Where Your Waist Fits in the Rules of Attraction
My friend was watching a special on what the opposite sex finds attractive, and the results were quite surprising. For women, the number one factor of attractiveness is height. Yes, the taller the guy, the more dashing we find him. For men, the most attractive thing about a woman was her waist to hip ratio. Don't ask -- I don't know, but the next day, my friend started wearing waist-cinching belts.Does this make any sense? I guess I see how height is attractive -- I find that I always go for taller guys, but I always thought that was an inferiority complex because I'm 5'1. What does the waist to hip ratio have to do with attractiveness?
Ready for this...
It's actually a proxy for fertility. Apparently, a waist to hip ratio of about 0.7 means you are a fine bearer of babies. Obviously this is all subconscious, but everytime I wear a waist-cinching belt now, I feel like I may as well be a lark trilling out a mating call! What do you guys think -- is man's attraction to the cinched waist primal or pretty? I feel slightly uncomfortable about its implications...

LOL! Really?? I never knew about that waist to hip ratio loving by guys. Haha~ I guess bigger bottoms do mean more babies. B/c I've heard older Chinese/Korean people telling their sons to marry big bottomed girls because they will bear more children! xD
But that doesn't help me! Since I don't wear waist clenching belts cus my belly would look too big. LOL
I don't mind that it's kinda like "mating call." I mean, isn't that what it really is? The point of attracting guys is to eventually marry one of them. Right? :)
Well...
most guys like females who have a small waist and wide hips with a juicy behind...it's all about being "thick" in your culture. I don't think it has anything to do with bearing children. Most guys aren't looking for a baby momma
i dont think i consciously look at a womans waist. to me, i feel i react to the overall appearance. then i focus on what i think makes her look good. but as the saying goes...you cant judge a book by its cover. but i say it is a good place to start.
why are you on my site?
I knew about the WHR thing. The attraction stuff is fascinating. Mine is .69, except I never wear waist-cinching belts. It's not really a mating call though. But like, innate attraction is something that they/we can't help; it's natural. I have a whole thing on this that I'm gonna end up posting. Eventually.
My best advice....just stay in shape....and.....attraction is not just about the way you look....it's your personality and everything that makes you who you are!!
stupid.....
7th
I've read this somewhere else too...I think its both.
i'm surprised you've never heard of this before. the "good child bearer" hypothesis is the most established theory for why guys like curvy girls, as far as i'm aware, though of course it's still completely speculative. from what i understand though, most guys prefer a nice face to a nice body. i happen to be the opposite--the first thing i check out on a girl is her body...and coincidentally, it's the hips-ass region that i find most appealing (if it's nice). but keep in mind that just because it's #1 on that survey (what's your source btw?) doesn't mean it's the majority rule. in fact i was surprised myself when i read on your post that hips-ass were #1, because the vast majority of my friends don't find that the most important (physical) aspect.
lol, come to think of it, if you want to be REALLY shocked about something, why don't you research the theory behind why guys find lips sexy?
ultimately though, candylashes@xanga is right. personality's the only thing that really matters. being hot is just a plus.
Hmm, that's news to me. I wouldn't put the waist to hip ratio as even close to the #1 thing I find most attractive of a girl
Cuhs the hips& curves are so too damn sexy.
But lips& her eyes... = body language right there.
how she walks, too.
HAHHHAHA, do i sound lesbian? oh well.
but yeahhh...
GUYS HANDS ARE FUCKING HOT !!!!!! lol
Lol, all I can say is YESSS for having an hourglass figure (well, at least I do when I lay off the munchies), and definitely, I've always kinda made it known I have a penchant for tall guys... as the height goes up, so does my increasing attraction and ability to be less picky about conventional face attractiveness, but it's not like like I've only dated tall guys either.
You still have to consider that these studies are generalizations, like those other ones that indicate how people with more symmetry to their faces are found more attractive and women with longer legs are found more attractive, etc... it makes sense in a general way, but then nothing's set in stone and there's a lot to say about personality filling in, as well as individual tastes.
well i agree with you... @miss_thiq@xanga - when i wear outfits that accentuate the fact that my waist is super small i proportion to not only my hips, but my breasts, i get hit on more/ not to say i'm dressed like a whore, but *shrugs* it is what it is. when we were less civilized, it's shown men were attracted to the hourglass lol
who are you-_-
Maybe this is why ridiculously tall men are always attracted to me, and I eventually let the height difference/sex complication slide!
yup.. all the beauty pageant contestants have that ratio
I totally go with the height theory! The taller the better!! :) I have a friend who is 6' 9 and ooohhhhh boy! He is awesome!!
lol it kind of sucks every time i read studies on attraction for men being unconsciously about the waist to hip ratio 'cuz I have no waist. i guess my face is making up for my waist?
Well, obviously. Look back all the way into prehistoric times. Look at all the women figures they carved, they had gigantic hips, fertility goddess. It may have been one of the first things that we worshipped. I suppose it's a survival of the specie kind of thing.
I've read about that waist-to-hip ratio thing. That's pretty interesting.
It doesn't bother me, personally, that guys find larger ratios attractive. I mean, as an artist, straight female though I be, I find it more attractive, too. It just looks better to me, to a point. There's something attractively curvy about it.
There's no way I'm wearing a cinching belt, though... it would make me look like one of those ancient fertility figures. My waist is waspish and my hips wide- if only I had a bust to match.
*checks ratio.
Phew, mine is 0.7 with a bunch of numbers after it. :P I think there's some truth in it... Just like how a tall man can make a woman feel safe and secure (as he is supposed to be the provider, etc etc). Besides that primal tendency, though, I do think the curvy body is a lot more attractive, so combined with the notion you mentioned in your post and the media-hype, I can't blame guys if they like the 0.7 ratio.
It's also a health proxy. Waist to hip ratio is associated with likelihood of getting diabetes. Being fat is not healthy either because it can lead to heart disease. Have a small waist also emphasizes having an hourglass figure which is one of the hallmarks of how people differentiate women from men.
That's pretty amusing.
I`ve heard of this before, and I guess it makes sense on the primal level. And hey, if you ain`t got it, you can fake it with a belt, hahaha. :P
