  • Guys Wanna Groom, Too . . .

This is a guest blog submitted by sleepyhead.

I never thought a look could bother me so much.

This past Monday I stopped by a Duane Reade to get a few things.  When I went to the counter, the women at the register gave me such an odd look when she was ringing up my items. I didn't say anything and just walked out with my bag.

Looking back, I think the fact I had bought a pumice stone made her wonder what I could be doing with it. I love to wear flip flops and sandals during the summer when it's hot out, but I don't like my feet looking crusty.

She might be thinking using a pumice stone is a feminine thing. But nice feet are like nice teeth - no women wants a guy with either looking trashed. It just bothered me to know that this woman was judging me for using a pumis stone.

Can guys try to look good using products primarily for women and vice versa?

Or maybe you had something stuck in your teeth... I wouldn't find it that weird if a guy was buying a pumice stone. Maybe she just didn't know what a pumice stone was, so she was like "what is this weird thing he's buying?"

If a woman bought a man's product, the cashier might just assume she was buying it for her husband/boyfriend/brother/father etc., but people don't usually associate men with buying it by themselves. I think it's acceptable, or whatever, but still. I'm just trying to point out what a lot of other people would think

To an extent, yeah.  But really, I don't think guys should be shaping their eyebrows or applying mascara or anything of the sort.

Shu Uemura may make an awesome lash curler, and curled lashes look nice, but that doesn't mean I should be curling them.  Women only, please.

And a pumice stone?  Of course.  I don't think any woman likes a man with crusty feet.  Exfoliation is a healthy thing to do anyway.

I'd even go so far as to say that things like moisturizers and things of that sort are fine, because they're functional in keeping "body care" more than "looking pretty".  Clinique makes a For Men line that has great product.  Kiehl's also makes quality product that guys can use.

I guess that is being metrosexual.... youre a pretty boy... not a man

Guys can buy whatever they want to look good, it doesn't matter to me. Now, would I be in a relationship with that guy? No, probably not. I just simply don't want to be involved with a guy that puts more effort into his looks than I do. But, I can't stand that some things are considered "feminine" products and some are "masculine". Tampons make sense. Pumice stones do not. Jock straps make sense. Razors (I prefer men's razors *shrug*) do not.

  • docsfancyskip@xanga

I see nothing wrong with buying yourself a pumice stone, in fact, I"m embrace it! I hate yicky feet! Thank you for taking time for hygeine! *claps*

@Xetronic@xanga - Sexuality and hygiene are two completely different things.  A real man keeps his body clean and healthy.  Take a hint from the_last_kiss and don't judge other men for your insecurities.

@Nikolais_apprentice@xanga - srsly!  omg.. sounds like somebody has a insecurity problem with his manhood or something..

women like gentlemen, not cavemen u know.

i dunno about metro but i like a guy who can take care of his body.. and crackly feet are just gross.

  • cokeaddict@xanga

i doubt the face she made was related to the pumice stone.... cuz it's not exactly a feminine product.  if you were buying tampons though she'd probably have smiled at you... what a sweetheart, out getting such an embarrassing item as a favour to his gf who's probably sick at home.... cuz that's the kind of elaborate thinking that girls do.

she was probably thinking... crap.  he bought the last pumice stone.  i need one.  i have this big hot date tonite and i need to deal with my feet and there's not time to get a pedi... dammit... i'm sure this guy doesn't *need* the pumice stone as much as i do... maybe i should ask him if i can have it instead... or i dunno.. is that weird?... hey... he's got spinach stuck in his teeth....

    anyways... you get the idea.

  • Nikolais_apprentice@xanga

@keiko_xxx_rd@xanga - @cokeaddict@xanga - LOL both of you are hilarious and definitely!

  • alterEGGO@xanga

are you sure you didn't have something on your face?

  • SleepyHead

@alterEGGO@xanga -  you mean besides that small hint of a beard?.. nope nothing else was on or growing out of my face lol

  • alterEGGO@xanga

@SleepyHead - LOL ok. People have been known to have odd things like buggers hanging or spinach in their teeth.

  • ToxicWishes@xanga

*kisses* I LOVE YOU!!!!  ( I can't stand gross feet or hands, no matter which sex you are).

I think that as long as it keeps you looking well kept, go for it if that's your thing. I'm still going to giggle if I hear a man talking about buying a waxing kit or a paraffin spa...

  • XxDead_SithxX@xanga

I think you really shouldn't care about other's opinions. If you like to practice good hygiene, it's your decision. I particularly don't necessarily buy girl products, but I do try to keep myself clean. I don't go to the extreme as far as plucking eyebrows...and other stuff like that I guess. It's not a huge deal. I just don't think it's necessary.

  • XxHells_GatexX@xanga

Dude as long as your clean and comfortable with yourself, don't pay attention to people. I'm sure they have other things to be pointed out about them. It's not a huge deal. Be clean.

  • la_faerie_joyeuse@xanga

Depends on the product.  Pumice stone/hair removal/hair products?  Yes.  Anything smell-good, manicure kits, or makeup?  No.

  • XxNoLifeKing_AlucardxX@xanga

Yea, be yourself. It doesn't matter what other people think. As far as me, I like to be clean. I don't need to be extravagant and add fragances all the time, make up, and anything else. As long as I'm clean, I'm ok with that. Also, the whole fixing your eyebrows thing...I'm not really sure what to say cause when I look at a guy who's fixed his eyebrows, most of the times he looks like he is "permanently" surprised. lol

  • awokenfatality@xanga

Hey man, just be clean. Its good that guys maintain themselves, you're right no girl wants a trashy man. I know plenty of guys who go and get their eyebrows don't at the barbers. Not as nicely shaped as girls, but to clean them up so they don't look like they have hair caterpillars above their eyes.

  • tialoca_talks@xanga

um...why do you care what a total stranger thinks?

  • lorelei@xanga

Guys should 100% be able to groom themselves however they want. And IMO nice feet are a must. It's the guys who DONT use grooming products that wont get a chance with the ladies. Even if they feel the need to use these products in private- whatever works. And I don't think they are especially marketed towards woman. Even at the store I go to all the time they have bath type items separate from the beauty aisle now... as well as a 'grooming' section for men. Which is good. Grooming isn't just for women. Everyone should take care of themselves.

  • n3ssaac@xanga

i use men's deodorant since it's cheap and smells better than women's ... plus it's stronger!

  • akatiegirl

@the_last_kiss - I think most guys don't need to shape their eyebrows...but I've seen some men that really probably should.  I guess it's the caterpillar rule: If you could replace your eyebrows with a fuzzy caterpillar and no one would know the difference, it's probably time to pluck, wax, shave...something.  Please

    Especially unibrows...

But that may just be something with me.  I like to think that I mostly refrain from judging people by their looks...but bushy eyebrows or unibrows...they just kind of creep me out:-/

Besides, if I have to wax my eyebrows, men should have to feel that pain, too.  It's only fair... hehehehe...

I can't imagine pumice stones being specifically meant for either gender. That is ridiculous. Both sexes have feet!
