  • Facebook Etiquette: What Does Poking Actually Mean?

    Miss Double Shot

My BFF Ned is a Facebook newbie (I know, right? where has he been?) and was asking me a bunch of questions about what the different features of the site meant, how to start a group and connect with friends, what the hell a Mini-Feed was, etc.

Then we started talking about poking. In my experience, you poke people who you're romantically interested in...

him: hey, what's a poke on facebook?
     me: hahahah
you should not actively poke people you do not wish to have sex with
him: ew, what does it mean?
me: yeah, you don't just poke people
it's a way to say hello but it's private
him: so, let's say you poke me....does it just say "so-and-so poked you" or do you include a picture of your nooners with it?
me: it says "you have been poked by so-and-so" with a link to my profile and a picture of a finger poking nothing in particular
him: oh, but the subtext is that you want to get in my bizness?
     me: yes

What should I tell Ned? Do you poke whoever you want? your friends? people you want to flirt with? hmm?
