Miss Penguin Ah, the age old debate about whether or not guys should have to put the
seat down… I'm just going to get straight to the point on this one (a
rarity, I know).
Here's my thing, guys: if you are a guest in a girl's
apartment/house, you put the seat down. In your own house, who cares?
But if you are a
guest in a
girl's
house, it is just polite. I am also of the camp that the natural
position for a toilet seat is down (it is meant to be sat on…) so if
you're a man living with a woman and you share a bathroom, you should
put the seat down after you use it. Plus, I just don't want to touch it
and it wouldn't be up if it weren't for you. But that, I suppose, is up
for debate.
My main point is, it's really rude to go into a
girl's home and leave the toilet seat up. Hell, sometimes if I'm at an
apartment where all guys live and the toilet seat is up when I enter
the bathroom, I will put it back up when I'm done because I don’t want
to disturb the natural order of their apartment. It's just the polite
thing to do as a guest - I thought everyone knew it!
Do you keep the seat up or down?

naturally, i keep it down. so does my fiance, because he's a thoughtful guy (and he probably doesn't want to hear me nag, haha). he also knows that i go to the bathroom a lot in the middle of the night, many times without the light on, and could fall in. what a keeper!
I keep the whole thing down, seat and lid. So, if you come into my bathroom and find it that way, please leave it the same way, loL. i think it's just a mutual respect. if you have to lift, so should i. so, let's have the same job of lifting and putting down, regardless of who's house we're in. let's both be considerate! :)
Random..but in Basic Military Training (Air Force at least)... Males and females both have to leave the seat up..I'm sure the females had a harder time than the males to "remember" =]
I stay with my boyfriend for the weekend every weekend. He and his brother ALWAYS put the seat down no matter what. Whenever I was around, it was almost as if they never put it up.
@reawaken29@xanga - Why is that? Just because there didn't used to be girls in the military?
@hopelessromantic - It's because the military wants you to start you off with basic rule following. If you can't follow the rule - toilet seats must be up when not in use - you won't be able to follow the rules to be able to work on a $10million fighter jet. Horrible example.. But basically, they want everyone to be uniform and work from the bottom up. They even control how you lace your shoes 0_o.
Seat and lid down as long as no one is using it. There are days we leave the lid up(seat still down)so the cat wont be sleeping on it when I come to use the restroom.
I do think you should leave it the way you found it at other people's homes. It honestly weirds me out when a guy uses my restroom and leaves the seat up.
Doesn't matter where I am, I always put it down, automatically.
The lid is always down. The guys in my family have been trained to leave it down. At my house, I also put the lid down because I'm always afraid that something might fall in there.
never really think about it. i ALWAYS put it down if i'm a guest. at my own house i dont really care.
I spend 3-4 nights each week at my boyfriend's apartment, even though I live at school.
But he keeps the seat down for me. <3
If a guy is trained well, he'll put the toilet seat back down after using it. :)
seat down caz I like to leave the lid down as well. It just seems much more sanitary and clean. I mean... would you want toilet water condensation all over the bathroom?
toilet seat is always down :)
the funny thing about this is that i was having a conversation with a friend about this and she said to me, "i make my husband sit DOWN to pee!" my first thought was, "wow, he's whipped!" my second thought was, wow, never even occured to me that men can pee sitting down. if men can pee sitting down, why do they all stand up??? the world is such a mystery.
down, as long as there's a woman living under the same roof as me, it's gonna be down. i just don't want an argue to surface for something as stupid as the position of the toilet seat.
i HATE going to the bathroom in the dark in the middle of the night.. and almost falling to the toilet. lol. so i like it being down in such cases as these.
Please leave the seat down! The past 2 years, whenever I went to visit my boyfriend at his apartment [college campus dorm], his roommate always had the seat up & there was just dried urine around the bowl, dripping down the bowl, around the floor & some crap I just would prefer NOT to have seen~ >.< Gross.
Same thing at my house, the seat used to be left up by my dad when I was younger & my sister & I would often fall in when we went in the middle of the night. :( Yuck~ Since then, my dad's learned to keep it down. My brothers on the other hand.. don't but that's probably 'cause they're young. But believe me, I'm going to train them so they'll be ready for their future girlfriends!
haha, we just keep the seat down at my house... we're not too picky about the lid. :)
but we also live in a house of three girls and one guy (my dad), so it's never a problem... and the only time i've ever seen someone leave the seat up was when it was one of my bachelor uncles or something, haha. even my boyfriend puts the seat down. >_<; and when i go to his house, it's down too.
i've never had a problem with it, though.
I've always been taught to keep the lid down. Whenever I'm done and the seat is up, the lid and seat go back down. Sometimes I'll forget to snag the lid if the seat was already down, but for the most part I try to be pretty good about it.
This stems from the fact that I've almost always used the toilet as a dresser in the morning. Do your stuff, flush, close the lid, place clothes for post-shower dressing. *shrug* maybe I'm just weird like that?
The seat goes down and stays down. LOL
I agree. Guys should keep them down if they go to a female's home. Keeping it up when you live alone or with other guys is different. But guys who live with some females, such as my brother who never keeps them down, should keep them down! Living in a household where 4/6 are females, shouldn't you have the common courtesy to keep the toilet seat down? Plus, guys use it down too, so statistically, the toilet seat is used down the majority of the time. So keep the damn thing down! Hahaha.
my toliet seat is always down. i learned early in life it was just eaiser to pee sitting down. so if there was/is a woman in my life...it is a none issue. if i am a guest at someones house, there is no reason to put the seat up.
At my guy friend's room, like when I go over to his dorm, I put the seat back up when I leave the bathroom, since he's almost more likely to be the next one to use it than I am (although I tend to go to the bathroom twice as often as he does.. hm). Although if a toilet has a lid on it, I'll always put the lid down after I use the bathroom.. I just think it makes the bathroom look better.
If my room had its own bathroom, I would expect him to put the seat back down before he came out of the bathroom. Too bad my dorm room will never have a bathroom. lol
if the guy is trained well, he should automatically put it down . its so gross especially since most men never know how to aim properly.
