There was a segment on the
Today show this morning talking about consequences for teenagers who send racy pictures they've received to hundreds of people. One guy who sent out his underage ex's nude picture to 70 people will be listed as a registered sex offender until he's 43 (he's eighteen now) and another is serving jail time for child pornography after he sent out his ex's pics.
So two questions: one, is there a better term than "sexting"? I can't stand that term. Two, what's an appropriate punishment for sending pictures of your underage ex?

I think an appropriate punishment would be handing out pictures of your own junk, taken on a cold, cold day. To everyone.
i think the ol "eye for an eye" would be appropriate here.
LOL.
Way to go American Judicial system. Way to go
@la_faerie_joyeuse@xanga - Yes that would be embarrassing however I don't think people really wanna see that. XD
If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.
How do you get these guys caught? My ex put pictures of me on 4chan.org, which doesn't matter because I'm over 18. However, he also stole pictures off our family computer of my sister in her underwear and/or bathing suits and posted them on the site as well. She is underage, and I'm still pissed about it. When I confronted him, he looked away, laughed and said, "It was just for fun."
Not funny to me. I want him to get in trouble for exploiting my little sister as a sick way of hurting my feelings.
wow he just sending pictures out - a bit harsh dont you think ? 25 years in jail and known as a sex offender ?
Totally ruined his future
5 years in jail - is enough for a lesson thats just my opinion
I do think they should get into trouble, but I think stuff like that is a little overboard. I mean, really, child pornography charges for sending nude pictures of YOURSELF to other kids? That happened to a 15 year old girl who done that. Whereas I think it was a dumb move for her to do that, I can't say that what she done and the other are anything alike.
I think they need to come up with a whole other set of laws for these specific cases that are more appropriate. They already admit that they need to make new laws do to so much more technology, why not start that right now?
i guess the girl some what had it going for herself since she let him take those pictures.
if today i broke up with my bf on bad terms and he did that to me i really have to say its ALL MY FAULT! because i let him take those pictures!
I think they deserve what they got. What they did was petty & damaging as these things live on the internet forever. While it's true the girls shouldnt have taken those pics, they dont deserve to be humiliate because their ex feels slighted or whatever happened.
The worst punishment is having to explain why they're a sex offender for the next 25 years or why they went to jail. It's over something SO damn stupid too. Trying to play a joke on someone & it got thrown back at them.
@pillowpixies@xanga - I agree. Up until a few years ago, schools & the government wouldnt do anything about cyber bullying until people started dying or going crazy. Like when camera phones came out, it launched a whole new wave of perverted practices. Japan is one of, if not the, only country I heard of that has phones that make a special noise so you know a picture is taken to prevent upskirting. My phone makes a loud click noise too but I dont think every phone does. They need to. People take videos on there too & next thing you know, it's on youtube.
underage?...idiots like him make Americans look bad.
I don't think these kids realized when they took pictures or sent nude pics to all their friends what trouble they would be in. I'm sure there are a million teens doing the same thing and these kids are some of the unfortunate few who got caught at it. I agree that the penalties are crazy but then again the laws are made up and enforced by people who are not equipped to fully understand technology or the situations.
The punisment definitly doesn't fit the crime here. Yes he should getg in trouble, but not to this situation. Espically since she took the pictures herself. It's not like he forced her. The justice system just doesn't work when it comes to things like this.
@Bluekiller2025@xanga - always been a fan of vigilante justice... o_O
@figachewy@xanga - @Supplementary@xanga - agreed.
@Bluekiller2025@xanga - Really? This is a severe violation of privacy; granted, I don't think young women [or young men!] should allow these kinds of pictures to be taken in the first place (if you're gonna pose for a picture, you had better be alright with it if someone other than the intended viewer sees it) especially if they are underage (and ignorant), but that's beside the point.
They trusted someone and that person threw it completely away to be vengeful and mean.
Also, the way one person (apathetic public) thinks about "sexting" is not going to be the same way someone else (law enforcement) thinks about it.
Those guys deserved everything they got.
Be aware of the ramifications of a deed before you commit it.
Death is appropriate.
No, just kidding. If your ex is underage it is child pornography, so I think the punishment is fitting.
the problem is all these little kids taking nude pictures of each other. what the fuck. of course when you're immature and young, and you break up, you do stupid shit like that. what the fuck, for real.
well there are so many on the web really and there is nothing done to those??!!
There was a girl in my school, and she made a video of her, masturbating, and she sent it to a boy she'd hooked up with. it went around school, and it became a school issue because wherever she walked, girls wanted to fight her because their boyfriend's had her video, and people clapped as she walked by. everyone, and I mean everyone, in our school, had that video. She smiled when people clapped. The security guards caught on. She transfered and nothing happened to the guy who sent it out. She's now back to our school.
I don't think jail time is appropriate for this, because it isn't a REALLY serious offense, and 5 years for a kid can ruin his entire life. Don't get me wrong, I would be devestated if that happened to me. However perhaps probation, community service, and some seminars about the effects of child pornography would be sufficient.
In my opinion, it's absurd that people obsess over their classmate's nude photos.
At least that jail time and 25 years registered as a sex offender will keep some people from doing things like that.
they got what they deserved. There are better, more legal ways to get back at someone and sending out those pictures was vindictive and just plain old wrong.
Wow.
What can I say? There are better ways to handle certain situations than blackmailing someone.
To be honest, he really does deserve that punishment. If you were given pictures like that you gotta have more respect for that person's dignity than that. Even if that girl was a horrible ex, I personally wouldn't feel justify in sending those pictures out for all to see.
Maybe people shouldn't be sending naked pictures of themselves to people. Especially that young - pfft, rarely are high-schooler's together "forever."
I'm not saying the kid didn't do anything wrong - he was dumb and sent out the picture - he probably wanted to show off. But the person who pressed send? Just as dumb.
And while I'm not totally against sending pictures of yourself, I really just think there's too much risk involved in sending it - it could hurt college choices, careers, families, etc etc. I really think years of trust need to be built up before you send a naked picture of yourself to someone.
And if you really want to play that game? Maybe modify it? Send "racy" but not naked pictures? I'm not really sure of a clear solution for this issue.
I don't say "sexting". I say "texting naked photos." because I also hate the term "sexting." But it's catchy, so they use it.
I am completely torn. I feel bad for the girl her, but at the same time, if she was dumb enough to send it to some random guy... I think you see where I'm going with this.
To answer your second question... If the picture is of a 17 year old girl, I think they should get in just as much trouble as they would if she was 13. Underage is underage, and laws are laws.
