  • Why Do Girls Love Edward Cullen from Twilight So Much?

The other night, my special lady friend was up all night reading the first book of the Twilight series.  Why?  Apparently all of her girlfriends are in love with Edward Cullen, the vampire from the story that sweeps 17-year old Bella off of her feet.

So Mrs. Macchiato's going with all her girlfriends tonight to catch the premiere of Twilight.  They're all super excited... but I don't really get the whole Edward Cullen phenomenon.

Why does Bella like a vampire so much... and why are women so attracted to him?  Whatever his secret is, it must be pretty amazing stuff, because there are some pretty serious problems with dating a vampire.

Here are the top three concerns I would have if Edward Cullen was dating my daughter:

    1) He's a pedophile.

Edward was born in 1901.  I looked it up, and Twilight was published in 2005.  So Edward is 104 years old.

Does it bother anyone else that a 104 year old guy is dating a 17 year old girl?! I mean, I know he looks 17 forever...but still, come on.  He's over 100!

I'm trying to imagine if my hypothetical daughter came home one day and said, "Hey Dad, I'd like you to meet my boyfriend...you guys have a lot in common; he's 104."  Actually, if he's 104 and she's 17, I'd have the world's easiest case of statutory rape.  I know it's legal to have sex with 16 year olds in some states, but what if the guy is 104?!  I think I could win a jury trial.

I've heard that girls like older guys, but this is ridiculous.

    2) He's a murderer.

Edward has admitted to killing people back when he was first a vampire.  Of course, they were "bad people"... so it's okay.

Umm...no.  I watch Dexter, this show on Showtime about a serial killer who only kills other serial killers.  It's a lot of fun, but I don't think two wrongs make a right.  What if Dexter and Edward are wrong about the people they kill?

Okay, I know Edward can read minds... but still.  I have a pretty filthy mind... if Edward read my mind, I'd be a goner for sure.

If my hypothetical daughter were dating a vampire, the first thing I'd ask the vampire, "Have you ever killed someone to drink their blood?"  If s/he said yes (my hypothetical daughter might be dating a lesbian vampire), I would be out of there.

In any case, let's assume he did kill those evil humans and drink their blood.  Why doesn't he turn himself in and go to prison?  I mean, the guy is immortal... he could do a life sentence standing on his head.

    3) He wants to eat her.

Edward is irresistibly attracted to Bella because of the "sweet smell" of her blood.  He spends much of the book trying to resist his desire to nom nom nom on her. Call me old-fashioned, but I don't believe in eating my girlfriend.

Is nobody else bothered by this?!?

So... in conclusion, Edward Cullen will not be dating my hypothetical daughter anytime soon.

Please, help me out.  I don't understand why girls love Edward Cullen so much (let alone vampires in general).  I think vampires are disgusting — especially pedophilic, murderous ones that want to eat people (oh sorry, the PC term is "drink their blood").

Help me understand: why would anyone want to date a vampire like Edward Cullen?!

Hahaha, it was funny, but I still want Edward Cullen

He may be a vampire and all those things you mentioned, but he's still sweet (doesn't eat her though he did want to), sweeps her off her feet, is very protective of her and he would give his life for her! No man in real life would do that for a woman. Honestly, and if there are, they're counted with the fingers of one hand, and of course, they're already taken.

So, Edward is the PERFECT boyfriend/husband, and what hurts the most... He's not real   but hey, I can strive to have the closest to him as possible

    @two_days_until_forever@xanga -
"Edward is a very romantic, albeit fictional,
character. His love and passion for Bella are very charming. He's also
supposed to be extremely gorgeous (although I must confess I was
disappointed with the mere mortal actor chosen) and intelligent as
    well."

I disagree. I find him abusive, controlling, manipulative and cruel. He 'loves her' but keeps her from her friends. He's so 'passionate' that he bruises her, he's so 'charming' that she ends up hating her own race. Who cares if a man is gorgeous if he doesn't reflect that with his personality or actions.

He stalks her, he proves that he is shallow in that he doesn't like any other girl because he can hear their mind (proving that he is only majorly interested in Bella because he CAN'T. he can't hear her whining or her opinions)

He's intelligent yet he can't correct his biology teacher in that mitosis has 6 phases (4 major phases) and not 5? Oh sorry, that was SMeyer's screw-up.

Edward really has no personality to speak of and while he may be gorgeous a man has to be more than that. Though Bella doesn't really appreciate him for his charm, love, passion or intelligence anyway so it really doesn't matter.

Oh boy, Edward is controlling, over protective, he has suicidal tendancies, all making him borderline abusive, Bella is passive, dependent and lacks personality. She is supposed to be a bit like Elizabeth Bennet and Edward Cullen is supposed to be Mr. Darcy... ahahahaha right... E. Bennet is feisty, independent and very smart and Mr. Darcy would never dare to get her kidnapped or tell her what to do.  (I did read the books by the way) and just like you when he mentioned he killed some bad people, I thought of Dexter :). And we are supposed to just believe these two love each other, why because she smells awesome to him and he is loaded, very handsome and his breath makes her faint. I still remember one part in the book, Bella was in his car, she was protesting something and in order to make her shut up, he kissed her cause it would make her faint, it wasn't a "i love you, everything will be fine" kiss, it was a "stop protesting and do what i want you to do" kiss. What a PR!CK!

Sick of the whole, "OMG... I love Edward” thing!!
First, don't get me wrong, I am in no way jealous of a fictional vampire character.

