  • Musical Mondays: My Favorite Depressing Love Song

New fun thing! Each week, let's have people pick out songs that mean a lot to them in terms of their relationships (or lack thereof) and talk about it. I'll start.

This is the way that we love, like it's forever/then live the rest of our life, but not together

I picked Mika's Happy Ending because it's this awesome amalgamation of hopefulness, sheer depression and what sounds like a showstopping Broadway chorus in the background.

This is going to sound more than slightly pathetic, but the week before I came to New York, I remember driving on the freeway, repeating this song, like, ten times in a row and being ready to veer off the road to avoid whatever was coming in the future. I had been with my best friends throughout college and I realized that I only had a few days left with them before everything would change and I'd leave for a different state. And while it was melodramatic at the time, it became truer - I love them both and always will, but a year and a half after moving, I can feel us going our own ways and becoming our own people. Depressing.

And, for the record, my favorite part starts at 2:40 when the "littlebitoflove"s come in.

What's your favorite depressing love song? If you want to pick out a song to share with the rest of the class (ha), submit it to us with a YouTube link and your reason for choosing it.
