Nick & Norah and Thrown Together Relationships

Mr. GiraffeOn Friday, I was lucky enough to witness one of the best love stories of my generation: Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. Nick and Norah are like the niece and nephew to the Judd Apatow films, effortlessly blending romance with raunchiness. Don't worry, though, Infinite Playlist is rated PG-13 so it's not as extreme as Knocked Up or that movie where the only joke was that a forty-year-old was a virgin.
One of the many reasons why I absolutely loved the film is that it takes love seriously. That Nick and Norah are destined to be together is established by their friends upon their first meeting. Their courtship is done in a roundabout way. That is, they're not on a date; they're just thrown together but that brings them together--if that makes any sense.
I implore all you Datingish readers to run to the closest picture hall and see Infinite Playlist ASAP. It is a glorious film with a unique look at NYC in the nighttime. And the cast is spot-on and hilarious, especially Kat Dennings the rock star. Michael Cera needs to stop being typecast.
As wonderful as this movie is, it makes me wonder: is this kind of love actually possible in real life? Have you experienced it?
Also, if you've seen the movie, what did you think?

i liked it too. the book is far better than the movie though. i can't wait to see The Secret Life of Bees because it is also one of my favorite books and me being much of a tomboy likes some girlie things every now and then.Â
dude. I've always wanted to fall in love like that.
Like just being randomly thrown in together with someone. a chance encounter.
that sort of thing :)
I thought it was mediocre. It was all right, nothing amazing. I'm just getting a little tired of seeing Michael Cera as the awkward teenage boy over and over again. It's getting a little old. Although I will forever love Superbad, hah.
Were they supposed to be hs seniors? And Nick was from Hoboken? I just felt like it was a little unrealistic, cuz I'm from that area and I don't know any HS seniors who chill at clubs in the city. It just doesn't happen.
Also, the orgasm thing.
Seriously?
the best part was the bit about the beatles. for sure, turned me from 'gosh, i hate predictable girly movies' to gushing 'awwww'
lost points with the orgasm bit. awkward.
I believe in fate and soul mates. I thunk love like that is possible.
Xo
I think it's possible. A few of our mutual friends called the relationship before we even realized it. One of them claimed to have that "feeling" at least a year before we even dtr [defined the relationship].
That sounds like a sweet movie. I'd see it if I had the time & money. xP
I thought the movie was cheesy and cliche. How many times are we going to to the same movie just with different character names?
I didn't see it as terribly realistic, but then again, it is entertainment, so maybe it isn't supposed to be.
I'm always thinking: Where are their parents?
The gay guys were HAWT.
That gum thing was NOT (I mean, with the toilet..honestly? and the orgasm part was definitely totally awkward. & not in the funny/awesome way.
SexDrive was way better ;)
I think I would wait for the movie to be released on dvd. It could be possible for people to meet that way, but no way to say if the relationship could keep going on. It would be a totally random and cool story to tell the kids and grandkids if it worked out though, lol.
i'm from nyc, this movie was awesome. For many of us this was just a typical night of hanging out with your close friends going to restaurants and bars. Love it.
btw, it's also a great teen romance movie. If you can't relate to this movie, i feel sad for you.
i loved this movie. i wanted in so many ways for it to be my life... i want to have sex in a studio, i want to stay out until 5 am with my SO, i want to go to concerts and stuff! ah well, we have our own fun. but sometimes i wish there was more we could do.
I do believe these types of relationships exist. Although I've never experienced it I think that if two people are thrown together and endure the experiences life throws at them they're bound to form a bond whether it's romantic or not. Certain situations often lead to romance when you least expect it.
I encourage you to read the book as it's var better than the movie (even though Cera is hot!)
dating by chance...where can i get that kinda luck???
I really enjoyed the movie!
shorter than most but it was definitely different than the typical "romance" movies ^^
I loved it. I also loved Juno, so yeah. My 2 favourite movies!
Micheal Cera may be overused for his awkward teenager character, but that's because he's gotten it down to a science.
Any type of love, no matter the situation, is possible. It's the nurturing of that love so it continues that is the obstacle.
I think it's possible.
And I've been dying to see that movie. You just made me want to see it more if that's even possible. haha.
Ah, I've been meaning to read that book for over a year now.
I really want to do that first.
I'm excited, though!
How lame is that?! :P
The incessant advertising on xanga really made me not want to see it. Maybe it's a good movie, maybe not, but I don't think I'll be seeing it. When I get bombarded with advertisements, it usually turns me away from the product. Doesn't seem like my type of movie anyway.
@BroadwayBound93@xanga - I was the same way. As soon as I found out about the movie and then learned it was a book, I put it on hold at my library.{And the book was amazing!}
But now that I've read the book, I'm afraid to watch the movie because I mean it does look pretty good but just not consistent with the book.
Ha, I must see it. I agree, Cera is typcast too much. Oh, George Michael Bluth...
I loved it!
hahahaha... haven't seen it yet, but i like the idea of it. i like the guy that i like right now because of a random thrown-together situation... long story, but it's hella funny.
I'm clearly in the minority here. I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade but I found the movie to be a tad unrealistic for my taste. Don't get me wrong, I love chick flicks just as much as the next girl, but it seemed a little odd to me that two complete strangers, who don't even like each other much at first, are somehow able to fall in love in the span of one evening and end up having sex.
I know things like that happen in real life, but think about it...they only knew each other for a few hours. I guess it's possible that they could end up seriously in love and end up having a future together, and there is only so much you can include in a 2-hour film. But more often than not, rushing a relationship like they did is often a setup for heartbreak. Just my opinion, sorry to be a spoil-sport here. Perhaps my opinion is fueled by my recent breakup
I absolutely Loved it! Of course it helps that the main characters were played by some pretty amazing actors. The thing with the orgasm on tape? It was a bit awkward but then sweet at the same time....
Anyways I wish I could be so lucky. Excellent movie Strongly suggest people go see it!
