all.
@pillowpixies@xanga - Ditto!
I know a lot of people with the same names of the people that I hate when I was younger. lol. But that didn't stop me from being friends with them or getting to know them.
If you like the dude, go for it! It's not like he looks like your ex, act like your ex, etc. He may remind you of your ex (by his name), but that's all.
I feel like somebody has maturity issues. And it isn't your ex. Sounds to me he got off lucky.
nicknames work :P
I don't think a name really matters if you really connect with this guy, but if you really feel on the safe hand... then sure! Nickname it is and if it sounds good... do the initials nickname o.O only if it sounds good though. If it's something like EF... I wouldn't budge, 'cause I'd imagine a car. :3
What a crazy coincidence! I guess if you really like him the name shouldn't be too big of a deal eventually. Sure, it will remind you of your ex, but if all goes well his name would just remind you of...well, him =P
what's in a name?
jk, I had something like this happen, I get that it's weird! But eventually, it does go away. haha.
Now that's just plain creepy. I never had an experience quite like that. My friend and another gay ex-friend had the same name and the gay ex-friend was stalking my friend to the point it was downright creepy. He never got the hint that my friend wasn't interested in him, and he went to great lengths including getting a boyfriend to try and make my friend jealous so he would want to go out with this guy. Only problem was it didn't work because the ex gay friend was too stuck up his own rear end to realize he wasn't all that.
I'm sure as you get to know him more, a nickname will just flow out. But I don't think you even need to do that. If you spend more time with this guy, the new memories you make with him can overtake the old memories you had with your ex and maybe one day you can hear his name and think of the guy right now.
Marry him and make him take your surname. Problem SOLVED!
@asdfghjkieu@xanga - LOL the shit that you come up with sometimes.
Haha my last boyfriend says I'm the third Sarah he'sdated...consecutively! Sarah 1 cheated on him and Sarah 2 used him to make her ex jealous. And then me...he insists the name is just a coincidence and he doesn't have a Sarah fetish!
lol this reminds me of the TV show "what I like about you". Holly dated and broke up with ... I don't remember his name. She went to visit him at college and her friend Vince decided to go see her to confess his feelings for Holly. He saw Holly's ex kissing a girl and saying "holly" and ... haha never saw the ending.
But I don't think it would prove to be a problem.
I had a situation similar to this one. Except now they're both exes. Nick and Nik. I always have to clarify which one I'm speaking of, and that they're both exes. :)
Good luck with your problem, though.
