  • I've Got Spring Fever!

With the viewing of celebrity groundhog Punxsutawney Phil just a few days away, I'm beginning to fear the most contagious illness of all time: SPRING. FEVER.

Every year, I fall victim to this sickness.  If I'm single, I become seriously involved with checking out every man who walks past me on campus; if I'm taken, I become "that girl" who calls her boyfriend every minute to go to a park and swing on a swingset.  I fall head over heels in love every time I smell a flower, and I lust after any man who looks my way.

Well no more, spring fever. I'm tired of falling for you. After a little research, I've learned that spring fever is not just something in the air, and it's definitely not something I can avoid.

Apparently, during the winter months, our bodies naturally produce high levels of melatonin, which basically means that we follow a better sleep-wake pattern due to the changing hours of light during the day.  However, when spring finally arises, our light-sensitive eyes tell our bodies to stop producing so much of this sleepy hormone, bringing a new wakefulness about.

Along with our newfound energy levels, our bodies also produce serotonin, which the Los Angeles Times attributed to our "root of the giddiness, energy boost and enthusiam that characterize Spring Fever".

So while it's somewhat inevitable, this is one fever I don't mind catching.

Do you fall into the trap of spring fever? What are some characteristics of this heart pounding sickness that alert you that spring is finally here?

I've never had spring fever...or at least not that I've noticed. I'd rather do without it.

Spring simply makes people happier, more approachable. Sun definately puts a smile on everyone's face. And after a horrible winter, sun sounds great.

    That explains all this happiness.
I think I got that Spring fever
    But I'm I'm missing summer!

I love Spring! So this is what they call it... :D

There is this family of birds that make a peculiar noise in my neighborhood.  When the noise starts up again every spring, I start feeling this spring fever.  I get ridiculously horny (like the animals, I guess) and love is all around.  I'm interested to see how that pans out this time, since I'm single.

But I live in Alaska.  It's currently pouring snow outside.  Spring won't be at least until the end of April.

Huh, spring is not here for me yet, but I am really antsy for it to get here.  I always feel like there's nothing to do in winter and while there are some things warm weather allows all kinds of fun outdoor things.  That's interesting about the sleeping more thing- I thought it was just me!

In answer to the question, what things make me notice spring is here, my dog sheds a lot (husky), I start getting excited about getting to use the pool and ride my motorcycle, I venture out into nature, and I sleep less.  I think I'm more motivated in general when there's more sunlight, but that, too, has been proven by science.

I have spring fever all year around, although I'm not really down with the fever, I can still do the average things without thinking about wanting a man in my life.

I LOVE spring. Probably too much. Picnics + parks + colors back into the world + window being able to be opened + warm breezes = one happy me!

  • AllMyNamesAreTaken@xanga

Nope, I don't get that at all. Except the wanting to go to the park part. It's refreshing and swinging is damn good exercise..

I suffer from SADs, so I know when Spring is here. I begin to sleep less, I smile more, it's instantaneous. I'm always more giddy because all the snow and blah is gone!!

perhaps.  It's more like Season Fever.  Oh, woe is a hopeless romantic like me.

i have seasonal affective disorder, not horribly but fairly bad so i get spring fever worse than anyone i know!  i absolutely love spring!  it's the best time of the year for me.  the thing that makes me think of spring the most is how it smells outside when the snow first starts melting.  it's so hard to describe but it's the best smell in the world!  i've been wishing for spring ever since the end of december, unfortunately where i live it won't be spring for a good 3 months yet.  i'm not sure exactly how i'm going to wait that long but i'll figure it out!  i love even talking about spring, i love flowers, i love taking pictures in the spring of all the new plants and everything and i love walking outside and finding the first shoots of flowers and buds on trees and everything!  best of all, the warmth and the sunshine   =]  it's been so cold where i live this year and there's been snow on the ground for about 3.5 months already!  so tired of it.  i'm so sorry this is so long haha i get so excited when i talk about spring!

i'm constantly trying to suppress my spring fever. Where I live, I have a wayys to go before nice weather comes around.

But I LOVE when it finally comes around. Being  outdoors without a winter coat on is a beautiful thing.

  • OxoLaBeLLaViTaoxO@xanga

ahhh, I have spring fever just reading about spring fever... I CAN'T WAIT!!!!  :D

  • TheNotoriousGOD@xanga

haha i'm pretty seriously involved with checking out every girl on campus regardless of what season it is...

  • radiating_sunlight@xanga

best post I've read in a long time! fascinating!
and yes, yes, yes, I get the most intense spring fever ever.  I start to get intensely giddy and goofy.  I just dance all over the place (this is no joke) and smile constantly. I laugh really easily and just randomly go on weird adventures... It's like as soon as I wake up and open the blinds and see the sunlight and open the windows and can hear BIRDS and see FLOWERS - I'm in heaven.

@hawt_nerdlet730@xanga -   oh man, I really relate to this post - SAD is horrible.  honestly the hardest thing I've had to deal with in my life. Mine got so bad I actually chose my college specifically in an area that is further south and a lot sunnier because I just wanted it to end. (this was my freshman year in college) and although this new place still has a winter it's SO much more mild and SO MUCH sunnier.  I have still had a few minor issues but it is seriously NOTHING compared to what it was. my quality of life increased like you would not believe by making the choice to live here. and what I noticed (which I am SO EXCITED about) is that even without having the sadness of winter I am still getting the same intensity of excitement for spring that I always have.  I always thought that my over-the-top happiness only happened because I went through that depression every year - but now I can tell that that is definitely not true - and its wonderful.

(sorry - that was a little long..)

I totally get Spring Fever. For me, it's the return of the birds. When I see/hear a robin, finch, or some other non-winter bird, it just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. I also love the flowers popping up again and the beautiful aroma created when they're scent is mixed with that of rain.

Yea, I got Spring Fever BAD! :D
