This is a guest blog submitted by sleepyhead. My sister isn't 18 yet, but she needs a way to manage her paychecks and wanted to open a checking account at our local bank.
We went to our nearest Washington Mutual and asked to open an account for her under my name - it was a custodial account, meaning she can manage it herself when she turns 18 but she's got a guardian looking over it in the meantime.
The clerk asked us a few questions and then asked how much my girlfriend wanted to put into the bank - he assumed we were together, as in dating. We both have different last names (she has my mom's and I have my dad's), so maybe that confused him, but it wouldn't have hurt to just ask us instead of assuming.
When we told the clerk that we were siblings, he apologized. Now every time I go in to the bank, the clerk tries to be welcoming and nice . . . he hasn't asked me how my sister is, though.
Ever have someone mistake your sibling for a significant other or vice versa? What was your reaction?

This happens all the time to my brother and I even though I've been married for 14 years and have two sons. People think that my brother and I are together and that my kids are OUR kids. It's pretty gross.
I've had people congratulate me for dating older chicks when they're talking about my sisters -.- who are in early 20's and mid 20's...really disgusting actually lol. I'm just thankful that no one has ever said anything about me and my twin sister...that would just make me gag
No. We look TO much alike. They have mistaken us for twins...
Which oh boy. my older brother does not like.
This happens with my brother and me sometimes...even though he's married and I'm not. Not to mention that we look a lot alike. It also doesn't help that his wife and I favor one another, so people think she's my sister, instead of my sister-in-law! Funny, no one ever assumes she's his sister!
Not sibling, but cousin. We became all but inseparable in sixth grade but people didn't know we were related so they just assumed we were dating. Then they found out we were cousins and they replied, 'Well it's ok, you're second cousins! That's still legal!' Um, ew?
Finally by 7th grade we got so fed up with it we started telling people we were twins...born a month and 19 days apart. The best part? They totally believed us. We made up this elaborate story about my delayed birth and how our parents split up and remarried, hence our different last names and not living together.
Even today, some four years later, people are still confused as to whether we're siblings, cousins, SO's, or just some crazy kids who like to screw with peoples' minds. A few months ago a rumor actually started that I was pregnant with my brother's baby. Good times.
Creepily enough, I'm more likely to get mistaken for my father's wife when we're out together. He's pretty young and I can look older than I am, so people just think he married a younger woman.
My younger sister and I are pretty affectionate when we're together, but I think we look enough alike that people don't mistake us for a lesbian couple.
Ooof. That has to be awkward. I've only been confused for being the brother of one of my friends. Thankfully haven't had the gf problem.
haha that happened to my older brother and me at a gas station... my initial reaction was complete and utter disgust (think incest people) and then just plain humorous. Â
lol Alot of people think my cousins and I are dating. They don't care about age either. They think I'm dating my younger, older, or cousins at my own age level. Happens all the time, and when they find out about us being cousins, we just have an awkward moment. It doesn't really annoy me. My cousins don't get annoyed either. It's people that keep talking about us looking cute together or other things like that, that makes my cousins upset.
It's soo funny to see people's reactions but kinda disturbing at the same time.
Someone once told me my boyfriend (at the time, not my current) looked like he was my older brother.
That was creepy enough. Good thing we split.
just an honest mistake, get over it.
That's never happened to me before. Sounds awwwwkward (each and every single W is necessary to emphasize the meaning).
when my bf used to go to high school with me, he walked me to all my classes and my classmates assumed he was my brother, which was weird because we would hold hands and kiss. .. talk about awkward.
it's happend to me and my younger brother. it's hard not to feel grossed out about it haha.
however... I don't mind when people think my 19 year old brother is the older sibling ;)
I'm a vice versa story - I dated a guy who had the same features as me - blonde hair, blue eyes, about my height and size ... we got mistaken for brother and sister all the time.
People mistake my mom for being my sister. It has happened so many times on occasion. Sometimes, me and my brother introduce her as our sister and they take the bait without hesitation.
It's probably all part of the "All Asians look alike." kind of deal. But whatever, my mom likes the compliments. Hahaha.
Oh yea, also to add, I'm 21, my brother's 23 and my mom's 45.
goodness no. *shudder*
ha
my brothers are a lot younger than me, so no one has assumed I was dating either one of them, but they've both been mistaken for being my children. Especially my youngest brother. He's only 3 and every time we go somewhere I get that "isn't she a little too young to have a 3 year old kid" look.
No, but everyone thinks me and my sister are twins. I am 6 years older than her. Good for me (look younger), bad for her (look older) HAHAHAHA
I have a twin brother and it happens all the time. Stop assuming!!!!! I remember at a college graduation a woman asked when we would get married because our kids would be so cute *screams*
My bro and I love to go to movies together... a typical date situation. We've gotten some funny/curious looks where you know people think you are together. We usually laugh about it. I guess it doesn't help that we whisper to each other throughout the movie (He's a film editor so we critique everything we watch!). I find it pretty amusing.
My sister and I look way too alike (our parents like it that way, not MY doing..), and I once got mistaken for being her mom. I'm 16. She's 10.
..Err?
i was walking down the vegas strip with my older brother and within two hours, we had three people ask if we were dating / newlyweds. its pretty gross to think about it, but i guess it's people's first assumption when they see a guy and a girl together