    However,
I feel like I can't go anywhere anymore without some girl talking on
the phone, or yapping up her friend about how much she loves Edward
Cullen, and how much Edward Cullen has changed their lives. It is
starting to piss me off on many levels. I mean, PLEASE STFU ALREADY!

    The
main reason it pisses me off is because its pretty clear the vast
majority of these girls only claim to be in love with love him because
its suddenly the cool thing to do. The whole gentleman, dark and
complicated, yet charming vampire routine has been done 1000 times
over... Actually, I think Twilight stole the plot from a porn movie I
watched in 9th grade with my friend and just took out all the sex
scenes. The book just so happen to catch on like a boy band or any
other trend. .. In my eyes he is no different than Furbys or Hanson.

    Okay,
so you think its a good book... fine. You like the character...great.
But for suddenly form an unhealthy addiction to a guy which you
probably would laugh at if you saw in real life is ridiculous. Would
you really pretend to be that obsessed over him if Twilight was just
some book you picked up that nobody else had heard of? No, of course
not, your friends would think you were silly and rather insane.

    In
reality Edward Cullen would be the equivilent of a ***** emo panzy who
wears sparkles and is hopped up on pain killers and crystal meth.
Ironically he posseses some of the least desirable traits that women
would have previously listed for a boyfriend. He is clingy, pale, cold
and uncuddleable, overly-controlling, and most of all he can't have
sex. Also, if I were to drive like him with a girl in the car I am
positive I would get nothing but backseat driving barking in my ear to
    slow down.

Now, I am pretty sure that while Cullen may somehow
look good on paper, if it were to come down between this whimsical
fictionaly vampire fairy boi who is leading you on and won't touch you
and..a real man who burps, farts, but can rail you until your eyes cave
in yet is still caring and loving at the same time... it wouldn't even
be a question that you'd choose the later. Sure you might say..."But if
I were with Edward i wouldnt' need sex, hes soooo dreammy."

But I say... I haven't met a virgin girl since my senior year of highschool...everyone gets urges.

    BTW,
I would take Blade if I had to choose something for girls and me myself
and all the guys reading this even you would choose Kate Beckinsale in
Underworld vampire over one like this cullen tool anyday right. The
whole badass vampire gone semi-good but still badass is so much more of
a turn-on than the whole sparkly fairyprincess look at me plot.

    In
conclusion to this entirely too long rant... I basically cannot wait
until this fad blows over and girls in evry country stop acting like
stupid preadolescent fan girls with a boyband crush. (Reply back to me
    if you support my facts)

okkk no offence but i am a 12 year old twilight freak and anyone who knows me will tell you i cant give you any info on twilight.

One hes not a pedophile cos hes frozen at the age of 17 and once more he did not chose this fate carlisle (blonde male eldest) gave it to him to give him life so there.

um muderer?um okay he is a bit of one but he kills the bad guys and he doesnt kill the real pedophiles in port anglies even if there was going to rape bella so he just turned them in .

okay amit he wants to eat her but still he doesnt he protects her ironicly like guardian vampire instead of angel.and he does actually leave her in new moon to save her and let her lead a normal life which oesnt work.

and people like him because its raw danger i mean come on I would totally LOVE to jump off trees and jump acroos lakes and bela describes him as a god

    This post was great.

Vampires are always alluring to us females. Danger, drama, and a guy with lots of experience (in more ways than one!) Who wouldn't be infatuated?!

I love edward cullen because he sparkles and he is smart witty and a pretector also because he is caring and pasionite and  prince carming!!!!!

edward cullen, where do i begin..

i watched the movie two days ago for the first time and you don't even want to know how many times i've watched it over and over again in that two day time span. edward cullen is a vampire indeed, he has an edgy/mysterious side that i don't always like but in his case, oh boy is it a turn on. he is completely gorgeous, and cares for bella sooo much. the things he says and does are purely out of love. if bella knows that she is with a vampire and is not even the slightest bit scared, i think that proves that he genuinely loves her and couldn't hurt her. he is a vampire, he obviously has killed some people, but now he has trained only to drink the blood of animals. if i were bella, i would have made him turn me into a vampire as well, everything about him makes me want to spend the rest of my life with him. edward cullen is the person in my dreams and if he were real, i would give ANYTHING to be isabella swan.

    end of story.

    Hi!

    My name is not important,

I am a 44 year old woman.  I stay very busy all the time.  I have not read a book in over 20 years (from begining to end).  My daughter told me I would really love the Twilight series.  I am on book three, and I have not been able to put them down.  It took me less than 4 days to read the first one.  I can't explain what a woman feels when she reads these books.  I have been married over half my life and this type of relationship is what every woman dreams about.  I told my husband he should read the books so he could be more like Edward.  If more men had a little of Edward in them, There would be more romance and less divorces.

You hit the really light crap here.

What about the fact that "Twilight" is pushing the idea that you should rush into marriage JUST to have sex, because sex before marriage is "wrong" in some way they never define?

Or that you should give up your entire life for your boyfriend? (or girlfriend, because Edward basically devotes himself entirely to Bella, too)

Or that having boyfriends that beat you up, even if it's once and they just lost control, is completely acceptable and in fact romantic, and the scars are something to be proud of? Seriously, this happens twice in the book: once with Sam and that scar he left on his girlfriend, and again when Bella and Edward have sex on their wedding night.

Twilight is misogynistic Mormon porn. It's fine for a laugh, but when people start taking seriously then things are looking grim.
