Miss Double ShotMy BFF Ned is a Facebook newbie (I know, right? where has he been?) and was asking me a bunch of questions about what the different features of the site meant, how to start a group and connect with friends, what the hell a Mini-Feed was, etc.
Then we started talking about poking. In my experience, you poke people who you're romantically interested in...
him: hey, what's a poke on facebook? me: hahahah
you should not actively poke people you do not wish to have sex with
him: ew, what does it mean?
me: yeah, you don't just poke people
it's a way to say hello but it's private
him:
so, let's say you poke me....does it just say "so-and-so
poked you" or do you include a picture of your nooners with it?
me:
it says "you have been poked by so-and-so" with a link to my
profile and a picture of a finger poking nothing in particular
him: oh, but the subtext is that you want to get in my bizness?
me: yes
What should I tell Ned? Do you poke whoever you want? your friends? people you want to flirt with? hmm?

ZOMG. I totally don't poke the person I want to be involved with. Yuck. I know I do it just to say that I haven't forgotten that he exists. A weird non verbal way of keeping in touch. I don't know what his intentions are though.
Poking is a way of flirting, and if you haven't talked in a while, it's a way of saying "HEY I'm still here".
But mostly flirting.
Good grief.
Poking is just for fun, something annoying. It's a quick and easy way of saying "hi".
Only lame people draw any kind of sexual connotation out of it.
Poke any one you like. I do. :)
I thought it had a more innocuous meaning... you can't see any profile that is private, but poking allows you to do so by first offering your own profile for the recipient to view
In my facebook-newbie days, I just poked everybody, because it was cool.
*dumb laugh* huh-huh ... I poked you. *razzberries*
For me 'n' my "people," it didn't indicate romantic interest. Just kind of the thing you'd do to an unsuspecting friend sitting next to you at the table ... jab your index finger into their shoulder.
Poke. Whatever.
@haloed@xanga - really? poking is just a competition to me, see who will give in and stop poking first llol. i have never thought of poking as a way to flirt with someone. =p
It's just a sort of friendly thing. I don't think of it as much of anything but that.
And it's silly, really. But I do it anyway.
I dont use Facebook very much, so I dont know much about using the poking feature.
LOL are we REALLY talking about FB on datingish?!?!?!?!
lol, poking is just a way to keep yourself entertained when you're bored.
Hence - poke wars
I never thought poking had anything to do with flirting or wanting to be involved with someone. I just hey this is annoying, but kind of fun, I think I'll use it. When I first got Facebook, I didn't ask anyone about it, I just explored.
@Ju1cyXCouture@xanga - My one friend & I feel that way too. We're in a poking war right now, it is fun. I will not lose!
@Ju1cyXCouture@xanga - I think that's more innocent, maybe for a bit younger of people? I think for most adults now it's connected with flirting. I mean hell, it's easier than having to talk =P
Wow. I forgot poking existed. No one I know does that anymore.
@eyesochinky@xanga - Thaaaat's what I was thinking. o.o
I poke whoever I want.
It's not something I take seriously.
I always considered poking to have no meaning but instead to just be something to do to annoy people from afar.
I don't get poked very often. Ever actually.
And I don't poke people. It was cool at first but now it's like "eh, really?"
Damn someone takes poking seriously huh...it's just for fun!
I usually just poke people if they poke me, first. It's not one of the big features that I remember and notice most of the time.
But it doesn't need to have any connotations that are necessarily bad.
@HeartOfPandora@xanga - LOL and I noticed some "serious" answers O.O
I never thought of it as being sexual.....jeez that couldn't be bad, seeing as I get poked by several guys on there daily (including my 2 younger brothers)....so that could be gross......I always just thought it was a thing you could do to let someone know you're thinking about them......or to have a poking war, which is always fun
i usually just go into a poke fight with everyone...i dont know why...but now...i dont know..fb kinda died for me...
poking on FB is just for fun!
I poke anybody. I have poked friends before. Sometimes I poke David just for fun. It's just a way to say hi without having to leave a comment or send a message when you don't really have anything else to put other than "hi" It lets them know you haven't forgotten about them but you don't have much else to say.
Poke is such a funny word...
poke is all about hte bidness. haha poke poke poke
