Miss Double ShotI was out on a first date a few years ago, and although the guy and I were getting along pretty well, we went to a pretty saucy dim sum place and I had no idea what I was ordering. I'm very independent, so I don't like asking others for help and I wanted to make my own decisions at this particular dinner.
I ordered tofu something-or-another - it was still soft and slippery - and I couldn't get a good enough grasp on it to cut it with chopsticks or a fork . . . so I tried to eat the whole thing at once.
Cue choking.
The guy didn't know what to do and I was trying my best to clear my airway while keeping my composure. It didn't go too well . . . talk about a first impression!
Dating lore says that there are certain foods you shouldn't eat on a date - the two that come to mind most are broccoli (which gets caught in your teeth) and spaghetti (which is difficult to eat gracefully and tomato sauce splatters all over the place). I had no idea tofu had a place on that list, too, but needless to say, I haven't picked out that particular dish or gone to a dim sum place again on a date.
What are some foods you absolutely won't order on a date?

Anything chocolate or garlic related...
Durian. Â And, if he orders it, I'm walking out.
Anything which has too much sauce and/or spicy, chunky with the filling falling out, foods which should be eaten with fingers.
@XINERGY@xanga - I hate durian!!!
Anything with garlic or a lot of sauce. I'm prone to spill on myself!!!
sushi if they don't make it right and the seaweed is rubbery x]
Ribs and crab legs come to mind...
hotw wings or ribs! they are much too "saucy", and finger foods are just too much of a hassle.
RIBS! lol.
anything messy/ involves using my hands. i also avoid noodle dishes and salads-- don't want anything hanging out of my mouth.
yeah... ribs, wings, crab legs... and lobster if i have to surgically remove all the edible flesh by hand... won't order those... no matter *how* yummy it looks.
I used to say ribs and burgers, but one time I ordered a burger, and my date was impressed! So I don't allow foods to hold me back on dates now. As long as I can keep it lady like and still eat a burger!
Idk what would be added on that list, but I've had tofu on a date and it wasn't so disasterous.. lol
i order whatever looks good
garlic stuff ... and i usually don't eat ribs anyway. i try to refrain from coffee too.
why be so cautious about food on the first date? just be yourself and order whatever you want to eat. you might never go back to that restaurant ever again, so order what appeals to you. be it ribs or finger food.
i think satisfying my tummy would come first. who cares about a guy who cannot stand some garlic smell or some stain next to your lips? i think it's cute when people enjoy food. i love looking at people when they are happily indulging in food.
Order anything you normally like to eat. If you are a girl who actually likes roasted garlic on her bread, or likes eating crab or ribs or spaghetti -- by all means do so. I'd rather date a girl who is honest with herself and with me as to who she is -- even if she's a sloppy eater.
I'd rather have a sloppy eater who is honest and up-front with me, than a neat eater who feels like she has something to hide.
I don't care if your breath smells like garlic all night, or if you've got a bbq sauce stain on your cheek. I will have mints for you if you wish, and I will wipe your cheek with my napkin if you sauce them accidentally.
Don't pretend to be who you are not. If you are a woman of good character, and understand Love, I will love you regardless of your mess.
@kitschkid@xanga - THIS, exactly. It's funny that our two replies ended up right next to each other saying the same thing. :)
Friends, food is love. Enjoy it together. Heck, nevermind the restaurant -- cook together. That makes a great date.
Lobster. i've splattered the juices all over a dates face once. and my recent attempts to eat lobster have revealed that i am no more skilled at eating it gracefully now compared to back then.
I won't order anything that I don't know (as in it's not a good time to try something new) or anything that has the potential to bother my stomach.
Oh, finger food, I don't want to look like an animal.
I think it depends upon what I'm craving. Obviously I'd stay away from foods I don't like - green beans would top that list. I can't explain why. *shudder* I've hated them as long as I can remember.
The only things I think I may have possibly chosen for limitations in the past are garlic and anything dairy. These, however, would be for allergy reasons. Now that I seem to have outgrown those, anything is game.
I have ordered spaghetti on a date. I have eaten deep-dish pizza with my hands. I have eaten a grilled cheese sandwich with a fork and knife. If my choice of food presents a problem, we have bigger issues.
Nothing that would give me bad breath (oniony things), not Pesto or other dishes where stuff will get stuck in my teeth. Beyond that I don't really think about it too much.
I try to order something similar to what they're having. As in, if the date orders finger food or something messy, I take that as a cue that it's fine for me to do the same, as I'd feel weird if I was digging into a plate of hot wings while they were eating a piece of chicken with veggies.
Personaly i don't care if a girl spilsl somethign on herself. i find it to be cute, because honestly i am so afraid i will do the same. Although i would say i would laugh so hard if a girl orders durian, i have fallen in love. I have never had it but it smells like sweat, but taste goods. So she is someone who looks deeper and is less likely to complain about how bad i smell.
Anything garlic-y
