  • Follow-Up: JuicyCampus Is No More

We featured a post a while ago about JuicyCampus and a bunch of you weren't thrilled with the idea of the site - I can't say I blame you!

The site that's taken over (and redirects you from juicycampus.com) is called College ACB. Here's part of their press release:

[The site's] mission statement reads: “The College ACB or College Anonymous Confession Board seeks to give students a place to vent, rant, and talk to college peers in an environment free from social constraints and about subjects that might otherwise be taboo."

Such a philosophy sets the ACB apart from Juicy Campus, a website that fostered superficial interactions, often derogatory and needlessly crude. By contrast, the ACB consistently hosts a higher level of discourse—while still making room for the occasional gossip post.

Other differences between the ACB and the now-defunct Juicy prove more than superficial. The ACB employs an innovative user-moderation button, which allows for easy yet unobtrusive regulation. Any post that might be threatening, libelous, or otherwise illegal, is immediately brought to the webmaster’s attention.

Hmm. I checked out the site recently and although the name has changed, the content on my alma mater's board is still the same - so and so is a slut, my sorority is the awesomest*~, etc.

What are some of the highlights, if you want to call them that, from your school's page? Do you think that sites like JuicyCampus should be shut down or banned?

I only went on that site once, when everyone told me I just had to see what everyone was saying about the "school slut" that lived in our dorm. I thought it was a ridiculous site, I felt bad for the people mentioned (some of them with first and last names) even if it was true, and I never went back on it. All of the gossip eventually got to the girl who left our university half way through first semester. Needless to say I wont miss the old "Juicy Campus" and I wont be going on the new one.

I have to say it's pretty interesting, seeing people point out girls that are sluts, or which guys are hot. I can see their profiles since I'm in the network, but it must be devastating to find out people were talking trash about you in such a public forum.

I'm not a very big fan of such websites.  It's those kinds of websites that passes judgment onto other people that you have never met or just heard of them from so and so.  It's like you're judging them base on what others have to say about them but not having the opportunity to get to know them yourself.  And if you do believe whatever they have to say about that person, you might just let a great person get by.  For all I know, those people who are bashing on others are probably the insecurities and envious type of people.

personally i thought it was kinda funny, my feelings wouldn't be hurt if i was voted biggest slut. maybe uglyist girl would hurt

That site was trash anyway.  Anybody could ruin anybodys rep.  It was pointless & dumb

  • PetiteNSweet87@xanga

Yea, they should definitely be banned. People's reputations can be ruined like that. Then again, who would any common sense would use Juicy Campus as a reliable source? *source* I had my name on there, I know ppl who's names were on there. It's just a bunch of haters trying to make people feel inferior behind anonymity. AKA LOSERS!

Juicycampus always seemed like a bad idea to me. I never really read it, but my friends kept me up to date on a lot of stuff that went on. Mostly there was racism (I'm in Alabama) and lots of it. I remember someone mentioned that my friend and I were hot, that my fraternity was tight, among other worthless things.

I still don't check it nor care.

I can't in good conscience say it should be banned, but it's definitely a trash website frequented by people of poor character and lacking in moral standards/decency.

Anyone who runs a gossip website geared at 18-23 year olds should know that it's going to primarily be used for one purpose: to talk shit and insult people anonymously. It won't be used for "gossip" or "discussion." It's a tool for people who don't have the balls to hold themselves accountable to tear other people down.

whoa there's a new jc?  that hole in my life can be restored!  ...not.  fortunately, only freshmen do that kind of crap.

  • spectraredz@xanga

There's nothing to report from my campus. But a few guys I work with were having fun surfing that site.
