HIMYM And The Bro Code
As an avid fan of How I Met Your Mother (which everyone should be, btw), the Bro Code is something oft-discussed on the show. I don't consider myself to be a part of the bro culture and I have never even said the word outside of HIMYM discussions, so I was wondering just how true to life the show was when it comes to the Bro Code. Ted, Marshall and specifically Barney uphold the Bro Code on the show and they take it more seriously than the actual law...well, maybe just Barney for the last part.
Some examples of the Bro Code for you HIMYM novices:
- Two bros will not lock eyes during a devil's three-way.
- A bro will always say yes.
- A bro will supply another bro with whatever he needs during a date.
- A bro's mom is off-limits at all times, unless she's a step-mother, she initiates it and is wearing leopard print.
- No sex with a bro's ex.
I know HIMYM is a show, and thus hyperbolic, but there must be some truth to the Bro Code. Are these rules practiced in the real world?
- Two bros will not lock eyes during a devil's three-way.

Xo
hands off exes should be a LAW...
My friends and I have a saying "Bros before hoes" and we follow that code faithfully.
@SupperMick@xanga - I wish more of my fellow "hoes" would follow the chicks before dicks rule. As much as I love other females and hate "girls that hate other girls", i have to admit there is way too much backstabbing that goes on within our own sex. (that link is a pretty good recent example from a datingish post that was just up a while ago)
Need a wingman, you got it.
dude...who would ever EVER want to break those rules.
- lock eyes during devil's 3-some is like...bicuriously gay.
@CrazyMai07@xanga - I totally agree.. I still dont understand why more girls dont follow the chicks before dicks rule... Seriously I dont understand why so many girls let guys break up there LONG friendship when that guy most likely will not be around for very long.
@nrivera91@xanga - I have separate categories for the people in my life - people I say hi to, acquaintances, friends, good friends, best friends, family.
I'll be honest when I say I could care less about "rules" unless they fit the category of good friends or above. Everyone else is fair game in love and war.
What's a devil's three-way? Yea, I'm a noob! >.<
"Bros before hoes" is common amongst the guys. The girls have a similar phrase, "chicks before dicks" or "sisters over misters" :) Following it... is another thing. I agree about the backstabbing going on nowadays. =\ The other thing is that sometimes I've found it depends on the situation. If you're in a serious, committed, long term relationship, sometimes... just *sometimes* the boy/girlfriend will have precedent over friends... but it really depends on the situation & the relationship. I do agree it's ridiculous that girls/guys will ditch friends over a relationship that's probably not going to last. =\
one "bro code" i have is that there is no sex between me and his mother/sister/female cousins/aunts/exes/anyone he is about to hit on. the other thing i do for my boys are just common sense "bros" stuff, like "kicking" it till he's drunk at a bar trying to get over his ex who broke up with him and shit like that.
No sex w/ a bro's ex is pretty common rule, although there are exceptions...
a devil's threeway is MMF. two guys, one girl. clearly, no locking eyes can be premitted. then they might be gay *gasp*
boys are silly
bros before hoes?
no
chicks before dicks
I try to follow a certain bro-code, but I've also slept with my friend's ex, soo.......
@midgetmachine@xanga - Duhh, it's a common fact that guys can turn gay on each other just like that!
@Roadlesstaken@xanga - oh of course! its a very well known fact. I mean, it makes TOTAL sense. :-p
chics b4 dicks rule: don't bring your boy to girls nights or shopping trips ecc!!! your friends DO mind.
I believe a TRUE friend would never date another friend's ex.
I believe it is an act of betrayal of friendship.
I've cut ties with the guy(and his "friends")who was once my friend but wasn't man enough to reject my ex's attention and her advances.
(though in the end it didn't work out, which is the funny part to me lol)
So, yes, I BELIEVE in the Bro Code.(mainly the who Ex is off-limits code)
@CrazyMai07@xanga -  yes that makes a lot of sense. although if someone is considered a friend than i feel the rules still do matter.. but you are right.. acquaintances do not!
@still_standing -  I agree that it might depend on the relationship but also how good of a friend that person is. No matter if you have been dating a guy for 3 years.. a best friend should still always come first no matter what.
No sex with a bro's ex. - AGREE
But what if the guy - decides to break that rule cause BRO* is half way across the country ?
Its an actual book now, really funny I recommend it. Only like 8 bucks.
Yes, there truly is a Bro Code, along with certain Man Rules that some of us must follow. And HIMYM is hilarious, and truly shows off the talents of one NPH.
As ridiculous as HIMYM seems, I think most things about it are actually pretty true to real life (life and love can be kinda ridiculous at times after all). The basic principals and scenarios are classic and can apply to most people, it's more the outrageous sitcom details and presentation that make this stuff seem a little out there. For example, that whole "have you met Ted?" game totally works! And that episode where Ted dates the talker and they shatter his delusions, and then they continue to shatter each other's delusions of each other... That's also a very applicable real life problem.
I sure do love that show...even if NPH is a bit of a douche.
