Mr. Lion Recently I read an article in a magazine about guy movies that girls
can like, too...but I didn't agree with the choices of those movies.
It's hard
to find a good movie that both the guy and girl can enjoy. It's even
rarer to find a guy who enjoys chick flicks or a girl that likes
strictly "guy" movies, so you're stuck!
I've never had too
many problems with dates going to see a guy movie - sometimes they even
suggest it. But after reading the article, I went through my list of
movies, and found these to be favorites of my exes. I usually
suggest these to my friends on those nights they plan to stay in with
their SOs.
- Armageddon
– Cliché movie about saving the world, sure, but it's a great entertainment
flick with scenes that girls will like and guys will love. What woman
doesn't want a man that is willing to save the world ALL THE WAY FROM
SPACE!?
- Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
– Incorporated into the storyline of Frodo's journey is a great love
story between Arwen (Liv Tyler) and Aragorn (Viggo Mortenson). This
movie finally brings them together after she sacrifices her immortality
to help him save Middle Earth. Girls can relate to that, no?
- Cinderella Man
– Underappreciated movie about a Depression-era boxer and his struggle
to get to the top again while trying to provide for his family. Isn't
taking care of the family up there on the list of things women look for
in a man? Then this is the movie for you.
- Transformers
– This is a perfect date movie. Guy likes girl, girl doesn't notice
guy; guy does something crazy; guy gets girl in the end. Oh yeah, there's a bunch of robots from space that are fighting a battle on
Earth, thrown in there for fun too. Guys will love Megan Fox in this
movie, and girls can appreciate Shia LaBeouf. I think the guys get the
better end on this one. Don't you think so?
Have you taken a date to see any of these movies? What are some other guy movies that a girl can enjoy?

Chick flicks make me gag. Take me to a "guy movie" any day.
I've seen all those movies and loved every single one! Armageddon made me cry, though. Oh well... and I agree with @trebleclef402@xanga... I'll pick a "guy flick" any day! Chick flicks are stupid and unrealistic. Although, I do enjoy a few.
Fuck "guy" and "girl" movies. It all depends on your taste.
I know I've got juvenile taste, but True Lies should be on the list. I think it's one of the funniest movies ever made.
You should put Pirates Of The Caribbean 2 and 3 up there also. ( Yes I have to admit I love them.
) LOTR is awesome too.
I love chick flicks just as much as the next girl, but sometimes I'd just prefer shows like "24" or something along those lines... The only problem with that is it gets addicting and takes FOREVER to finish! haha
@dryvona@xanga - that is a great movie by the way. the dance scene by Jamie Lee Curtis in the hotel room is hilarious
while i wouldn't drag my boyfriend to a chick flick, (or any movie he didn't want to see for that matter) i do enjoy them. sure, they can be unrealistic, and some people say they create high standards and expectations of women... but the kind of people who base what their life should be like on a movie aren't exactly the most stable people in the first place.
anyway, yea, i liked most of those movies. :) out of the entire lotr series, that was my favorite, but i don't know if i'd watch it again. armageddon and transformers were kickass, and i've never seen cindarella man.
just out of curiousity, what movies did the magazine list?
The one that I like from that list is Cinderalla Man. I like comedic and some action movies so I would most likely suggest a movie around those genres. Never a scary movie, I hate them. Although, I do enjoy some chick flicks, not the teary eyed ones like the Notebook.
I'm more into "man" movies anyways. Chick flicks bore me, as they tend to me even more predictable than other movies
My boyfriend & I went to see Iron Man & the Dark Knight because I mentioned they were showing & I knew he'd be interested. Granted, he was more interested in them than I was, I found that I enjoyed them just as much. But my boyfriend & I are are pretty compatible when it comes to movie tastes.. It's never really been a source of conflict. We've also seen Blood Diamond, The Departed, Bad Boys, & others together. I dislike the whole stereotype of girls liking only chick flicks & boys only liking action flicks. While I've listed mostly action flicks above, we've also seen Enchanted [his request], RENT, & the Notebook together. I enjoy watching action flicks as much as he enjoys watching the occasional "chick" flick.
