Follow-Up: Guy Movies That Girls Won't Mind

Mr. Giraffe
Mr. Lion wrote a post about "guy movies" girls might like as well. I'm not a fan of labeling movies as strictly for guys or for girls, but I am also the exception to the rule (I like romantic-comedies but I wouldn't run to see the next actioner). So here is a list of movies that I think appeals to both sexes. The order is not significant.1. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003; Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey). This movie is a major Battle of the Sexes. I think this some guys can like this movie because it plays on every guy's worst fear when it comes to women. Plus, it stars Kate Hudson who is a rock star.
2. When Harry Met Sally (1989; Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan). Some call this one of the best rom-coms ever and I agree. This one takes a good look at friendship between men and women, a topic to which everyone can relate. And, of course, it's hilarious. "I'll have what she's having," Meg Ryan singing "Surrey with a Fringe on Top."
3. Bridget Jones's Diary (2001; Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant). I know what you're thinking, this is the ultimate chick flick but it's actually quite funny and a good insight into one of the most realistic women in pop culture.
4. What Women Want (2000; Mel Gibson, Helen Hunt). This movie is a guy's perspective on women and love. Mel Gibson is super cool even when he's a jerkalicious.
5. You've Got Mail (1998; Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks). This is just a classic. So funny and also equally from the guy's perspective as the woman's.
Some others: Down with Love; Intolerable Cruelty; Leatherheads; Failure to Launch; Music & Lyrics; Love Actually; Must Love Dogs; Just Friends; A Lot Like Love; Fever Pitch
For the guys: what are some chick flicks that you enjoyed? There have to be some...
For the girls: to what movie did you have to drag your boyfriend? Did he enjoy it?

Hahha I made my boyfriend watch Bridget Jones's Diary, and five minutes into it he asks, "Is this almost done?"
...but he watched the entire thing regardless. :)
I've actually watched "How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days" and "When Harry Met Sally." It's funny because my name is Ben and after I saw the first one, my girlfriend at the time called me Benny Boo Bo Bear or whatever the hell she called Matthew. I enjoyed When Harry Met Sally because now I understand so many references from the movie in other sitcoms.
Also, I was forced to watch "Chicago" and let me start off that I'm not a fan of musicals (I did enjoy Grease however). However, I sat through it for her and I kept bugging her if it was over yet. Other than that, I watch guy movies.
well if it's for guys, it's not chick flics, it's dude flics. 300 baby!!!!
My boyfriend pretty much begged me to go see Enchanted with him & we both enjoyed it. :) My boyfriend also watched the Notebook with me & enjoyed that as well. He thought A Walk to Remember was a bit too cheesy but he did like how thoughtful Shane was.
I really do enjoy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days & both Meg Ryan movies. When Harry Met Sally is definitely a classic! That's gonna be the next movie I make my boyfriend watch! :)
@wewong@xanga - I wanted to watch 300 but my boyfriend deemed it too gory for me! He was right too. I had to cover my eyes for the entire 5 minutes I watched it. /)_(\
well i also happen to like rom-com.. couple that come to mind that i like. 50 first dates. lake house (though not really a rom-com). she said/he said.
I liked High Fidelity with John Cusack. Its a rom-com about a break up and seeing it from the guy's POV. I made him watch it but I'm not sure if he enjoyed it much.
oh~ good picks.. :O) i saw your # 1-5 movies & i like all of them.. didn't see any of the other ones u listed.. don't know any of them except love actually and i definitely want to see that one..
sooo many of my guy friends love 'love actually' they actually got angry that i'd never seen it.
so i watched it. with four other guys :)
and i love alll those movies. good choices.
<3
Only movie I have seen on this whole list is What Women Want. That movie was rather funny, the rest on this list I haven't seen or probably wouldn't want to see...LOL
I rented Secretary and The Girl Next Door (uncut version) that my boyfriend complained about....a lot.
But afterwards he admitted it was good choices :P
@wewong@xanga - The 300 is the best thing to happen to men and women everywhere who love drooling over almost-naked hard male bodies. I don't think it can properly be marketed as a "dude" film for that reason. :)
I absolutely hate "How to lose a guy in 10 days", but "You've got mail" is a very sweet film. I like how they don't pretend that being a good person will get anyone ahead in the financial world, but it has everything to do with finding love.
He won't admit to it but I know he enjoyed the Bridget Jones' movies
My boyfriend, at the time, later my husband, was a bit hesitant when I asked him to see "Thelma and Louise," but he loved it! To top it off, he was a tractor-trailer driver, lol.
I think "Hitch" is the all-time best guy AND girl movie.
@Andrea_TheNerd@xanga - damn, never thought of that before, but when i watched it with my guy friends, we loved it because of the heroic(sp?) side of the movie...well, and that naked chicks.
Juno <3 I thought he liked it enough :)
I really would like to meet a girl who is interested in watching "you've got mail" I don't see how it would appeal to Martian let alone ANYONE lives on this planet.
On a side note, I still give my female friend a hard time about making me watch the movie "what women want" with her. It was TRULY a crappy movie.
love actually is a great movie. i watched it with friends, and the guy friends i watched with instigated so bad. omg, it was funny. it's a really nice movie, either was a S.O. or just friends.
Mamma Mia. It was a great musical too. :)
I'm not too bothered by chick flicks. Just keep me the hell away from Disney.
I took my fiance to see 27 Dresses and he liked it.
Lawlz, I am also an exception to the rule... in quite the opposite way.
Of all the movies listed there, I'd say I don't recognize a third of them. The ones I DO recognize and have seen parts of, I can't stand. But then, romantic comedies generally get on my nerves anyhow.
I think that most movies aren't gender-specific, but there are the genres that lend themselves to it... Such as romances are generally enjoyed by females, especially ones consisting mostly of dialogue; and 'action' movies, as they have no better title, lend themselves to males who are stereotypically destructive, and consist mostly of fire and explosions.
Myself, I like Die Hard. xD
However, there are always exceptions to any rule. The only romances I would try to drag any male to see, as they're the only ones I would willingly see, would be a classic version of Cyrano deBergerac, or the musical My Fair Lady. The plot of Cyrano deBergerac is quite intricate but not necessarily complicated, and ends tragically, for the win. That at least is better than most romances. My Fair Lady is wonderful, as the characters don't actually ever admit at any point in the movie that they're in love. In fact, the two lovers both have a song devoted to how mad and angry and hateful they are of the other one... And this is near the end. xD
But the best movies have elements of both... And elements both parties are interested in. Such as, one of my favorite movies of recent times is most certainly The Dark Knight, for cinematography, for acting, (except for Christian bale... I think he has throat cancer, and apparantly so does the Joker, according to Youtube), for...amazingness. But also, I do have a deep fonness for comic books. My ideal partner would see something like that with me, with the action, the plot, and the enjoyment of how the movie seriously looks as if it were a comic book brought to life, unlike the Spiderman movies, which are just epic fail. Yes, they made lots of money. Cashwhores is what I think of them. xD
((Sorry for uber long rant. ^^; ))
Take 'lose a guy in 10 days' off that list and we're in business.
Jerry Mcguire! hands down. Seriously my bf really enjoyed Jerry Mcguire made me chuckle. He had never seen it before and when tom cruises character said.. " you complete me" he responded with.. " Whats that from" i laughed hysterically and said this movie silly haha.
