Coming Soon: Break-Up Season!
This is a guest blog submitted by sleepyhead.Break-up season is coming soon to relationships near you! Based on a study in January's issue of Shape, 56% of relationships end between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day. I didn't believe those stats because, personally, I've been split 50% of the time - I had some that ended between those months and others during the summer months.
I would have thought that more people break up during the summer months. That's when it's easier to attract someone because people tend to be out and about more, right? Plus, winter months should be about getting cozy with a significant other, so why break up?
I would say part of it has to do with spending extreme amounts of time with each other, like in school or on campus - it's easy to get bored or complacent in relationships!
Another reason could be the holiday season. Many spend the holidays with family, not necessarily with their girlfriend or boyfriend, so their SO might not be as important to them as their family. Or maybe people get together during the spring months, just like the blossoming of flowers and mating like other animals. Could our relationships really be that in tuned with nature? Who knows!
Have your break-ups taken place during that seaso n? Do you believe in the idea of break-up season?

I don't really believe in the idea of a breakup season. One relationship I had ended in a May and my previous relationship ended in an August.
Hey, this study applies to me! I've been dating my current boyfriend for about two and a half years now, but my previous relationships ended during the breakup season without fail.
It's weird that there is a breakup season. I think it might have to do with people spending more time with family and maybe reevaluating their relationships... especially if their families don't happen to like their boyfriend or girlfriend.
Three of my four real relationships have ended between that time period.
All of my relationships have avoided every major holiday and birthdays. One guy dumped me the first week of February... convenient. I've never had a boyfriend during Valentine's... sad. Never had the opportunity to bring home the boyfriend for Thanksgiving or Christmas. No birthday gifts to shop for nor received from the significant other. LOL
Hopefully that's not the case this time. Third time's a charm, right? If not, oh well. I'm used to being alone when it's cold... hahaha.
getting together and breaking up with my last ex took place during that season... and part of my frustration was that, for christmas, he wanted me to spend the day with him... but i had only been going out with him for a couple months, and for my entire life, i've spent christmas day with my extended family. i explained to him, but he kept trying to make me feel guilty... so (in addition to other reasons) i called it off.
Hmmm...I've thought it's all been random, but thinking about it...
All but one of my breakups happened between Thanksgiving and Valentine's day...interesting...
my breakups usually are between may through thanksgiving basically the times where school ends and school begins how ironic
My last relationship ended around that time.. interesting data!
it happened twice to me, but we've also started dating during the break up season.
personally, summer was hard because we were away from each other. i kept thinking that it'd get better once we get to see each other all the time again.
from there, two things can happen. it can either get better, or you realize that it's not progressing as well as you want it to.. in which case, you take some time to consider the break up and it will happen within this 'season'.
The idea sounds funny. I suppose that could be fun to have a breakup season lol. Despite the possibility of fun, that is quite meaningless
.
i've had only one break up and it was around december! interesting =]
I've only had one breakup and it was in may so yeh guess I didn't get sucked into that one.
could it be that some people break up during that period because they don't want to spend money on gifts for the SO??? for me 90% of my breakups were outside of that period.
This is news to me. I thought the season coming up is Get Together Season since its the Holidays and all.
I never had a break up season but I know when Oct rolls around... I tend to make sure I have someone ready for the holidays =P
@oOBuBBLes711Oo@xanga - your taking the opposite approach, i like that!
I don't believe in a break-up season. A couple can lose interest in one another at any time of the year.
my relationships all revolve around the school year, so almost always i'm starting a relationship or ending one sometime in september!
(this september though, i'll have been with my boyfriend for one year!)
weird to think about.. but once i did think about it, it was.. quite true! interesting...
Yep, I've had a break-up during that season...odd.
Yeah actually. I'm not sure about my first relationship, but the second one ended before Valentine's day. Lame, I know.
I don't believe in break-up season. I did break up with my last boyfriend in December/January, though (don't ask why it took so long...it was wayyyyy too drawn out)
I never used to believe in it, but for some reason, it seemed to be somewhat true throughout my years in university. We called it "Turkey Dump" because it seemed like around Thanksgiving, a lot of couples that we knew were breaking up around that time.
I believe in break-up season at least for college. I've noticed that people tend to break up on campus around those times, espicially if they still have a SO back at home.
It's always break-up season at my house
Before reading the stats you found, I would have definately thought that break-up season would be in the spring time, because thats when people want their freedom, before starting summer.