I think people are all mixed up. Girls don't only like "chick flicks". And I don't think there is such a thing as "guy" movies and "girl" movies... just good movies and bad ones, gory movies and clean ones, love stories and war stories. Sometimes one gender will prefer one genre over another, but I challenge you to name one besides "chick flicks"... the tired cliche. Girls like action/adventure/psychological thrillers as much as the next guy. And I know several guys who have cried during the notebook. Break those gender stereotypes!
Plus, I knew this entry was misinformed when the comment about transformers was made (which is one of my favorite movies ever). See, appreciate isn't quite strong enough to encompass my love for Shia LeBoeuf (a love that started in the days of Even Stevens). In fact, it might be the understatement of the year.
I think the whole concept of "guy" movies and "girl" movies is stupid. If it's really a good movie, both sexes can like it without a problem. If you think there aren't that many movies both sexes can enjoy, then I'm sad for you. There are so many good movies out there.
The Rock.
@HuRtHateLoVe15@xanga - That and the part of the big shootout where she drops the gun down the stairs. First time I saw it I laughed so hard I was crying.
@killerbunnyfreak@xanga - I have to agree with killerbunnyfreak. I hate chick flicks. In fact, if there's a chick flick on, my boyfriend is the one asking to watch it (unless of course it's one that looks too full of cliches).
I hated Lord of the Rings - too long, but mostly because the fantasy genre does nothing for me. Funny you mention this though, because my boyfriend and I were watching the Two Towers just this evening.
And Transformers was a pile of steaming crap (no offense to those who liked it)!
I did like Armageddon though.
@xwolfae@xanga - a bunch of movies before my time. it must be some old person writing it. The number one movie was gone with the wind, which is not a guy's movie in my opinion
@HuRtHateLoVe15@xanga - haha, woww yea, are you sure this magazine wasn't for 50+ year olds? :P
i liked the book, but for some reason, i think the movie would be way too long... never seen it myself.
but have you ever read the story? if it was done in a more modern setting, i can see the appeal of it, it's a wartime book, there's an [supposedly] attractive woman... i dunno. but at the same time, i've never heard of a guy that's read gone with the wind.
I only saw one of the above movies, didn't like it, and have no interest in seeing the rest. I know I'm not your atypical girl, but I like action and horror movies! Give me James Bond or The Mummy or Batman any day over some crapy chick-flick! (However, I am going to see Mamma Mia for the third time tomorrow!)
You're right, Cinderella Man was unappreciated. It's a fantastic movie.
I like almost any "guy" movie out there, with the exception of movies with a lot of nudity and language. Although, it doesn't necessarily have to be a "guy" movie for that.
My boyfriend and I watched Cinderella Man together. He loved the movie; I thought it was pretty good.
LOTR really isn't appealing to the "typical" girl, though. I enjoyed the movie, but then, I like most "guy" movies more than my boyfriend... and he likes chick flicks more than I do. Go figure.
Haha personally I wouldn't watch some of those movies. I do think Armaggedon and Transformers would be good. Pick comedy movies or even "Iron Man" ...and she might like it, at least my gf does. And what exactly defines a guy movie cause I don't mind emotional movies as long as it's not ALL about predictive outcomings.
I enjoyed two of those movies and they weren't because of the reasons you mentioned. A girl can watch Transformers and drool more at the sight of two robots duking it out than at the notion of a stereotypical romance plot. The notion of the chick flick and "girl"/"guy"-labeled movies is rapidly becoming antiquated, especially with the crap level of romantic comedies that movie studios are churning out these days. With this, there have actually been a handful recent movies that easily avoid gender-labels, like say, Juno. Don't think too hard about your movie choices. Each girl is different. The Sleepless-in-Seattle fans don't speak for all of us! I used to be an avid chick-flicker until all the crap movies started pouring in and I began to get sick of them. This is turning into a rant on the poor quality of movies these days... because the plot is subpar, studios have to substitute a hot girl/guy or a forced romantic twist to distract us from the silly unsubstantial storyline (summer blockbusters excluded cause those are simply flashy entertainment on purpose, haha).
The best movie IMO that is neither guy or girl is the kind with excellent humor (I really want to see Ghost Town!). Look for those and I theorize you may have less trouble picking the right movie.
Armageddon and Braveheart are my favorite movies!
I've watched Tranformer. and I don't think it's a guy movie even there are a lot of robots and such.
:]
@GaMeGurLsH@xanga - braveheart is a good one. Yet to see that with a girl. hmm thanks
