  • Sweetest Day Is October 18

    Miss Double Shot

To be honest, I had never even heard of Sweetest Day until recently - I'd always assumed it was another made up Hallmark holiday meant to sell more cards, teddy bears and chocolate.

Turns out the day was founded in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1920s by a candy company worker named Herbert Birch Kingston. "Kingston sought to bring cheer and some happiness to the lives of those who were often forgotten," the day's official site says. "With the help of his friends, he began distributing candy and small gifts to children living in orphanages, those stricken with illness or disabilities, shut-ins, and others who were forgotten."

"It's an occasion to make someone happy, a chance to celebrate and give gifts to relatives, friends, and associates."

Aww, so it (theoretically) even has a philanthropic side to it! If you do feel so inclined, though, Hallmark has 147 cards available for the occasion.

If you were to make up your own "Hallmark holiday," what would it be called? How would you celebrate?
